1. INTRODUCTION
In the frame of the agreement between Tunnelconsult and AGP Metro, we have been requested to analyze and
report on the monitoring documents prepared by ILF relevant to stations and tunnel excavation within the
context of Warsaw Underground Line II Project.
The present report specifically analyses the document referenced as [3], [4] & [5], relevant to the Building
Permit of stations C09 and C13. The revision has been made based on the available documents delivered by
AGP Metro and the information acquired during Mr. Della Valles visit in Warsaw (March 2010).

4. C9 AND C13 STATIONS
The two documents received deal with C9 & 13 stations monitoring, where we believe and urgent definition is
needed because they will be used for tunnel excavation as indicated in the actual construction plan. In order to
better appreciate the overall situation, we deem suitable to detail hereby a synthetic description of geological
profiles at stations locations.

C9 - Rondo Daszyskiego

As it can be inferred from Figure 4.1, in C9 station
sector the following geological units are
encountered from surface to depth:
- made ground formed by clayey-sandy
debris (variable thickness from 3m to
8m);
- moraine deposit (variable thickness from
2m to 5m);
- fluvioglacial fine sands in the western
part of the station and lacustrine deposits
(fine sands, clays and muds) in the
eastern part;
- moraine and lacustrine deposits formed
by cohesive soils like sandy clays, silts
and silty clays (variable thickness from
1m to 5m);
- fluvioglacial deposits represented by
sands of different grain size distribution
with some clay lenses;
- sandy and gravelly soil (thickness of
about 35m).
- water levels are constant at about 8
meters below surface.

C13 Powile

As it can be inferred from Figure 4.2,
in C13 station sector the following
geological units are encountered from
surface to depth:
- made ground formed by soil-
debris-humus (variable
thickness from 5m to 10m);
- fluvio-glacial deposit formed
by sandy-gravel material with
thin lenses of cohesive soil
(variable thickness from 4m
to 11m);
- Pliocene deposit represented
mainly by high plasticity clays
and silty clays, silts, sandy
silts and silty fine sands.
- Water level is likely to be
driven by the Vistula seasonal
variation.

In [4] and [5] three different building influence areas are defined as indicated in [3]:
- zone S
0
that coincides with the plan geometrical limits of the excavation
- zone S
I
that corresponds to the direct influence area with a width equal to the depth of excavation (H
exc
)
- zone S
II
that corresponds to the indirect influence area with a width equal to 2 H
exc
measured from the
edge of zone S
I

Monitoring system is then differentiated basing on the building location (S
0
, S
I
and S
II
) and its actual structural
conditions.

A little incoherence has been detected in the depth reached by C09 station: it is indicated that depth of
excavation is 17.0m in [2] and 16.0m in [4].

5. COMMENTS
For easy reference and immediate appreciation we have prepared the below table where we show the
comments on document Description of monitoring design for station C9 [4]. Since the two documents [4] &
[5] are, in practical terms, identical, the following comments are applicable to both of them.

Table 5.1 Comments to [4]
ILF [4] TC comments
Paragraph 1.1 Three different influence zones are defined, following
the indications showed in [2]. We deem that the
adopted zones are conservatives, i.e. larger enough to
cover station excavation influence zone.

In this zone heaving of the ground can appear due to
soil relaxation
In general and according to our experience, we do not
believe that heave can be associated to station
construction, a part very special ground conditions
that could theoretically make it possible.
Paragraph 1.2 We have verified that the list of the buildings located
in the influence zones coincides with the one that
appears in paragraph 5.4.2.2.3 of [2].
We have also notice that buildings in Hrubieszowska
5/3/1 have not been included, reasons should be
indicated in the report.
Paragraph 1.3

Monitoring design defines means of measurements
of vertical deformations of the buildings in impact
zones
We recommend check also horizontal deformations
which are normally expected when Dwall construction
method is adopted. It is important to recall that
horizontal deformations are likely to damage buildings
more than the vertical ones.
Measurements will be carried out from the
commencement of the construction works

Frequency of measurements is dependent on
schedule of construction works for station C13

We recommend to start deformation measurements
some month earlier that construction starts in order to
recognize building deformation behaviours which are
independent from the Project.

We deem that this nomenclature error (C13 instead of
C9) is due to the superposition of the documents
referring to C9 and C13.

Take the zero measurement at least 10 days prior
to commencement of construction works
We stress that this period is too short. We
recommend take the reference measurement as early
as possible and practicable.

Location of levelling benchmarks Monitoring Design should contemplate the use of
other measuring devices, like optical prisms.
Furthermore they should not be placed only at the
building bottom but also be disposed along a vertical
alignment in order to check structure rotations.
Chapter 2 We recommend install the piezometers network as
soon as practicable in order to record the seasonal
water level oscillation previous to the works.

It would be necessary to specify the kind of
piezometers to be employed (open piezometers or
pressure cells). Chapter 3 Deformation limits should be given by D-walls
designer, at least for the inclinometers at the stations.
Moreover the station structural design shall specify
expected vertical and horizontal deformations in the
stated building influence areas and check them
against building conditions.
Chapter 4 We recommend carrying out the reference
measurement as soon as practicable. We deem that
three days is a too short period.

All these comments are fully valid for the document related to station C13 [5], except the ones regarding to the
sensitive building list and the nomenclature error.
In case of station C13, due to the notable thickness of the made ground layer (maximum thickness of 10m), we
recommend fix vertical and horizontal deformation limits and measurement frequency with special attention.

Document [3] collects all the monitoring criteria from the basic reference documents [1] and [2], offering a
simplified vision of all the monitoring aspects to take into account. This document can be a useful work
instrument and represents a good start point for the monitoring system.

6. CONCLUSION
We deem that, with the remarks and recommendations shown above, the documents prepared by ILF can be
satisfactory as a starting point for the development of the construction design, where a much more detailed
approach shall be developed, taking into account the expected deformations induced by the excavation of the
stations and the building allowable limits.
