MATTHEW Flapper (pictured) will represent

Australia and his hometown Bacchus Marsh
when he competes at the Commonwealth
Games next month.
The 34-year-old will compete in the lawn bowls
event and hopes that Australias domination in
an eight-nation international event last August
will lead to a medal.
We competed at Kelvingrove, Glasgow last
August and thats where well be competing
at the Commonwealth Games. The Australian
men won the gold medal overall in the eightnation tournament. Weve got a good taste of
what to expect over there, Mr Flapper said.
Mr Flapper first debuted for Australia in
Malaysia two years ago and has since played
in three trans-Tasman series against New
Zealand, most recently in March in Traralgon
where his team was victorious.
Originally from Creswick, Mr Flapper said
his experience playing lawn bowls in the cold
and wet Ballarat conditions would help him
compete in Glasgow, Scotland.
I started playing when I was 11 because my
dad (Gerry Flapper) played. Hes the person
who got me started and I still look up to him
and get advice from him, he said.
The way you get to be a good bowler is through
practice and over time. Youve got to put the
effort in. Youve also got to have a good tactical
brain and be fit.
He said he was looking forward to the
challenge, competiveness and friendship of
the Commonwealth Games.
Im looking forward to the whole experience,
to be in the vicinity of all those other athletes
from around the world and rub shoulders with
them. This is as high as you can get in lawn
bowls, its not an Olympic sport, he said.
I never thought Id be in this position. All the
hard work, dedication and commitment has
paid off. Without the support of my wife Linda
I wouldnt be in the position Im in now.
Matthew Flapper will depart for Glasgow on
July 11 and compete in the Commonwealth
Games from July 23 to August 3. He will take
time away from his job as bowls co-ordinator
and coach at Ocean Grove Bowling Club.

MYRNIONG
Primary
School students have used
their numeracy and literary skills to design a 13 hole
mini golf course.
The Grade 3 and 4 students
created the portable golf
course and parents and
members of the community helped to build it.

Teacher Cameron Crilly

said it was a grade 3 and 4
literacy and numeracy project completed over term 2.
In numeracy the students
used angles, scale, perimeter and area to design the
golf course. The literacy
component was writing up
the plan, Mr Crilly said.

They started by working

on the scale of the mini golf
holes and then they had to
design obstacles such as
bricks and tunnels. Its a
portable golf course that we
can pack up and take out
whenever we want.
It was really designed to
give kids a hands-on project where they can learn at

BACCHUS Marsh Grammar students

Ali Abdou and Kaitlyn McDermott
have been awarded one of Australias
top prizes for Year 12 students undertaking Vocational Education and
Training in School (VETiS).
Ali and Kaitlyn were among 500 students to receive Australian Vocational
Student prizes which recognised the
skill, commitment and achievements
of students who take on vocational
education in their final year.
Bacchus Marsh principal Andrew

Neal congratulated Ali and Kaitlyn on

being awarded Vocational Education
Student prizes for excellence in their
vocational studies.
These prizes are highly sought after
and are an indication of exceptional
performance in vocational studies.
The school has an outstanding record
of achieving success in these awards
and all staff involved in the vocational
program, particularly Ms Belinda
Lipscombe, is to be congratulated on
helping our students achieve such a

high level of success, Mr Neal said.

Patron Senator for Ballarat Michael
Ronaldson said: These students are
not just ambassadors for their school
but for the first-class career opportunities that high-quality VETiS can
provide.
The future prosperity of our economy very much depends on a highlyskilled workforce with this generation given an opportunity to pursue a
trade or training while at school and
deciding on a future career.

Council has identified its

top seven priority projects
in a document released to
coincide with the upcoming state election.
The projects included the
Halletts Way bypass and
an eastern freight bypass in
Bacchus Marsh, a Moorabool indoor aquatic centre,
a Darley early years hub,
sewerage for small towns,
a Parwan employment
zone and more recreation

reserves across Moorabool

Shire.
Moorabool Shire mayor
Paul Tatchell said the
document was an important information and
advocacy tool for council
to lobby state and federal
governments.
This document puts our
growth challenges in sharp
focus and provides a context to quickly explain our
communitys needs and

expectations, Cr Tatchell
said.
Very importantly, a way
forward to provide a connection for Halletts Way
has been mapped out in a
staged manner in coming
years.
Councils position on issues including windfarms
and coal mining and community concerns regarding
agriculture, and the Moorabool River, were detailed in

the document.
Moorabool is popular as
a place to live, work and invest, so we need to make the
state and federal governments aware of our needs
and build strong partnerships to ensure these projects can be delivered, Cr
Tatchell said.
The document can be

Keely Fitzsimons, with judge Ron Speed, won the Junior Section. Photo - submitted

The focus was on trees

The theme was Trees in Our Changing Environment and 87 budding
photographers captured their view
through the lens.
Moorabool Environment Group held
an inaugural photographic competition at the Lerderderg Library last
Sunday, with spokesperson Rose De
la cruz saying that entries came from
far and wide.

The competition featured a great

range of beautiful trees in different settings. Three primary schools
participated in the junior section
and the open section attracted both
hobby photographers and semi
professionals.
Judge Ron Speed, President of the
Victorian Photographic Society came
from Bendigo to carry out the difficult task of selecting winners.

He praised the high standard of entries, Ms De la cruz said.

Keely Fitzsimons took out the Junior
Prize ($50) and Matthew Page received $200 for first prize in the Open
section. Jennifer Jones received $100
for second prize in the Open category.
All of the entries will be on display at
the Lerderderg Library Art Space for
viewing until the end of July.

Lowlifes
disrupt
commuters
VANDALS were responsible for extensive train delays on the Ballarat line last
week.
Trackside signalling cables were cut along the rail
corridor between Bacchus
Marsh and Ballan.
V/Line chief executive
Theo Taifalos said there
were delays and cancellations on June 15 and 16,
with four trains cancelled
and commuters transferred
to road coaches.
With a third attack in as
many days, Im sure that
the community has had
enough of these lowlife
individuals, Mr Taifalos
said.
Our customers are again
having their travel plans
disrupted by criminals
who have no respect for
other members of the
community.
Victoria Police are investigating the incidents.
Anybody with information is encouraged to call
Crimestoppers on 1800 333
000.

Expansion near complete

Progress is underway on
the new Ballan Mens Shed.
Last week the concrete slab
was poured for the 12 metre
x 14 metre structure and the
shed was delivered ready
for construction.
Ballan Mens Group member Frank Higgins said the
new shed would replace an
existing 5m x 7m shed and
allow the group to take on
larger woodwork and metalwork projects.

It will mean we can do

bigger jobs and store them
onsite. The existing shed is
full of machinery and only
has two workbenches. At
the moment other equipment including a near new
metal lathe, large quality
wood lathe and combination saw are all stored at
peoples places, Mr Higgins said.
The new shed will also
have a disabled toilet and
tea station.

Mr Higgins said the Ballan

Mens Group currently had
about 50 members and met
each Wednesday between
9am and 2pm at the rear
of the Mechanics Hall in
Ballan.
The hope is that we will
get more interest and open
more often if theres a demand for it, he said.
Were hopeful that its
ready for occupation in the
first week of July.

People dug deep

ABOUT $34,000 was raised
at the June 14 appeal for
Cameron Dunne, the young
Dunnstown footballer who
was hospitalised following
a football accident which
damaged his spine. And the
figure keeps rising.
A list of almost 100 organisations and businesses either donated goods or services to be auctioned at the
appeal, or donated money
to help cover the medical
costs for Cameron as he
undergoes rehabilitation to
learn to walk again.
Individuals and families
also donated directly into
an account set up for Cameron at the Commonwealth
Bank.
His mother Sharyn Dunne

said she just couldnt believe it and she didnt realise how much people cared.
It will help pay for his
medical costs but also help
pay for his loss of wages,
she said.
Everyone has helped so
much, in particular Mal
(Mark Mullane), Lisa and
Bianca (Leonard). To know
that money is there to help
is just amazing.
She said almost $60,000
had been donated since
Cameron had his accident,
including $4000 raised by
the Dunnstown Football
Club to cover the ambulance trip to a Melbourne
hospital on May 10.
His ambulance cover
lapsed just three weeks be-

fore the accident, she said.

Despite experiencing intense pain, Mrs Dunne said
Cameron remained upbeat
and positive and she was
there during visiting hours
(11am 8pm) nearly every
day.
You dont realise what a
job youve done as a parent until something like
this has happened. Hes
had a couple of down days
but overall hes been really
good, she said.
Camerons
roommate
Mitchell Prendergast is his
inspiration. They will be
friends forever. His mum
Emilie has been there for
me as well. I dont know
what wed do without
them.

Dear Editor,
In response to Simon Ramsays letter last week (MN 10
June) and Tom Kingstons
article this week (MN 17
June), I would highly encourage people if they have
not yet watched the documentaries Gasland (Part
1 & 2) to do so. This highly
evasive and detrimental
process known as fracking should not be allowed
to happen. Unfortunately it
already is in some parts of
Australia (and many parts
of the world), but we need
to stop it!!! It ruins not only
the environment and water supplies, but peoples
health and their lives. The
only way to stop this movement is through societal/
community awareness and
for these communities to
stand up and say NO to
the government. I would
encourage people to attend these meetings and
to not be bought out by the
big companies. Lobby to
Mr. Ramsay, to the government, to environmental
groups to whomever is taking action against it. Its a
serious problem that we all
need to face.

Dear Editor,
Sea levels have been rising and falling without any
help from humans for as
long as Earths oceans have
existed.
The fastest and most
alarming sea changes to
affect mankind occurred at
the end of the Pleistocene
Ice Age. Seas rose about
130m about 12,000 years
ago, at times rising at five
metres per century. Sea levels then fell as ice sheet and
glaciers grew in the recent
Little Ice Age some Roman
ports used during the Roman Warm Era are now far
from the sea even though
sea levels have recovered
somewhat during the Modern Warm Era.
Many natural factors cause
sea levels to rise - melting of land-based glaciers
and ice sheets; warming
and expansion in volume
of the oceans; extraction
of groundwater which
ends up in the oceans; and
sediments, sewerage, plant
debris and volcanic ash
washed into the oceans by
rivers, storms and glaciers.
In addition, tectonic forces
cause some blocks of land
to rise while others fall,
hence the paradox of sea
levels appearing to rise on
one coastline while falling
on another.

Sea levels are always

changing, at times very
destructively. Waves move
sea levels by a few metres
and at places like Derby,
WA, king tides can move
sea levels by eleven metres.
Then there are rogue waves
up to 30 metres high which
have sunk oil tankers, and
tsunamis which can smash
coastlines with a ten metre
wall of water moving at over
800 km per hour.
Despite coping with all of
the above, climate alarmists say we should be scared
to death by the threat of
seas rising gently at 1mm
PER YEAR. Even a slowmoving sloth could escape
water rising at that rate.
King Canute showed his
nobles that no man can
hold back the rising sea.
Its time the climate alarmists learned Canutes lesson
and focussed on real world
problems.
Even if we ceased using all
carbon fuels for electricity
and transport, no one could
measure the effect of that
huge sacrifice on global sea
levels.

Dear Editor,
As a clinical psychology
PhD student at the Australian National University, I

am seeking to research and

ultimately aid in the treatment of Australian women
with eating and weight
problems.
Increasing attention has
been given to Australias
rising obesity rates 1 in
2 individuals were overweight or obese according
the Victorian Governments
2010 health statistics. This
conflict is of particular relevance to rural and remote
areas of Australia, where
overweight/obesity rates
are the highest. Within
Victoria in 2008, 53.8% of
adults living in rural areas
were overweight or obese
compared to their urban
counterparts at 46.8%.
Reasons identified for this
disparity include higher
costs, and limited availability of healthy foods, and
perhaps against the grain
of common understanding,
data indicate that rural persons lead more sedentary
lifestyles.
The Health risks surrounding such statistics are
well understood by health
professionals given obesity is a major risk factor in
chronic illness including
kidney disease, Type 2 Diabetes and cardiovascular
disease. However, recent
research has revealed a different perspective that has
largely gone un-noticed:

A Ballarat district woman

has been placed on a three
month good behaviour
bond for offering to sell a
noxious weed at a Ballan
market.
The
accused
pleaded
guilty to offering to sell,
planting and possessing a
noxious weed, namely orange hawkweed, at the Ballan market in March of this
year.
Magistrate Lethbridge said
that these matters were serious and the plants had the
potential to spread widely,
but accepted the accused
had made a mistake and
was remorseful.
The charges were found
proven and the accused
placed on a three-month
good behaviour bond.
Speaking outside the court
DEPIs Andrew Staley said
the case highlighted the
importance of market holders knowing the plants they
are offering for sale.
Orange hawkweed may
be an attractive flowering
plant but more importantly it is a prohibited weed
which can be highly invasive, especially in colder
climates.
Orange hawkweed is a

Underage CFA helps with gas leak

car chase
TWO 15-year-old youths
were arrested last Wednesday following a car chase
which took place near
Balliang.
The pursuit commenced
when the driver of an allegedly stolen car refused to
pull over when police tried
to intercept the car on the
Geelong-Bacchus
Marsh
Road around 3.30pm on
Tuesday, June 17.
The white Holden Commodore sedan was allegedly used in several offences over previous days,
including thefts and police
pursuits.
The car was driven through
several farm fences before
coming to rest in a paddock

off Balliang Road.

The two occupants fled
from the car, which resulted in an extensive search
by police including the air
wing, the dog squad and
two off-road motorcycles.
The search was called off
around 10pm on Tuesday
but recommenced early
the next morning after a
sighting of the youths in the
vicinity of Brisbane Ranges
Road.
The boys were arrested at
10.30am, Wednesday, June
18 and are currently being
spoken to by police in relation to the alleged theft of
the car and several other
incidents that occurred in
the area last week.

THREE CFA trucks

from Ballan and
Gordon attended a
gas leak at the new
Ballan hospital
building site on Inglis
St at 12.11pm last
Wednesday.
A spokesperson for
the CFA said it
appeared contractors
struck a gas pipe
during building works.
Main street traffic was
reduced to one lane
with traffic controllers
while a plumber was
contacted to repair
the damage.
The CFA trucks left
approximately one
hour after they were
called out.

Swim all year round

It can be hard jumping into the pool during winter, but stopping a
childs swimming routine can affect their skill development more
than you might think.
Paul Sadler Swimland Bacchus Marsh is calling on local parents
to keep their children enrolled in swimming lessons this winter at
a time when swim lessons are likely to be a childs only exposure
to water.
Paul Sadler Swimland has shared its tips to keep your children
motivated about swimming lessons during winter by:
1. Ensuring your child is dried and wrapped up warmly after
swimming lessons

2. Bringing a hairdryer to the pool (if one is not provided)

3. Dressing children in warm items of clothing, such as scarves
and beanies, before leaving the pool
4. Ensuring your child has eaten before their lesson but is not
swimming with a belly full of fatty or sugary foods (as this
could lead to fatigue and often an upset stomach)
5. Continuing to celebrate your childs proud moments in the pool.
Paul Sadler Swimland Bacchus Marsh offers a warm environment
in and out of the water. To enquire about swimming lessons

across regional Victoria
the story is one of steady

Cosy 3 bedroom brick veneer home set on a larger corner

allotment of approximately 1/4 acre at the quieter end of
town but still within walking distance to all amenities.
All bedrooms are carpeted and offer BIRs with the main
bedroom also having a ceiling fan. The kitchen provides
gas cooking with a pantry and tiled floor coverings to all
wet areas, with the lounge room having carpet, a ceiling
fan and a recently added gas log fire. There is also the
added bonus of a new reverse cycle air conditioner, plus
a 2KW solar panel to help with the cost of power. The
bathroom provides a separate shower and bath. Access to
the single garage via the hallway. This home is perfect for
those starting out or for someone looking to move to a well
established low maintenance home with lovely gardens.

What is driving the global change?

From news reports this
week it appears that Al Gore
is returning to Australia in
the not too distant future
and conducting some important workshops on all
things environmental. So
in honour of his visit I would
like to quote from his latest book, The Future Six
Drivers of Global Change
(Random House New York
2013). The following quotations are from some of the
leading scientists in their
fields. They certainly contain something to ponder.
 he director of the U.S.
T
National Oceanic and
Atmospheric
Administration, Jane Lubcheno,
on ocean acidification,
Global Warmings evil
twin.

Recent observations in
both the west Antarctica
and Greenland already
confirm a rapid and accelerating loss of ice. After
a highly unusual melting
event that affected 97%
of Greenlands surface

in July 2012, Bob Corell,

chairman of the Arctic
Climate Impact Assessment said, It shocked the
hell out of us.
 cientist were shocked in
S
2012 at the discovery of
the largest algae bloom
ever recorded in Earth extending from open areas
of the Arctic ocean underneath the remaining ice
cover a phenomenon
that has never been seen
before and was considered impossible.

Temperature is probably the single most important
environmental
factor influencing insect
behaviour, distribution,
development,
survival,
and reproduction.It has
been estimated that with
a 2 degree C temperature
increase, insects might
experience one to five
additional lifecycles per
season. According to cassava (vital food source in
Southeast Asia) entomologist Tony Bellotti, The

cassava pest situation in

Asia is pretty serious as
it is. But according to our
studies, rising temperatures could make things a
whole lot worse. One outbreak of an invasive species is bad enough, but our
results show that climate
change could trigger multiple, combined outbreaks
across Southeast Asia,
Southern China, and the
cassava-growing areas of
Southern India.
The impact of temperature
increases on crop yields
Columbia researcher
Wolfram Schlenker, I
think theres been an
under-recognition of just
how sensitive crops are to
heat, and how fast heat exposure is increasing.
oral reefs are particuC
larly important because,
according to experts, approximately one quarter
of all ocean species spend
at least part of their lifecycles in, on and around
reefs. Half of the Great

Barrier Reef corals have

died in the last 27 years
according to the Australian Institute of Marine
Science.

Two social scientists
Jane Risen at the University of Chicago and Clayton
Critcher at the University
of California asked two
groups of people the same
questions about global
warming with the only
difference being the temperature in each room.
Those who responded in a
room that was 10 degrees
warmer gave answers
indicating
significantly
larger support for doing
something to counter
global warming than the
group in the cooler room.
The differences showed
up among both liberal and
conservatives.
 resident Ronald Reagan,
P
when confronting the
need for nuclear arms
control, in a speech to the
United Nations General
Assembly said, In our ob-

session with antagonisms

of the moment, we often
forget how much unites all
the members of humanity. Perhaps we need some
outside, universal threat
to make us recognise this
common bond. I occasionally think how quickly
our differences worldwide
would vanish if we were
facing an alien threat
from outside this world.
And finally I thought it
worth quoting from a significant figure of two centuries ago who, when confronted by something too
uncomfortable to accept,
had this to say.
The person was Pope Pius
IX (1792 1878) and he is
talking about Charles Darwins book, On the Origin
of Species and the theory
of evolution Darwin, in
great detail, outlined in the
book.

Dr Constantin James
(French physician and
naturalist) refuted so well
the aberrations of Darwinism A system that is
repugnant at once to history, to the tradition of all
peoples, to exact science,
to observed facts, and even
to reason itself, would seem
to need no refutation. But
the corruption of this age,
the machinations of the
perverse, the danger of the
simple, demand that such
fancies, altogether absurd
though they are, should
since they borrow the mask
of science be refuted by
true science.
Does this quotation sound
familiar?

Your intellectual powers are strong and your natural
charm gleams. Use this high powered week to carry out
plans and make future arrangements - but find time too,

There is a fine line between nosy and being concerned
and some people may overstep it this week. Sunday is

Ballan FNC v Dunnstown
The reunion of the 1981
Premiership team coincided with the match against
old time rivals Dunnstown
and there were no shortage
of tales of incredible feats.
It was also pleasing to see
Cam Dunne at the ground
and in good spirits. On the
paddock the Blues opened
slowly and at the first break
scores were level. But in the
second quarter the Blues
started to draw away and
they continued to draw
away till the final siren.

the midcourt. Ballan defeated Dunnstown. 13&Under The girls dominated
with excellent passing in attack, and strong defensive
pressure against the opposition. Bethan Boland combined well with Shelby Cox
and Layla Foster-Travers to

take countless intercepts.

Meg Hammond dominated
in goals and was well supported from centre court
players Anais Clifford and
Maddi Alcock. Ballan 20
defeated Dunnstown 4.
15&Under

in the last quarter. Dunnstown 21 defeated Ballan 17.

Its a fact over the last 30 years

the basic costs of living have
grown at a greater pace than
our income but over that journey
there have been some wins too.
Australians cost of living has certainly
altered. For the 27 year period (1984-2011)
Australians household Income rose a very
healthy 217% above and below this line of
equilibrium there was some very interesting
movements.

Topping the list was tobacco which for

smokers has cost them a packet with a rise
of 978%, ironically medical and hospital
expenses rose 560%, dental 356% and
insurance 346%.

Fortunately it hasnt been all one way trafc

with computers and computing equipment
now ten times cheaper over this period. This
-90% reduction has come with the bonus of
quantum leaps in power and portability.

When it comes to our basic necessities bread

rose 256% in fact a loaf was only $0.89 in 1984
and milk was $0.68 for a litre, fruit increased by
262%, lamb 289% and alcohol 261%. Putting a
roof over your head since 1984 is also relatively
more expensive with rent up 223%, mortgage
costs 256% and electricity 253%.

Electrical equipment and appliances are also

cheaper today despite their technological
advances. You can buy a Blu-ray player for
under $40 in many supermarkets almost as
expensive as the new release Blue Ray Disc
you insert into it. TVs were in the past very
expensive and few homes had more than
one, today they are cheap as chips and most

When it comes to the much publicised growth

in house prices, which is cited as the major
reason both Sydney and Melbourne are
considered to be amongst the top 10 most
expensive cities in the world to live in it has
been in a word, meteoric.
Cars on the other hand the traditional other
big ticket item has failed to keep pace with
this growth.
Once a new car was half the average family
home, today it wouldnt even cover a room.
Cars in fact have only increased 19% over
the last 27 years whilst incomes have grown
217%. Petrol also has grown slightly less than
income at 208%.
To put that in perspective in 1986 you
could buy a Mitsubishi Triton 4x4 dual cab
for $24,270 with on-road costs extra. This
naturally aspirated diesel model came
standard with no air conditioning, no power

The good news for those upgrading is aside

from the savings in fuel and repairs for many
the current interest rates are a lot lower than
what they previously may have nanced for. So
in effect they can get into a newer and better
equipped vehicle for less than their current
monthly payments, now that makes logical
sense. For many Consumers changing a car is
like changing over a mobile phone or laptop

Taking emotion and spontaneity out of it,

for many Consumers it just makes common
sense to trade in their old car for something
that most likely will be more economical and
safer and ts their changing driving needs.
Rather than pay the registration and high
maintenance costs on something that is no
longer up to scratch.

and like these products vehicles just seem to

be getting more and more in them for less.
Take the Suzuki GL Alto for example, this
car is rated by Australias peak motoring
bodies as the cheapest car to own and
operate. This month you pay a mere $500
extra for the automatic version, this 4 door
vehicle complete with ABS, electronic
stability control, iPod connectivity, 6 airbags,
Bluetooth and a 5 star ANCAP safety can be
driven away for a super low $12990. Thats
about the same as a at screen TV just over
ten years ago.
What the future holds is anyones guess but
it is hard to see prices and rates getting any
cheaper and right now may just be the best
time ever to purchase and join the 1 million
plus cars that are sold in Australia every year.

There is no doubt June is a peak selling period

for the car industry. It traditionally was borne
about by taxation reasons but now GST has
seen activity spike at the end of each BAS
quarter for businesses whilst for individuals
it is often when their registration becomes
due or their loans are due to be paid out. In
affect the industry has created its own selfperpetuating cycle.

Running and servicing costs today also

are considerably less when you consider
the vehicles of today are not only more
economical but require less frequent servicing
and are also covered as in the case of the
Mitsubishi Triton with capped price servicing
for the rst 60,000km or 4 years.
