47 votes separate Haynes, Wright in race
Republican candidates
Rodney Wright and Simon
Haynes will face off in a June 10
runoff election that will deter-
mine the Republican Partys
nominee in the November gen-
eral election.
In Tuesdays preferential pri-
mary election, Haynes led the
seven-candidate race by drawing
4,321 votes, followed by Wright
with 4,274 votes. The two were
separated by only 47 votes.
After the tallies were in, both
candidates said they are looking
forward to a clean campaign in
the runoff.
The candidate who wins
June 10 will be challenged in
November by Rodney Goshien,
the Democratic Partys nominee
Vote totals for the other can-
didates in the race were: Kevin
Cooper with 1,563 votes; Daniel
Dodson with 1,110 votes; E.J.
Harris with 1,315 votes; Tim
Dudderar with 1,471 votes;
and Bruce Pennington with439
votes.
Pennington, a former sheriff
who retired under pressure,
had announced on May 1 that
he was withdrawing from the
race, but his name was already
printed on the ballot. He never
notified the Saline County
Clerks Office of his decision to
withdraw, so his votes had to be
counted.
Even if Pennington had offi-
cially notified the clerks office
of his withdrawal, the ballots
could not be reprinted at that
juncture.

Arey defeats
Murphy by
wide margin
for GOP slot
When early voting numbers were
released shortly after the polls closed on
Tuesday, Haskell Mayor Jeff Arey had a
comfortable lead in the county judges race
in the Republican Partys primary election.
And when the final tallies were in, Arey
had soundly defeated Benton Alderman
Kerry Murphy in the contest to become
their partys nominee.
Upon seeing the numbers, Arey said he
felt good about the lead, but would wait
until all the votes were counted before
deciding if he could relax.
A little more than two hours later, Arey
had won the Republican nomination with a
final margin of 62.5 percent of the vote to
37.5 percent for Murphy.

Sample takes office 2nd time around
After an unsuccessful
bid for Saline County
Circuit Clerk in 2012,
Myka Bono-Sample
found victory the sec-
ond time around. On
Tuesday she defeated
Patrick Rhodes in the
race to determine the
Republican Partys nom-
ination for the office.
Without opposition
from the Democratic
Party, Sample will
become the new circuit
clerk and will be sworn
into office in January
2015.
Despite a small
margin of votes in her
favor when early vote
totals were announced,
Sample did not feel
confident of an eventual
victory. However, when
all the precincts were
counted and the final
tallies were announced,
Sample had won the
contest by drawing 53.5
percent of the vote total,
compared to 46.5 per-
cent for Rhodes.
Sample expressed
her appreciation for the
support she received
during the campaign.
I would like to say
thank you to everyone
who voted for me, she
said. I could not have
done this without the
support of my family
and friends.

Bond issues
fail in Bryant
Bryant voters rejected both parts of a bond
issue included on the preferential primary election
ballot Tuesday.
This issue involved four questions that asked
voters to extend a current bond. The money would
then be used to fund street improvements with a
focus on Boone Road and park improvements.
Im glad the voters had the opportunity to voice
their opinion on these street and park issues, said
Mayor Jill Dabbs. We must be responsive to this
vote,
re-evaluate the citizens wishes and make a bet-
ter plan moving forward in which they can fully
support.

With the tallies completed in
the Republican Partys preferen-
tial primary election Tuesday,
no candidate for Saline County
assessor had attained the more
than 50 percent of votes neces-
sary to become the partys nomi-
nee.
A runoff election will be held
June 10 between Gary Ballard
and Bob Ramsey.
Ballard led the race, receiv-
ing 4,746 votes or 35.12 percent
of the total. Ramsey drew 4,259
votes or 30.62 percent of the
total.
Two other candidates were
listed on the ballot: Donna
Huddleston and Lisa Dodson.
Huddleston received 2,808 votes
or 20.19 percent of the total vote
and Dodson received 2,098 votes
or 15.08 percent of the total vote.
Dodson had announced in

overcome the gap after the
early votes were announced,
said Murphy. As precinct
totals were announced, the
gap continued and it became
clear to Murphy that he had
lost the race.
Even with an apparently
insurmountable lead, Arey
was not content to claim vic-
tory as he entered his watch
party at Luigis in Bryant.
Ive seen too many things
happen in races. You can
never be sure until the last
vote is counted. he said.
There is no Democratic
candidate to face in
November, but Arey will be
facing Libertarian candidate
Brandon Lumpkins.
Arey was endorsed by the
current judge, Lanny Fite.
Fite decided to seek a posi-
tion in the Arkansas House of
Representative and drew no
opposition for the seat.
Arey said he learned long
ago to expect the unexpected
when taking any office for the
first time.
What you do on day one
may not be the focus you
expected when running for
office. Sometimes you have to
begin work in a job to see the
most important priority. he
said. If elected in November,
Arey has said that roads will
be a main priority. He said the
county is in good shape due
to the leadership of Fite and
he wants to continue along
the same path set by the long-
time judge.
Arey won the race with
8,810 votes compared to 5,282
for Murphy.
When asked about his
future, Murphy said he will
spend the next few days
deciding whether to pursue
re-election to the Benton City
Council.

pursue any of the projects.
The second question
would have amended the
2006 ordinance when the
tax was originally added.
Approximately 62 percent
of people voted against the
issue.
The last two questions
would determine how the
money should be spent. Fifty-
two percent of the voters
opposed street improvements
and 55 percent voted against
park improvements.
A community needs

next step, and we keep on
keeping on, Dabbs said. We
have a lot of positive things
going on in Bryant, and we
need to focus on the positive
and do the best we can to
meet the growing needs of
our city.

hard to make the Circuit
Clerks Office the best in the

Rhodes is currently
employed part-time in the
circuit clerks office under
the supervision of the cur-

Milligan.
Milligan defeated Sample
in her previous attempt to

on Tuesday became the
Republican Partys nominee
for state treasurer. He defeat-

around 60 percent of the vote
total.
Milligan faces Democrat

However, Dodson never
made her withdrawal offi-

After the results were
announced, Ballard said
he is pleased to be in the
runoff.
I am appreciative for all
the support I got, he said.
I look forward to the cam-
paign. I will be campaign-

three weeks.
Ballard emphasized that
he would continue to be
running a positive cam-
paign. I will stick to only
my attributes and contribu-
tions without evolving into
a mud-slinging contest. If I
am to win, I will win on my
own merits ....
Early in the evening,
Ramsey said he was hopeful
that he would make it to a
runoff contest.
After results were
announced, he said he is

He added that he
believes that the votes that
went to Dodson could have
influenced the overall out-

Election Roundup: 3 runoffs set for June 10
Fewer than 27 percent
of Saline Countys regis-
tered voters cast ballots in
Tuesdays preferential pri-
mary election, yet that rep-
resented one of the states
largest voter turnouts on a
percentage basis.
Saline County has 67,016
registered voters and the
election drew a total of
17,910 voters, according to
tallies from County Clerk
Doug Curtis office.
The election decided a
number of nominees for
county and state races and
even some victors outright
since they have no oppo-
nents in the fall general
election.
In the county judges
race in the Republican pri-
mary, Haskell Mayor Jeff
Arey, drew 62.52 percent
of the vote total, soundly
defeating Benton Alderman
Kerry Murphy. Arey will
face Libertarian candidate
Brandon Lumpkins in the
general election.
All races are not over,
however, since three con-
tests ended with no candi-
date receiving more than 50
percent of the total votes.
They are headed for a run-
off election on June 10.
Republican nominees for
the county sheriffs race
and assessors races will
not be determined until
after the runoff, along with
the state attorney generals
Republican nominee.
In the sheriffs race, it
will take a runoff to deter-
mine the Republican Partys
nominee. Simon Haynes led
the seven-candidate race by
garnering 4,321 votes and
Rodney Wright drew 4,274
votes.
The winner will face
Democratic candidate
Rodney Goshien in
November.
Goshien was the only
Democratic candidate, so
his race was not included
in the Democratic Party
primary.
The Republican nominee
for assessor also will be
determined in the runoff
election.
Tuesdays election con-
cluded with Gary Ballard
leading a four-candidate
ticket and candidate Bob
Ramsey falling close
behind. Ballard received
4,746 votes and Ramsey
drew 4,259.
Both that race and the
sheriffs race included a
candidate who publicly
announced withdrawal from
the contest, but neither ever
notified the county clerks
office. At the time they
announced the withdrawals,
the ballots already had been
printed.
In the assessors race
Lisa Dodson drew 2,098
votes, which had to be
counted since she was on
the ballot.
In the sheriffs race Bruce
Penningtons 439 votes also
had to be counted for the
same reason.
Overall, the election
process locally went well,
according to County Clerk
Doug Curtis.
We had a few little hic-
cups, but nothing serious,
Curtis said. We were more
than pleased with the elec-
tion process.
He pointed out that the
election had drawn a good
turnout in early voting.
Overall, it was above aver-
age for a non-presidential
preferential primary.
He attributed the inter-
est in the election to the
Republican primary races
for sheriff and assessor.
A lot of families have
been involved in the cam-
paign, he said. A lot of
people put a lot of money
and time into it.
Noting that this was his
first big election since
becoming county clerk,
Curtis said he is pleased
with how the process
worked here.We were one
of the first counties to com-
plete tabulations and get the
results out to people.
We were either first or
nearly first in that, he said.
Curtis explained that any-
one who did not vote in the
Republican Party primary
election will not be able to
vote in that primarys runoff
election unless they voted
nonpartisan.
If they did not vote at all
Tuesday, they can vote in
the runoff, he explained.
The runoff ballot also
will include the Republican
nominee for attorney gen-
eral. The candidates are
Leslie Rutledge and David
Sterling.
Statewide, Rutledge
received 47 percent of the
total with 78,126 votes and
Sterling drew 39 percent
with 64,450 votes.

Election Day 2014
Tax issue fails in Bauxite vote
Bauxite voters rejected
a proposed sales tax in
Tuesdays preferential pri-
mary election.
The issue failed by a vote
spread of 53 to 47.
Voters had been asked
to approve a half-percent
local sales and use tax for
use toward the expense of
sewer grinder pumps and
other expenses associated
with the Bauxite Waste
Water Treatment Plant.
Currently, there is an
additional cost associated
with water in Bauxite to
compensate for the cost of
the sewer grinders.
Bauxite Mayor Johnny
McMahan said, Naturally I
was disappointed in the out-
come of the sales tax, but
I was not surprised, as it is
always hard to pass a sales
tax in the best of time.
My family and I all voted
for the sales tax as I believe
it was in the best interests
of each citizen person-
ally and also for our town
finances. I was aware of a
core group of former alder-
men who actively lobbied
for its defeat as this group
is determined to do their
best to keep Bauxite in the
period of the cave man.
McMahan continued,
saying, In my opinion, this
issue was a no-brainer
as it would have been
paid mostly by citizens
in the form of sales tax
from Benton, Bryant, Hot
Springs, Malvern and Little
Rock when they had their
garbage disposed at the
landfill, which is where
most of the tax would have
been generated.
The scary part is that
we had 53 citizens that
voted against this issue
that have no brains, which
is a troubling thought and
shows the culture we face
at Bauxite. The defeat of
this tax will ensure that
our sewer treatment plant
will probably never be in
compliance with ADEQ
regulations and the town of
Bauxite will always be on
their radar on that issue.
McMahan concluded by
saying, This defeat will
help keep Bauxite in the
dark ages of progress,
which is what some people
desire, but not all as shown
by the 47 that voted to go
forward in our town.
