Learning and context analyses:

Introduction
Dental Caries are becoming an increasing problem amongst children. The national institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research stated
42% of children 2 to 11 have had dental caries in their primary teeth (NIH, 2004). Fluoride in a varnish form is a safe and easy
method that is applied to children to help prevent dental caries.

Instructional Goal:
By the end of this presentation, the adult learner will be able to perform a fluoride varnish treatment on a child following all the steps
taught in the presentation.

By the end of this presentation the learner will be able to describe the benefits of varnish fluoride and indications for application.

After completion of this course learners will be able to implement a fluoride varnish on children to help reduce their risk for dental
decay. This presentation will help educate the hygienist when to implement this treatment on a child and how it will benefit their
patients. Implementing fluoride varnish treatment on children is a preventative measure for children and can be applied to existing or
incipient caries to help to remineralize the tooth. Health care providers apply this treatment to high-risk children as an aid in oral
health care.

Performance Objectives:
Using a checklist, the dental hygienist will be able to demonstrate how to place fluoride vanish in the mouth following all four steps
on a child in a dental operatory.

On a sheet of paper, the dental hygienist will be able to identify children who would benefit from fluoride and explain the benefits
with at least 90% accuracy

Assessment of Learning Outcomes:
At the end of the presentation, the learner will demonstrate the skills acquired during the training by applying a fluoride treatment on a
child in a dental operatory.

Learner Characteristics
I have been a dental hygienist for over two and a half years. The knowledge of the learners I have gained through my own personal
experience. I will get further knowledge and resources from the Canadian Dental Hygienist of Ontario website. I will also e-mail the
township and following areas to research fluoride levels in our current water system. Most of my information will come from the
instructions from the manufacture of the fluoride. The learners will be approximately six dental hygienists that I have worked with for
over a year. All have a similar background credentials that will apply to this instructional model. The learners will be practicing
registered dental hygienists. Their education will be from a credited college with a diploma in dental hygiene. All hygienists will have
a range in ages and years of experience. All in which will have the background and education in practicing dental hygiene services.

Instructional Setting
The location will take place at a dental office. The setting for this 30-45 min lesion will take place in the boardroom i.e. a class like
setting with a hands on demonstration in the dental operatory. The learners will be able to practice the skills learnt in the dental
operatory on each other. Hygienist will be sitting in a circle formation at desks where presenter is up front for demonstration purposes.
There will be pictures, flip chart, visual aids, and a video demonstrating the skills of applying fluoride. Once video is completed the
learners will gather around in a dental operatory as I demonstrate the application of a fluoride treatment on a volunteer. Once
completed the lesion the students will have time to practice on each other in the operatory. I will be observing and answering
questions as needed. This is a great way to provide feedback and make suggestions as needed. The performance of the evaluation will
be completed in a clinical setting. The instructional setting will take place in a classroom like setting and a dental operatory for a
demonstration and practice.

like space below.

Instructional Strategies
1) Sequencing of objectives (what order will you cover the objectives in and what is your justification for this?

My objectives will go in order according to instructional analysis and chart above. My reasoning for outlining my objectives like I
have is because I feel its important to build a solid foundation with the students before implementing the skills taught. I laid out the
objectives, as I would complete a step-by-step fluoride treatment.

Objectives Justification of order
Given a child who is in your dental chair, the learner will be able
to identify (select) if the child needs a fluoride varnish treatment
by using the Caries risk assessment guidelines.

Before one can apply a fluoride treatment you must understand
and be able to identify who would benefit from having one. In
dental hygiene all treatment plans must be client centered.
Therefore, you must provide reasoning as to why you providing
treatment on a patient. Using the Caries risk assessment will help
determine who needs fluoride and provides criteria in which
explains why they need the treatment.
Given a child that needs a fluoride treatment, the learner will be
able to explain 4 benefits of a fluoride varnish treatment by
verbally explaining the benefits to the parents/caregiver using a
reference sheet with the list of benefits.

Once you have determine the patents would benefit from a
fluoride treatment communication is the next step in moving
forward on the application process. You need to obtain consent
from the parents, as it is there decision to go ahead with
treatment or not on their child. By explaining the 4 benefits the
caregiver is informed as to why were doing the treatment and is
more likely to consent by understanding the benefits.
Given an air water syringe, cotton rolls and low volume suction
the learner will be able to demonstrate isolating techniques by
After getting consent and giving the parent valuable information
about fluoride varnish the learner must first isolate the mouth

isolating the oral cavity and checking the oral cavity for any
moisture/saliva.

before applying the fluoride. By isolating the teeth the varnish
goes on better. It goes on like paint. An example of this is, when
painting a house you paint a dry wall not a wet wall or you will
get runs. Using these three things will allow for proper moisture
control.
Given a fluoride applicator, the learner will demonstrate the
application of a fluoride on a child by applying the fluoride
varnish to all surfaces of the teeth following the 4 application
steps.

Now that the teeth are nice and dry its time to apply the fluoride.
Using a reference paper that gives the post op instructions for a
fluoride varnish, the leaner will paraphrase the post op
instructions for a fluoride treatment to the child and caregiver
using the listed post op instructions provided from the
manufacturer as a reference.

Once the fluoride is applied its important to give the child and
parent post-op instructions at the very end of the appointment so
the application is most effective. Waiting until the end of the
appointment will also keep it fresh in their mind.
Using a records sheet in the chart, the learner will outline the
completed treatment in the patients chart following the Canadian
Dental Hygienist of Ontario (CDHO) guidelines for
documentation.

You have to have learned the above objectives in order to
effectively and accurately document the treatment you provided.

2) The pre instructional activity will be to ask how many people are familiar with Caries Risk Assessment. If all answers yes then I
continue with my plan if someone answers no I will do a brief summary of the caries risk assessment. I feel as experienced
uoal Analysis: Aftei completion of this instiuctional lesson, uental hygienist will be able to iuentify, explain, uemonstiate, anu

professionals that have been in the dental field for two plus years its common knowledge and understands of the basic concepts and
principles.

3) I will present the learning material in a classroom like setting. I will provide an itinerary that included objectives for learners to
follow along so objectives are clearly being explained and students understand whats expected of them. I will provide a power point
with the information as well as provide a handout and visual aids. The media I will use will be a prerecorded video of a demonstration
of a fluoride treatment and will review everything I just discussed in the lesson. I will present this at the end of the instruction as a
review of the presented materials. After the media is presented the learners will go to a dental operatory and a hands on demonstration
of a fluoride treatment will be done on a volunteer. The learners will have time after the presentation to practice on each other as I
observe to provide feedback and guidance. During the lesson I will keep the learners engaged by asking questions getting feedback
and allowing them to actively participate.

4) Student participation activities will be when we break up into groups of 2 or 3 and practice fluoride treatments on their group
members. Its a great way to get them in a clinical setting and gain experience to be confident enough to provide fluoride treatments
on children. I will be observing which will allow the students to ask questions and give me the opportunity to give feedback/guidance.
Interacting with other students will also allow for the opportunity for the students to learn from each other and answer each others
questions. After the activity we will gather back in the boardroom and I will go over common issues students were having. Ill also tell
them the questions that were asked through out the activity with answers incase others wondering the same questions know the
answers. This will be a great opportunity to ask the class for feedback on the lesson and go over the summative evaluation criteria.
