AM
LETTER FROM THE TE

Happy Independence Day!

This month marks our nations 238th birthday. Its not a nice, neatly numbered
anniversary like the 200th or 250th, to be sure but it is an important one.
Those 238 years show that Americans are still dedicated to pursuing and protecting freedom, whatever that might mean to them individually and as a nation.
For some, freedom means the ability to make a living doing what they love,
perhaps by sharing with others not only the physical, but the spiritual and
psychological benefits of yoga. For others, its the right to say what they really
think or to make sure everyone has the information they need to make informed
choices (we here at Natures Pathways are pretty partial to this one, well admit).
And for others still, its the simple opportunity to live a healthy, happy life, enjoying the company of friends and family.
What are the freedoms you hold most dear? What do you fight for in your life?
Perhaps you believe it is of the utmost importance to enjoy unspoiled, untainted
natural resources. Jennifer Semrau of Winnebago County Solid Waste offers
information on how you can help protect the environment by using Household
alternatives to hazardous materials. Meanwhile, Outagamie County is celebrating caring for the earth with an upcoming near-zero-waste festival. Learn more
in Tani Grimhs article, Sustainability message is music to the ears.
If youre a mom-to-be, you might be pursuing the freedom to create a birth
plan that works best for you and your baby. Thanks Givings Doula Services
Chelsie Towns offers valuable information in her second Choices in Childbirth
article, while Mothers Advocate Doula Services Mary Smits offers Freedom
from birth myths.
Some people crave freedom from the daily 9-to-5 grind. Lisa Jermain offers
insight into how network marketing can help in Thinking outside the cubicle.
This July, take some time to reflect on those opportunities you wouldnt want
to live without and do your part to keep freedom alive.

Is your guy
going through
andropause?
Evaluation and treatment of
male hormonal dysfunction
Kari Jossart, FNP

ot just women are subject to hormone imbalances. As

men age, usually sometime in their mid-40s, their levels
of testosterone begin to notably decline and this is called
andropause. While this is a natural part of aging, the decline in
testosterone production by the testes can be more precipitous in
some men than others. Excessive weight gain, stress, lack of exercise and many medications further contribute to a mans ability to
manufacture testosterone and can lead to symptoms of andropause.

Common symptoms of andropause

Fatigue
Lack of competitive drive
Low sex drive
Irritability
Depression
Loss of muscle mass and strength
Weight gain
Metabolic syndrome
Erectile dysfunction
Sleep disturbances
Osteoporosis
Adverse changes in a mans blood lipid profile

Although andropause can cause some or all of the above symptoms,

they usually dont present as acutely as the symptoms that women
experience in menopause. In fact, most men who are going through
andropause are not even aware of it, and usually accept that their tiredness is a part of the aging process. Unfortunately, one might consider
andropause a lethal condition, as it is associated with diabetes, cancer,
heart disease, stroke, memory loss, Alzheimers and early mortality.
8

Natures Pathways | July 2014

Just like for women, when a man has symptoms of hormonal

dysfunction it is usually not a clear-cut case of one hormone level
being abnormal or even one hormone system. Hormones, acting
as chemical messengers, target specific cells in the body and work
in concert with each other to maintain balance. Similar to instruments in an orchestra, when one is playing too loudly or out of
tune, the overall harmony is affected. The adrenal, thyroid and
sex hormones work in harmony and when one or more becomes
unbalanced it affects the balance of the body as a whole.
Before testosterone or other hormone treatment is considered,
therapies that modulate hormone action such as nutraceuticals,
botanicals, dietary and lifestyle therapies should be considered.
We have good scientific support in their use to improve problems
of fatigue, decreased muscle mass, impotence and other sexual
dysfunctions that are related to male hormonal disturbances.
The solution to the problem may not be as simple as restoring
testosterone levels. For example, testosterone therapy may be of
little benefit unless the problems affecting production of a mans
stress hormones (cortisol and DHEA) are addressed first. Correcting disorders such as adrenal fatigue or chronic stress may lead
to improved testosterone levels and resolve symptoms without
requiring testosterone therapy.
The decision to take testosterone to improve a mans low T (as
drug companies and many on television are now calling it) should
not be made without a comprehensive medical evaluation scheduled with a medical doctor, physician assistant, or nurse practitioner who is specifically trained to use functional medicine to
evaluate and treat hormonal dysfunction. He or she must know
how to get to the root cause of the symptoms by asking the appropriate medical history questions, performing a physical exam,
www.naturespathways.com

and ordering and interpreting the appropriate laboratory test

results to understand each mans pattern of hormonal dysfunction. After this, the best treatment options lifestyle, nutritional,
supplementation and pharmaceutical interventions should be
discussed and chosen.
A complete evaluation of a mans diet, lifestyle, stress and
hormone levels before initiating any course of hormone replacement is needed. If testosterone is indicated, health professionals
should offer standard and custom-dosed bioidentical hormone
replacement therapy guided by comprehensive hormone testing
and regularly monitor for increased risks and side effects after
starting treatment.
Education is an important component at every visit and may
include discussion around the controversies of prostate cancer
prevention, the effect of stress on testosterone, testosterone
replacement with aging and andropause.
Women, if you think your guy is going through andropause and
needs help, please encourage him not to ignore his symptoms and
instead talk to his doctor or nurse practitioner or seek help from
experts who are up on the latest research and treatments available
today.

closeness are gone. There is a wall between

you and your beloved. You dont have as
much to say to each other. Youre not sure
if you really even know who he is. Nor does
it feel like he really knows you. You long
for that special connection you once had.
What created the barriers and how can we
overcome them?
As I have explored my own and others
journey to love, I have found that it takes
an open heart to find true love and keep it.
The obstacles to love are things that cause
our heart to close. I believe the No. 1 obstacle is fear: fear to trust and fear to honestly
share feelings. What if he doesnt like the
real me? We fear that we are unlovable and
it is just a matter of time before she stops
loving me and leaves. Fear that we made
a mistake and we didnt choose the right
person. The excitement of romantic love
and the rush of infatuation temporarily
hide our differences and our fears. We are
able to fearlessly love with open hearts.
Do not lose hope after romantic love
fades; we can use its memory as a sample
of what is available to us. But first, we must
overcome the barriers that block us. The
first step is to become aware of yourself and

same, together you can bring back the magic.

your behaviors. The obstacles are usually

out of awareness; they show up as the
behaviors listed below:
PERFECTIONISM locks us into a
power struggle with self and others.
The need to be right closes the heart to
the self and others.
BLAMING our partner for unhappiness rather than focusing on what it is
we are doing or not doing for ourselves.
JUDGING our partner instead of
looking closely at ourself. Judging is
usually more about you than it is about
what you judge.
MAKING EXCUSES is usually justifying continuing in the same old ways.
Its about what is important to you.
Replace excuses with making an effort
in courage to learn new ways of relating to your beloved.

b!

COMPLAINING comes from a position of powerlessness and an ungrateful heart. Replace complaining with
compassionate communication that
expresses your needs and wants.
The next step is learning how to listen
to the messages of your body. Developing body awareness gives us the ability to
know when we are building armor around
our heart. In their book, Embracing the
Beloved: Relationship as a Path to Awakening, Stephen and Ondrea Levine state,
This armoring of the heart is recognizable
as hardness in the belly. When there is selfprotection, fear, distrust, the belly armors.
The belly becomes rigid with holding in
fears. Our awareness of the hardness in
the belly becomes a perfect biofeedback
mechanism. To help teach this concept,

they have a guided meditation called soft

belly that you can purchase online at http://
levinetalks.com/Shop. Several of my clients
have used this meditation and found it to be
very helpful for increasing their awareness.
Dont give up on your relationship.
Instead, learn how to shift your awareness to
open your heart once again to your beloved.
By taking responsibility for your thinking
and behaving and your partner doing the
same, together you can bring back the magic.
You can grow a loving relationship that
brings joy, fulfillment and peace no matter
what unfolds in the drama of life.

Give your sunkissed skin a nice

summer glow
By Caitlin Brotz

he key to keeping your skin looking

its best is keeping it hydrated.
Besides drinking your 8 daily cups
of H2O, topically applying moisture works
too! Your skin is great at drinking in moisture. One of our favorite topical moisturizers is aloe vera.
Aloe vera has been used throughout the
last 6,000 years of history as natures cureall. How is that for a track record? Today,
aloe is used to help soothe, hydrate and
rejuvenate skin.

12

Natures Pathways | July 2014

So how exactly
does aloe vera
help the skin?

Aloe is comprised of 20
skin-loving minerals, such
as magnesium, sodium, iron
and maganese. These minerals help your skin to work
at its peak performance,
keeping the skin cells plump
and looking their best. Its
an easy bonus for anyone
looking for that fountain of
youth.
Aloe vera is also one of
the only plants that contain
B12. B12 is one of the most
important vitamins you can
consume for healthy skin.
It helps skin maintain its
youthfulness and its healthy
coloring. Make sure you are
getting enough of this wonderful vitamin
to keep your skin glowing.
Aloe also helps your skin by delivering fatty acids, which are the proteins that
make up your skin tissues. Keeping these
proteins healthy helps increase the collagen
production of the skin: Collagen equals
plump skin cells!
So, with all the benefits of aloe on your
skin, its easy to see why youll want to use it
as a hydrating summer mist. Keep it chilled
to use as a cooling mist while you are doing
your favorite summer activity. Use it as an

Back to
basics
Animal chiropractic care
By Karen M. Strickfaden, DVM

eterinary spinal manipulation

technique (VSMT) is commonly
known as animal chiropractic care.
VSMT is a holistic treatment that concentrates on the proper function and health
of an animals spinal column and nervous
system. Some people consider this treatment only after an animal sustains an
injury, yet proper function of the spine is
vital to the complete health of your pet.
Veterinary spinal manipulation technique is used to treat the misalignment and

subluxations of the spine. When the bones

of the spine are misaligned, your pet may
lose flexibility and it may also interfere
with nerve signals to other parts of the pets
body.

Symptoms of subluxations

The following behaviors may indicate that

your pet has a vertebral subluxation:
Posture
Puppy sitting by an adult dog

Your favorite supplement

is 40% off EVERY week*

Holding the tail incorrectly

Decreased mobility in the back or neck
Standing, sitting, walking or lying
abnormally
Incorrect back posture (hunched back
or swayed back)
Uneven muscle tone
Behavior problems
Changes in a pets behavior or attitude
Decreased enthusiasm
Shying away from being touched or
brushed
Crying or whining for no apparent
reason
Not wanting to be picked up or carried
Gait abnormalities
Stiffness upon standing or moving
Stumbling or tripping
A gait that is off

These symptoms may be a sign that your

pet could benefit from spinal manipulation. These symptoms may also be part of
other medical issues. For best results, your
pet should have a physical examination
and spinal assessment.

Causes of subluxations

Treatment

Most pets accept spinal manipulation

treatments without any discomfort or pain.
Many animals will show improvement
immediately following an adjustment.
With most chronic health problems, the
doctor may need to treat your pet several

times to re-establish and maintain normal

function of the spine, joints and nervous
system, according to avcadoctors.com.
When health problems develop over time,
they may take time to repair.

Certification

The American Veterinary Chiropractic Association (AVCA) is a professional

membership group that certifies doctors in
post-graduate animal chiropractic training. The AVCA was developed with input
from both veterinarians and chiropractors
to create standards of care and promote
professional accountability. Through the
certification process, the candidates who

pass written comprehensive and clinical

examinations are deemed qualified to work
in the field of animal chiropractic care.

Start now

Schedule a wellness and chiropractic exam

for your pet. Inform the doctor of any
changes in your pets behavior and discuss
your pets lifestyle. Subluxations are often
present before symptoms become apparent. The diagnosis and treatment of minor
subluxations could prevent further injury
and compensation. VSMT is an important
part of your pets overall health care!

Sustainable Music Festival turns caring
for the earth into music to the ears.
Mark the date: Saturday, August 16, from
noon to 10 p.m. is when The Big Green
returns to the Sunset Park amphitheater
in Kimberly with a full day of live music
by Natty Nation, Purgatory Hill, Galynne
Goodwill, Tall Timbers and Appleton Rock
School.
Presented by Sustainable Fox Valley, this
third-annual near-zero-waste festival also

features locally sourced food, hand-crafted

beer, a local marketplace, kids activities,
speakers and exhibits.
Last year, nearly 80 percent of the waste
generated from the festival was either
composted or recycled. That translates to
0.002 ounces of waste per attendee going
to the landfill, Chris Miller, Outagamie
County recycling coordinator and green
waste co-chair, said.
This year, the goal is to drive that number
closer to 90 percent by increasing recycling

and composting by 5 percent and decreasing landfill waste by another 5 percent.

Recently, the festival also became a certified Travel Green Wisconsin event. Attendees are encouraged to bike, bus or carpool to
the festival to reduce environmental impact.
The Big Green is the areas first event to
adhere to an internationally recognized
framework for sustainability, the ISO
20121 Sustainable Event Management
System Standard.

environmental, social and economic issues
involved with the festival have been identified, and objectives and targets are in
keeping with the principles of sustainable development, said Joanne Gorski,
president of Sustainable Insights LLC and
sustainability coordinator.
Attendees will see those principles in
action, with food prepared by Stone Cellar
Brewpub using locally grown produce
from Riverview Gardens and other local
organic suppliers. In addition, all food
vendors will serve on fully compostable
dinnerware, as certified by the Biodegradable Products Institute.
The local marketplace will offer unique
items, and vendors will be available to
show people how easy it is to transition to
a more sustainable way of living.
Those 21 and older can quench their

thirst with Stone Arch beer brewed in

Appleton, with malt sourced from Chilton.
Completing the circle, the spent grain from
the brewing process is given to local farms
for animal feed.
For the kids, there will be activities that
make learning about sustainability exciting
and fun, including music, arts and crafts
and more.
Throughout the day, speakers and
vendor displays will underscore why
sustainability is important and how small
changes that are simple to make can have
a big impact.
Rounding out the sustainability effort,
electricity for the bands and vendors will
be supplemented by a biodiesel generator
from Fox Valley Technical College and a
solar trailer from the Midwest Renewable
Energy Association.

Expert answers to
your health and
wellness questions
What are the best shoes for
walking and is Greek yogurt
really the healthier option?
By Karmen Nenahlo

Question: I will be starting a walking

program soon and need to purchase a pair of
shoes. What should I be looking for? I want to
make sure I buy the correct shoe for me.
Answer: Congratulations on committing to
your health by joining a walking program. A good shoe
can definitely make your walking more enjoyable and help you
stay on track with your goals.
Shop for shoes in the evening when your foot is slightly swollen.
Make sure you try on both shoes and wear the same socks you are
going to walk in. The shoe should be comfortable right away. If
the shoes are too tight, do not expect them to stretch out. When
picking out a new pair of walking shoes, be sure to consider your
foot shape and size (wide or narrow), and your arch type (flat,
low or high). Once the shoe is on, there should be about a inch
between the end of your longest toe and the shoe.
Large chain sports stores or department stores will have a variety
of shoes to choose from. If you are still unsure about a proper fit,
consider visiting a specialty run/walk store where a professional
can analyze your walk, the size of your foot and check for where
you distribute your weight as you walk. He/she will then show you
a variety of shoes that will be specific to your foot.
Most importantly, buy shoes that are lightweight, breathable
and comfortable.
All walking shoes will eventually show signs of wear and tear,
even if they still feel comfortable. On average, a walking shoe
will last approximately for 300-500 miles. Keep a journal of your

exercise and mileage,

as this will help you
understand
when
your shoes are ready
to be replaced.
Question: Is Greek
yogurt a healthier option
than eating regular yogurt?
Answer: Both types of yogurt in their plain, nonfat or low-fat
form are excellent choices for a healthy diet. Both are low in calories, packed with calcium and contain live bacterial cultures.
Greek yogurt, which has a thicker texture and consistency due
to the removal of liquid whey, lactose and sugar, can pack up to
double the protein, with a typical serving containing 15-20 grams.
Greek yogurt also tends to be lower in carbohydrates, with 5-8
grams for Greek yogurt vs. 13 or more for regular yogurt. Remember, both types of yogurt will have a higher carb content if you
choose fruit flavors or yogurt with added sweetening agents.
Regardless of which type of yogurt you choose, aim for the nonfat
or low-fat versions and add your own fruit to be more in control
of the carb and sugar content.
If you do choose Greek yogurt, take advantage of its
versatility, as it can be used as a substitute for cream
cheese, mayonnaise and butter in many recipes.

Raising a
modern
teenager
By Meridith N. Starling, CISW, MSSW

eading social media and watching the daily news can be

downright depressing. It seems that teen violence, school
shootings and suicide/suicide attempts have been on the
rise. Mental health experts point to depression, anxiety, feeling
like you dont fit in and bullying as triggering factors.
The process of becoming an adult is not easy and raising a
child isnt either. Children count on adults to fix things, but as
adolescents, they want to fix them on their own, and the adults
struggle with letting go.
As children move from elementary school to middle school
and then onto high school, not only are their bodies changing, but
their environment and peer groups also change. There is a lot to
be said about a sense of security and familiarity; changes are scary
and can be difficult. Children go from cubbies, nap time and recess
to lockers with a combination lock, no nap and lots of homework.
They go from really only having one classroom/teacher to multiple
classes, and from not dressing for gym class to changing clothes
in front of peers: the dreaded locker-room moments. This can be
anxiety-producing to say the least.
Recent studies show that the human brain does not fully develop
until well into the 20s. This can help explain some of the irrational,
moody and poor choices (or rather impulsivity) exhibited by teens.
Remember back in middle school and high school when something occurred that today seems minor, but then felt like the end of
the world? For example, not being asked to the school dance leads
to Ill never have a boyfriend! This heart-wrenching, dramatic
thought is real to them in this moment. To them, this may feel like
the end of the world; as parents, we have lived long enough to know
there will be another dance, and another boy or girl.
Teenagers also may feel that their social center or group has
shifted or completely changed. More clubs, activities and sports
are available and this is where diversity is both great and challenging within a peer group. In grade school, parents dictated the
activities in which their children were involved. In middle school

and high school, these students are able to pick clubs, sports, etc.
A lot happens during the school day or right afterward on school
grounds. Friends may go from being best friends to possibly not
having the same interests anymore. As their world opens up, there
is more room to see the differences in one another. There is also
the popularity scale that evolves based on whom is deemed
popular or not.
Gossip is also an issue in schools. This is no new thing, but with
the added ways to communicate via social media, texting, emailing, etc., kids do not get a break from it. They are constantly being
inundated with information. This creates a situation where they
www.naturespathways.com

have no downtime or mind-rest. Having a no-texting-after-8-p.m.

rule may be helpful. Limiting the number of social media sites
teens are permitted to join, as well as placing the family computer
in a common area, can help parents monitor usage. Limiting your
teen in this way may invoke statements like, You are ruining my
life, but they will thank you later maybe 20 years later, but they
will thank you.
Peer relationships and opinions hold more weight/meaning
than parents a lot of the time. Remember, we as parents are old
in their eyes and the teenage mind thinks it knows everything.
Being open with children about their feelings is a great gift we can
give them. Saying, I know it is disappointing and we dont like
seeing you sad, but although it doesnt seem like it, this is temporary. Encourage children, but let them feel their feelings.
So what do we do as parents to shield our kids from all of the
angst and worry? Well, to be honest, we cannot keep them in a
bubble or shield them from everything. But, we can be there to
hold their hand, give them a hug and listen.

You wont know what youve been missing

until you get it back!

The 3
elements
of fitness
By Heather LaFond

ot everyone recognizes the three different types of exercise:

cardio (also known as cardio-respiratory), strength training and flexibility training. In order to have a well-rounded
fitness routine, it is important to incorporate all three methods of
exercise into your fitness program.

strength and flexibility training is often

more difficult for individuals to add to their
routines, possibly due to intimidation or lack
of knowledge.

Cardio-respiratory

No matter our goal, strength training is an essential component of

our exercise regime. Weight training allows us to keep up our vigor
and endurance as we age, increase our metabolism, and allow us to
lose weight. As we age, our muscle mass declines. In order to keep up
our strength, weight training is critical. However, it is due to a lot of
misconceptions in regard to strength training that individuals tend to
overlook its importance.
The most common fear involves weight loss and weight training. When it comes to weight loss, strength training is your friend!
It will not only help to tighten and tone your body, but incorporating weights into your routine will turn you into a calorie-burning
machine. Muscle is an active tissue; the more you have, the more
calories you burn!
Another myth often encountered when working with clients in
the fitness industry is that lifting weights will make a person appear
bulky. Participating in a regular exercise routine involving strength
training will not make you look like a bodybuilder. This is especially
true if you are female. A females body simply does not have enough
testosterone to build a lot of muscle quickly.

Cardio-respiratory exercise works both your heart and lungs. Our

heart is a muscle, and just like any other muscle in our body, it needs
to be exercised on a regular basis. When our heart is strong, it is better
able to pump blood through our body. Blood transports oxygen from
our lungs to active tissues and organs. Doing cardio-respiratory exercise on a regular basis makes our bodies more efficient both during
exercise and at rest.
In addition to making our heart and lungs strong, cardio-respiratory exercise has several added health benefits. Individuals who
participate in a regular exercise routine with some component of
cardio tend to experience a lower resting heart rate, lower cholesterol
and lower blood pressure; have a lowered sense of stress and tend to
sleep better.
In my experience, most people find cardio to be the easiest form
of exercise to incorporate into their daily routine. On the other hand,

Dream it. Believe it. Achieve it!

Strength

Flexibility

The remaining type of exercise, flexibility, is one of the most

commonly overlooked, but it can be the key component to the
prolonged existence of an active lifestyle. Flexibility is the ability to
freely move a joint through its entire range of motion without experiencing pain. It enhances joint function; when we are able to move
a joint through its entire range of motion, our body is better able to
perform the activities of daily life with ease. Flexibility also enhances
athletic performance and allows athletes to develop strong, balanced
muscles.
Individuals who do not stretch following physical activity lose some
www.naturespathways.com

of the benefits of working out. When strength training is performed,

small tears are formed in muscle tissue. If you do not stretch to release
some of the tension that occurs in the body following this type of
exercise, your body will become less mobile. Flexibility training helps
to ease some of the delayed on-set muscle soreness (DOMS) experienced in the days following strength training. Flexibility training
can also help to reduce some of the soreness experienced following
prolonged or endurance cardio activities.
An important thing to keep in mind when it comes to flexibility
training is to never stretch a cold muscle! The best time to stretch
is immediately after exercising. Before exercise, our body is not
prepared to stretch and doing so may lead to injury. The best way
to warm up before exercise is through dynamic movements that are
similar to the activity that you are about to perform not stretching.
Individuals have the tendency to prefer one type of exercise over
the others. Even so, it is important to incorporate cardio, strength and
flexibility into your exercise routine for the best results. As always,
consult your physician prior to exercise to be sure that it is safe for
you to be physically active. Dont be afraid to consult a certified fitness
professional to assist you with achieving your health and fitness goals!
Be strong. Be healthy. Be a goal getter!

Freedom
from birth
myths
By Mary E. Smits, CD, CBE

very day, labor and birth myths

are being perpetrated by family,
co-workers and even care providers.
Many say, In the end, why does it matter,
as long as the baby is healthy? Ask a
woman with continuing birth trauma that
stems from believing the myths and shell
likely say, It does matter!
A friend: Your due date was yesterday,
wasnt it? For the safety of your baby, you
should schedule an induction.
Your doctor: Your baby is too big for
your pelvis. You are unable to birth vaginally and will need a C-section.
How many pregnant mothers have
heard these or similar unsubstantiated
statements? How many parents have made
choices regarding the birth of their child
based on unproven information? How
many have birth trauma and regret ever
believing these labor and birth myths?

Myth No. 1

If a woman does not birth by 40 weeks

gestation, she is overdue. For her babys
safety, she needs to be induced.

Truth

Forty-one weeks, not 40, is the median length

of pregnancy in healthy first-time mothers.
This means half of such pregnancies will
last longer than 41 weeks, according to a
study that appeared in the journal Obstetrics and Gynecology. The American College
24

Natures Pathways | July 2014

Forty-one weeks, not 40, is the

median length of pregnancy in
healthy first-time mothers. This
means half of such pregnancies
will last longer than 41 weeks...
of Obstetricians and Gynecologists does
not recommend interfering with a normal
pregnancy before 42 completed weeks, and
defines post-term pregnancy as a pregnancy
that has extended beyond 42 weeks.

Why does the truth matter?

According to the Coalition for Improving Maternity Services, first-time mothers

have approximately twice the likelihood
of a caesarean section with induction
compared with natural onset of labor.
Induction agents can cause uterine
hyperstimulation (contractions that are too
long, too strong and too close together with
higher baseline muscle tension). Hyperstimulation is associated with negative
effects on fetal status, including significant
oxygen desaturation and nonreassuring

fetal heart tones, according to an article

that appeared in the American Journal of
Obstetrics & Gynecology.
Elective inductions lead to an increase
in preterm births, a 2007 National Vital
Statistics report showed.

Myth No. 2

A doctor knows before a woman labors

whether her baby is too big and her pelvis
is too small to deliver vaginally.

Truth

In most healthy women with no past injury

or malformation of the pelvis, until labor is
tried, there is no way to know that a baby
is too big.
Neither a womans pelvis nor a babys
head are made of fixed bone structure.
www.naturespathways.com

During pregnancy, a hormone called

relaxin softens the ligaments and cartilage
around the pelvic structure. This allows the
pelvis to move and open freely. A babys
head has five plates connected by soft
tissue. The plates overlap as the babys head
molds during labor. Along with the movements of the mother, this design facilitates
the babys ability to move through the
pelvis. Using the squatting position during
labor opens the pelvis by 28 percent, 1
centimeter side to side and 2 centimeters
front to back, according to two reports
published in the British Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology.

Why does the truth matter?

Some care providers use unsubstantiated factors to convince women that their
babies are too big and to undergo unnecessary cesareans. This leaves mothers open
to complications including infection,
anesthetic complications, hysterectomy,
chronic pelvic pain, amniotic fluid embolism and maternal death, just to name a
few. Suspected large babies born by cesarean are open to preterm birth, respiratory
distress, pulmonary hypertension, death
and difficulty breastfeeding, and are more
likely to develop asthma, diabetes, allergic
rhinitis, food allergies and obesity, according to the online magazine Fit Pregnancy.
The U.S. C-section rate has now reached
32.8 percent, according to a 2012 National
Vital Statistics report, and the World
Health Organization states, anytime
a countrys caesarean section rate rises
above 15 percent, the dangers of C-section
surgery outweigh the life-saving benefits it
is supposed to provide. A study published
in the journal Nursing Research has
confirmed that straying from evidencebased maternity care results in more birthrelated trauma, including post-traumatic
stress disorder.
Studies of women diagnosed with an
inadequate pelvis have shown that 67 to
80 percent go on to have a vaginal birth,
articles in both American Journal of
Obstetrics & Gynecology and the journal
Family Medicine reported.

Thinking
outside the
cubicle
By Lisa Jermain

t isnt just that people complain about Mondays. More heart

attacks and strokes happen on Mondays than any other day of
the week. Stress and anxiety skyrocket as people return to jobs
that arent fulfilling. George Carlin said that most people work just
hard enough not to get fired and make just enough money not to
quit. Thats cubicle thinking. We are boxed in by circumstances and
cant make a change. According to a poll by the research firm Decipher, 67 percent of Americans think about quitting their job daily
and 72 percent would rather work for themselves. But, most never
do it. They tell themselves that becoming an entrepreneur is too
risky or requires too much of an upfront investment, or that they
just dont have the skillset to run a business. Our doubts limit us.
Having been a part of corporate America, I understand cubicle
life. You work hard, striving for a tiny annual raise if you are lucky.
And, forget about taking time off or working part time for a while
to focus on raising a family. You immediately get off track, even in
the most progressive of companies. As renowned author Steven
Covey stated, it doesnt matter how fast or high you climb the
ladder if it is leaning against the wrong wall.
Enter network marketing. In the age of social media and
connectedness, it is the distribution model that makes sense.
Since people buy from people they know and trust, why wouldnt
companies reward for word-of-mouth advertising? They can pay
you rather than middle men, retailers and ad agencies. Business
moguls like Bill Gates, Warren Buffett and Donald Trump are
investing in network marketing companies because they comprise
a $167 billion worldwide industry that has grown 91 percent over
the last decade.
Ill admit, I was hugely skeptical and know people who had
mediocre experiences. Over the years, however, network marketing companies have gotten smarter, redesigned compensation
26

Natures Pathways | July 2014

plans and developed some great product lines. So good, in fact,

that of Americans today use products from a network marketing company. The naysayers are those who think it is a glorified
lottery ticket. No one that is successful in network marketing has
had it handed to them. But, if you are willing to work and treat
it like a profession, the rewards can be significant and dont have
limits like most corporate jobs. We like to say that if you treat it
as a hobby, you will make a hobby income. If you treat it like a
profession, you can make a professional income. The other beautiful thing is that either choice is absolutely good. It is a choice.
I also love the fact that it is an industry where we rise by helping
others succeed and reach their goals. No jockeying for position or
worrying about who gets credit for the idea that saves the company
money. In his book, The Business of the 21st Century, business magnate Robert Kiyosaki said, I came to realize that while
personal success is fulfilling, it is much more fulfilling when you
can help others create their own success as well. In my case, what
I call work is helping people achieve amazing health and be able
to dream again. I love that my office is mobile and changes lives.
You can be there for your kids or aging parents. You can work
your own schedule and enjoy summer with your family. You can
work hard and benefit your family, not corporate shareholders.
You can live a life of passion and contribution. If you are ready to
design your life on your terms, go for it. There has never been a
better time.

Burns and blisters

Mouth ulcers
Chemotherapy treatment drugs have many
side effects, including the lowering of white
blood cell counts. If this occurs, the patient
may develop a fever, which can be a sign
of infection. Signs to watch for on the skin
tissue include:
Sores in the mouth or mouth ulcers
Sores around the rectum
Swelling and redness around the
infused port of administration
It seems the medical field has not addressed
the serious problem of painful burning skin
tissue and sores caused by such invasive
treatment. Lets explore some of the healing
properties that God provides through our
Mother Earth.
SWEET ALMOND OIL: excellent for
all skin types. It is an emollient known to
soften, recondition and soothe the skin. It is
rich in fatty acids.
APRICOT KERNEL OIL: similar to
sweet almond oil, it helps to address sensitive and prematurely aging skin. It is rich in

scent and color and may be used liberally.

SUNFLOWER OIL: contains naturally
occurring high amounts of vitamins A, D
and E. It also is rich in unsaturated fatty
acids. It nourishes and conditions dry,
weathered, aged and damaged skin.
AVOCADO OIL: contains naturally
occurring high amounts of vitamins A, B1,
B2, D and E. This oil is also rich in amino
acids, lecithin and other essential fatty
acids. Its recommended for sensitive and
easily irritated skin.
Garcinia tree: produces a butter that
offers rapid cellular renewal. It is known
to regenerate worn skin cells and support
elasticity.
LAVENDER: renowned for centuries for
its healing and calming properties; it is a
natural antiseptic.
ROSEMARY: offers many naturally occurring benefits, including antioxidants, restorative properties, analgesic (pain reliever)
properties and blood circulation stimulation.

The benefits of natural

treatment: A testimony
September 20, 2011

Dear Julie,
When my husband and I saw you at your
place of work it was the best reunion I could
have asked for!
As you could see with your own eyes, my
mouth (inside and out) was full of mouth
sores.
You gave me a big hug with understanding I was going through yet another series of
chemo treatments. The chemo gave me the
mouth sores and I absolutely could not get
rid of them.
You told me you had something for me
to try, a balm you had patented. You said
I could use it inside of my mouth as well. I
couldnt wait to get home to try it.
I was extremely pleased with the results
by late that same night, and within 4 to 5
days you would not have known I had a
mouth full of sores. It had healed the sores
inside and out!
I just want you to know that I will forever
be THANKFUL AND GRATEFUL to you
for even offering this balm to me. Its the best
thing I have ever used and I wouldnt hesitate to recommend it to everyone!
Thank you for such a great contribution

to individuals who have such problems from

their chemo and cancer treatments.
Truly yours,

Anytime
account
access for
summer ease
By Alan M. Zierler

t seems like winter just didnt want to let go this year, with
snow, frost and cooler temperatures all the way into May.
As a result, vacations are expected to be on the increase this
summer. In April, the Wall Street Journal reported that airlines
and online travel agencies had already booked 25-35 percent of
tickets for travel during the summer months. USA Today said that
Airlines For America, an airline trade group, expected roughly 210
million fliers to book and fly on U.S. airlines this summer season.
Whether youre planning to stay close to home or travel afar this
year, youll likely want easy access to your credit union or bank
accounts to pay for purchases, withdraw cash, pay bills and simply
track your accounts. Chances are your financial institution offers
a variety of convenient electronic tools to help you get the money
you need and also manage your accounts almost anywhere and
anytime. Here are some of the more common on-the-go account
access options:
ONLINE BANKING: From the comfort of your home to locations worldwide, most financial institutions offer some level of
account access via their websites. Usually you just log on and enter
your password or go through an authorization process to view
your balances, transfer funds, pay your bills and more.
MOBILE BANKING: Similar to online banking, mobile
banking allows you to do your banking via your smartphone.
You can either go directly to your financials website and log in,
or many financials offer a free downloadable app that makes it
quicker and more convenient.
PHONE BANKING: This electronic service has been around
a long time, accessing your account by calling in and either using
voice activation or the buttons on your phone to check balances
and conduct transactions.
30

Natures Pathways | July 2014

ATM/DEBIT CARDS: There are two basic types of cards

you can use to access your funds at Automated Teller Machines
(ATMs) or to purchase items directly at the checkout of retail
stores and other merchants. ATM-only cards are usually associated with a savings account and limited to ATM use. ATM/debit
cards are linked directly to your checking account and allow you
to withdraw funds at an ATM and a variety of vendors. Funds
may be withdrawn almost immediately when using either of these
cards, so be sure to deduct purchases and withdrawals from your
savings or checking account balance right away.
PREPAID TRAVEL MONEY CARDS: A convenient upgrade
from now-defunct paper travelers checks, travel money cards are
a lower-risk debit card option. Unlike an ATM/debit card that is
linked to your checking account, you determine how much you
would like to prepay on the card ahead of time, and they are usually
reloadable. If your travel money card is lost or stolen, you dont
have to worry about your checking account being compromised.
Most financials charge a nominal fee when you purchase or reload
travel money cards, but its a small price to pay for the added security and convenience of paying as you go while on vacation.
ATM NETWORKS: If your credit union or bank belongs to
a broader ATM network, youll enjoy the added convenience of
withdrawing funds from a large number of network member
www.naturespathways.com

ATMs, state or nationwide.

TEXT ALERTS: Many financial institutions feature text or
email alerts with the option to have messages sent to your phone
or email address. Alerts can usually be set up to notify you in case
of low account balances, withdrawals made and a variety of other
situations.
CREDIT CARDS: When vacationing, especially to another state
or outside the country, paying with a credit card instead of a debit
card is a good option. Instead of withdrawing funds from your
checking account like an ATM/debit card, credit card purchases
work more like a loan; you charge the amount to the credit card
company and are sent a monthly bill for balances. If fraud occurs
on your account, you can contact your credit card provider so they
can investigate and stop accepting charges.

Golfing for good

22nd Annual Larry Wolfinger
Charity Golf Outing set for July 26
By Kathi Bloy

ne small idea often leads to tremendous undertakings.

As Karla Wolfinger said about the sudden death of her
husband, Larry, God took one person to save many
others. When Larry died of a massive heart attack at age 54, Karla
wanted to memorialize him in a way that would help others.
Since he golfed regularly at Countryside Golf Club in Kaukauna,
she and Larrys friends decided to hold a golf outing there in his
honor and give the proceeds to charity. The annual events stated
purpose is to help a memory live on by helping others less
fortunate.

The event is
always at Countryside, Wolfinger
said, because thats
where Larry golfed.
He was in the water pump business and he did work for Tom at
Countryside, too. Toms been very good to us, and donates some of
the golfing fees back to Larrys memorial charity fund.

Making a difference in the lives of many

The original event in 1992 helped buy a glass eye for the daughter
of one of the Wolfingers friends. Since then, the Larry Wolfinger Charity Golf Outing has helped more than 35 individuals and
families struggling through a medical crisis, according to Heidi
Frederickson, daughter of the Wolfingers and executive director
of Community Benefit Tree (CBT), a nonprofit that grew out of
the golf outing.
In its early years, the golf outing committee encouraged those in
need to apply for funds from the event. As applicants multiplied,
Frederickson said, at times we had so many we had to turn them
down. They would ask us how we did the golf outing and how they
could do a similar event. After 12 years of serving the community through the golf outing, we recognized the need to help more
families. The Community Benefit Tree was planted.
The nonprofit marked its 10th anniversary on June 10 this year.
Heidi had this vision that instead of helping people just once a
year, wed do it throughout the year, because there is such a great
need, Wolfinger said.
Frederickson said, Last year, for the first time, the proceeds of
the golf outing went to Community Benefit Tree, so we can help
many people instead of just one.
CBT has helped more than 500 families in its 10 years of existence. Proceeds from the Larry Wolfinger Charity Golf Outing
extend the organizations reach.

An event like no other

The golf outing is open to the public and includes fun on the course,
such as a hole sponsored by Culvers, where golfers tee off from an
ice cream cone. Other business-sponsored holes involve games or
www.naturespathways.com

contests with prizes, or simply

provide a treat or a snack.
This is a perfect opportunity, Frederickson said, for
a business to make one-onone contact with 250-300
prospective customers.
One participant of the
golf outing last year said, It
has nothing to do with the golf. Its for the benefit and the fun
involved. Thats why were here.
Wolfinger said, Our trophy is a mounted corn cob pipe, because
Larry always smoked one.
Frederickson added, If we have enough womens teams, we have
a trophy thats a golf ball decorated with rhinestones. But you dont
have to be a golfer to participate. The fun this year will include a
silent auction, a raffle, a live auction, a bake sale, food and games
for adults to win prizes. Theres something for everyone, including
a costume contest for golfers.
Those wishing to honor their own loved ones while making a
difference for someone else can participate in a memory walk.
Frederickson said, For $50, people can send us their loved ones
picture. Well put it on a cardboard golf ball about 12 inches in
diameter to line the path to the clubhouse, acknowledging these
lost loved ones at the event.
The 22nd Larry Wolfinger Charity Golf Outing will take place
July 26. Its always the last Saturday of July, Frederickson said, no
matter how many Saturdays are in the month.

How to participate

For more information about the golf outing and Community

Benefit Tree, go to www.communitybenefittree.org and click on
CBT Events or contact CBT at 920-422-1919. Golfers can also
register a team and request specific tee times on the website.
Frederickson added, If you are interested in making a taxdeductible donation, please contact us by phone. We will be happy
to pick up any donations at your convenience.
Community Benefit Tree, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, celebrates peoples
lives and supports them during medical crises. They help families, friends and
co-workers plan Celebration of Support events for their loved ones and provide
education, support, resources and financial assistance for families struggling with
medical crises. CBT has assisted with more than 500 Celebration of Support
events in the last ten years. For more information, visit communitybenefittree.org

Parenting
a teenager?
Some helpful
tools
By Jacqueline Anderson

feel blessed. I get to use my professional counseling license

to live my passion working with teenagers every day. Parents
typically find me by word of mouth after becoming frustrated
enough to seek out a therapist who specializes in teenage issues.
The first thing I always notice when meeting new families is
how much parents love their teenagers. I know its love because
nothing makes parents more frustrated in understanding, parenting, setting boundaries, relating to and communicating with their
teenager.
Frustration is completely normal and common. Frustration
does not make one a bad parent, nor does it mean your teenager
is a screwed up kid; it likely means a lack of parenting ideas. Just
when parents get in a great parenting groove, their skills are tested
when the teen years approach. Frustrated parents of teens typically need new tools for their parenting toolbox a different set
of skills to master.
To get you started, here are a few quick and helpful tools for
your toolbox when it comes to parenting your teenager.

View your teen as an adult in training

rather than an adolescent

Kids ages 12 to 24 are biologically wired to begin separating

from their parents, developing autonomy and establishing
independence. This biological developmental stage needs to
happen as teens are literally training for adulthood.
Switching your perspective helps switch your behavior and
reactions. This simple shift in perspective will help you
respond more appropriately and less authoritatively.
Teenagers still need adult support and guidance; they are not
biologically ready to take on the world, but they are biologically ready to establish interdependence under your tutelage.

34

Natures Pathways | July 2014

Frustrated parents of
teens typically need new
tools for their parenting
toolbox a different set
of skills to master.
Instead of asking, How do I stop this
behavior? Ask, How can I help my teen?

Let go of trying to control your teens actions, behaviors and

belief system. When your teen is saying they dont want to
talk about it, instead of demanding to have an immediate
conversation, ask them, When would be a good time to talk
about this? That implies a conversation needs to happen, but
also allows them to have some control over when it occurs.
If your teen just made a poor decision and/or was caught
in a lie, instead of lecturing and shaming, consider saying,
This is a learning opportunity for you; because you are a
good person, I know you must be feeling badly about your
poor decision. I am proud of you for owning it and accepting
www.naturespathways.com

your consequences even though it is hard. This statement

expresses pride, empathy and clarifies you see the decision as
an error, not your teen.

Less is more when communicating with

your teen

Less talking, questioning, lecturing, controlling and managing will give your teen the space and opportunity to initiate
conversation with you, once again allowing them to feel in
control, less pressure and more autonomy. Teens certainly
need expectations and guidelines; consider giving them the
opportunity to be a part of creating the expectations and
guidelines they will be required to follow. This will help teach
them responsibility, accountability, problem solving and negotiation skills. It will also give them a sense of personal investment in their life.
Expectations and guidelines will likely be violated from time
to time. Your response to violations is imperative. Aim for
a 70-30 split: 70 percent of the time, you are calm, firm and
consistent in your responses and 30 percent of the time, you
freak out or overreact. Have a discussion with your teen
(where you listen more and talk less), allow them an opportunity to experience the natural consequences of their actions
and if possible, to positively resolve/reconcile the situation
themselves.

These new parenting skills take time, persistence and practice to

master. You are in a learning process, so be patient with yourself. As
parents, we all make mistakes from time to time. When you do, the
importance is not on guilt or shame. The importance is on being
mindful of making the mistake. Take accountability and talk about
it with your teen, then aim to do better next time. Remember, we
have to make mistakes in order to learn. We need to know what it
feels like to do something wrong so we can make it right.

Healthy in
spirit: Living
your passion
By Rev. April Kain-Breese

o you have a healthy passion in life, something that

inspires or thrills you so much that you want to do it all
the time? It might be your career, an avocation, or even
being in a particular location such as the northwoods. It might be
your family life, your spiritual practice or gardening. Finding your
passion and then living from it is the essence of a life well-lived!
For many years, I was a professional librarian in higher education, and I loved that career. But along the way, I began to move
in another direction. It started with a relatively quick decision
to attend a week of spiritual enrichment classes in another state.
Well, I loved it so much that I signed up immediately for the next
opportunity, and I continued to take classes until I completed the
program and was licensed to conduct services, marriages, funerals and christenings! Within three years, I had completed that
program, and I loved every minute of it.
Nearly 10 years passed before I moved to the next level; in fact,
I had begun to wonder if my path had come to an end. But then
I was amazed when just the right opening appeared, quite unexpectedly, and I was off again. Eventually, I was able to do my work
full time, participate in a special seminary program that allowed

me to stay in my home church, and I was recently ordained. I am

living my passion every day!
If you know what your passion is, now is the perfect time to
take at least one step in the direction of your dreams. You may
have thought about it for years, or it may be something new that
has come to the surface for you. I invite you to step into your
dream and see what happens next. I have a bookmark from Mary
Morrissey, noted author, speaker and coach, that says, Walk to
the edge of the light you see. Thats how you can move forward
with your dream. Imagine you are walking down a dark country
road at night. You know your destination is up ahead, but you cant
see it. All you can do is hold your flashlight out so it illuminates
your next few steps, and the next few, and the next, until there it
is; youve arrived!
Some of us know what our passion is, while others are still
looking for it. If you are searching for your passion, ask yourself

Are you making

these common
juicing mistakes?
By Kim Neher, MS, Clinical Nutritionist

hen it comes down to your

nutrition, we are all learning in
this big bad world of processed
foods that juicing is definitely better than
not juicing at all, but try to avoid these
common mistakes!

Top common juicing

mistakes

Drinking green juice on a full stomach:

Fresh juice should only be consumed on an
empty stomach to avoid gastric upset like
heartburn. Drinking juice on an empty

stomach
allows the vitamins and minerals
in the juice to go straight to
your bloodstream. Having fiber or a meal
already in your stomach prevents your
body from quickly absorbing the nutrients from the juice. Wait at least two hours
after a meal to drink a green juice, and wait
20 minutes after drinking a green juice to
consume a meal.
Waiting too long to drink your
green juice: As soon as your freshly

made green juice gets exposed to air, its live

enzymes begin to degrade, decreasing the
nutritional content. The live enzymes of a
fresh juice give you immediate energy, so
always consume the juice fresh and within
15 minutes of making it. If youre not able to
drink your juice right away, always keep it in
the fridge or a cooler, especially if traveling.
Using too many sweet fruits and

vegetables in your green juice: Sweet
fruits and vegetables like watermelon,
apples, pears and carrots are very nutritious when consumed whole, but if you
consume too many of them juiced, the
amount of sugar and fructose you are
adding to your diet could be over the top.
If a juice has too much natural sugar it can
affect insulin levels pretty dramatically,
causing cravings and weight gain. This
is why I recommend keeping the sugary
fruits and vegetables in your green juice to
a maximum of one per serving.
Treating green juice like a meal
(unless youre on a fast or having it
as a snack): Juice isnt a meal replacement, it is a meal enhancer or snack. Its
really hard to eat the amount of vegetables

www.naturespathways.com

recommended by most experts (six to

eight servings) in a typical day. Rarely will
Americans eat vegetables for breakfast,
and at lunch a typical vegetable serving
could be as small as a piece of lettuce or
tomato on a sandwich, so juicing makes it
more probable that your target amount of
vegetable servings for the day will be met.
Not chewing your green juice: Juice
(and smoothies) are food and should be
chewed. Its important to swish around the
juice in your mouth or move your jaw up
and down for a couple of seconds before
swallowing it to release saliva that contains
important digestive enzymes. The digestive enzymes are crucial in delivering key
nutrients to your cells.
Juicing spinach or kale over and over

again: Variety is the spice of life, and its key

for juicing correctly and safely and to avoid
hormonal issues. Remember to rotate the
greens (kale, chard, spinach, mustard greens,
collards, dandelion, arugula, etc.) in your
juice each week to prevent build up of oxalic
acid (which can affect the thyroid gland) and
provide a balanced amount of different vitamins and minerals for your body.
Do you know someone who might be
making these common juicing mistakes?
Please share these guidelines with them.
Summer is a great time to start juicing, and
we want everyone to reap all the benefits!

Solving some
problems of
the biped
By Joette Wheeler

ntil I decided to mow my lawn in sandals on an extremely

hot day, I had not considered foot care as a service I
needed. I did succeed in leaving the front lawn with a
fresh trim, however, I also left one of my big toenails as well. That
began my search for foot care.
My initial thoughts were to have the remainder of the nail
clipped, have my feet cleaned with the nails polished, hide my
injury and return to wearing sandals. Not a good idea! I received a
number of pedicures and chose a dark polish to cover the offending toe. The results were foot fungus and three unsightly toenails.
Sandals, I decided, were no longer an option. I learned later from
a foot care hygienist that the haphazard way I dried my feet after
showering and using dark polish encouraged a climate for fungus
to grow. I did also speculate that some of my problems might have
been attributed to the pedicures I purchased.
My luck took a turn for the better when I answered an ad for
the services of a foot care hygienist who had come to Wisconsin
from Quebec. I did have a conversation with my family doctor

who described an injection for foot fungus. I opted not to have the
injection, as it could have affected the functioning of my liver. I
did choose to follow up for an evaluation and services from a local
foot care hygienist.
The services I received worked! And I proceeded to refer several
people close to me to this hygienist: My 17-year-old grandson
who had recurring ingrown toenails; my 33-year-old son who was
having challenges with his feet due to the need for steel-toe boots; a
60-plus-year-old friend and her 85-year-old mother; and a daughter-in-law with perfect feet who simply wanted the relaxation and
pampering the hygienist had time to do. This list demonstrates the
variety of ages of folks who can appreciate foot care.
I have since learned how to avoid problems with my feet (besides
not mowing the lawn in sandals!). I regularly schedule appointments every eight to 10 weeks. I receive ongoing education and
encouragement in regard to foot care. I use only recommended
foot lotion to reduce the dryness of my feet and I keep fungus
serum handy in case I have a return of this unsightly problem.

I appreciate seeing my 60-plus-year-old feet looking and feeling
as though they are in their 40s and I confidently wear sandals in
public!
In regard to foot care hygienists, our neighbor to the north,
Quebec, Canada, has a resource which we in the state of Wisconsin have been lacking. That resource is foot care hygienist services.
Much like dental hygienists who assist dentists in the United
States, foot care hygienists in Quebec assist podiatrists (see www.
actionsportphysio.com/en/main-nav/services/other/foot-care/).
In Quebec, the work a the podiatrist may not be able to spend
time doing is referred to a trained foot care hygienist. Such work
would include but would not be limited to the following: evaluating the health of the feet; providing specific care to diabetics, when
applicable; providing skin care, including the reduction of cores,
calluses, etc.; providing nail care on apparent fungus mycosis,
thick nails, etc.; explaining how to prevent problems; offering
education; and offering massage and paraffin treatment.
In my realm of experience, many of us need more foot care
than can be provided by a pedicurist, yet not as much foot care
as would require the skill of a podiatrist. There are some foot care
services in this area which are provided by registered nurses and
these services are highly utilized. The time allotment, therefore, is
limited. In contrast to that, the foot care hygienist provides over an
hour of individualized services.
I have heard my foot care hygienist describe her services as being
quite different from those provided by a pedicurist. Specifically, the
goal of a pedicure is primarily cosmetic to make the feet look
more attractive. The goal of the foot care hygienist is improvement
in both the appearance of the feet and their functionality.
Although foot care hygienists provide services such as callous
removal, they are not categorized as being within the medical
community at least not yet.
Quebec is no longer the only place where a valuable foot care
resource is kept. Wisconsin too has this resource for those of us
who would like to improve our ability to walk comfortably and to
look good while doing it!
The above article was written by Joette Wheeler, a retired community support
worker for Outagamie County Department of Human Services and a client of
Heavenly Foot Care LLC. It is in reference to the services of a foot care hygienist Suzie Bellavance, owner of Heavenly Foot Care LLC in Appleton. Suzie is a
Quebecoise who has lived in the State of Wisconsin for five years. She attended
one of Quebecs specialized schools near Montreal, Cavan. For nine years, she
has provided foot care in both Quebec and in the United States. She is located on
the east side of Appleton, where her services are offered in the privacy of a home
office. She is passionate about working with the elderly and others who want to
make foot care part of a healthier lifestyle.

The many
benefits of
yoga

n its 2012 Yoga in America study, Yoga

Journal found that more than 20 million
Americans practiced yoga, a nearly 30
percent increase from 2008, when the magazine conducted its previous study. Among
the millions of yoga practitioners surveyed,
roughly 82 percent were women. While those
statistics figure to change as more and more
people, men and women alike, turn to yoga,
its clear that women, at least in the western
hemisphere, are blazing the yoga trail.
Many women turn to yoga because they
recognize the value of strength training but
are uncomfortable or nervous about lifting
weights. The various poses performed in
yoga can increase muscle strength and tone,
providing similar benefits to weightlifting
without forcing women to spend time among
men in the weight room. But yoga does more
than improve strength and muscle tone. The
following are a few additional benefits of
yoga, some of which may surprise even the
most devoted of practitioners.

their bodies simply arent flexible enough

to perform many of the poses typical of the
average yoga class. While beginners may
find the poses difficult, they are designed to
safely stretch muscles. Over time, the poses
may release lactic acid that builds up in
muscles, and that lactic acid often contributes to fatigue, pain, stiffness, and tension.
This release leads to improved flexibility,
and like many physical activities, yoga poses
become easier to perform as practitioners
bodies become more accustomed to them.

IMPROVED FLEXIBILITY: Some people

IMPROVED POSTURE: The stronger,

INCREASED RANGE OF MOTION: Joint

pain does not discriminate based on age or

gender, and many sufferers of joint pain find
it debilitating at times and at least mildly
painful most of the time. But yoga can
improve lubrication in the joints, increasing ones range of motion as a result. That
makes it easier for some people to live with
joint pain, which may even subside among
practitioners who fully commit to yoga.

also contributes to better posture. Many

yoga poses rely on the deep abdominal
muscles to help maintain each pose, and
this strengthens the bodys core. A stronger
core increases the likelihood that a person
will stand straight and tall, an improvement in posture that many nonpractitioners would enthusiastically embrace.
REDUCED STRESS LEVELS: Yoga prac-

titioners often tout the effect that yogahas

on their stress levels. Certain styles of yoga
employ deep breathing techniques that
force the mind to focus on breathing, and
that focus has a calming effect, reducing
stress as a result. Other yoga styles may
employ meditative practices that aim to
clear the mind of distractions that contribute to stress. Novices may be skeptical and
question the efficacy of such techniques, but
long-time practitioners of yoga find its effect
on stress levels to be a hidden benefit of the
practice. In addition, research has suggested
that yoga may result in an increase of
hormones associated with relaxation.
HEART HEALTH: People with a personal

or family history of heart disease may

be surprised to learn that yoga has been
shown to have a positive effect on those
dealing with heart disease. Yoga slows the
rate at which the heart beats, which helps
alleviate high blood pressure and helps
those people with heart disease and lowers
their risk of stroke. Yoga also has been
linked to lower cholesterol and a healthier
immune system.

The

American
dream:
15 years

Sai Ram brings

Indian cuisine and culture
to northeast Wisconsin
By Grace Olson and Rebecca Bentz

An experienced and
passionate chef, Krishna

Chalasane founded Sai Ram Indian Cuisine on

a basic goal: to provide his customers exceptional Indian food and friendly service. Using
this principle as their beacon, he and his family
have been running their award-winning restaurant with the same ideals for over a decade.
As owner and head chef, Krishnas pride is
in his 25 years of restaurant experience and the
longstanding, authentic family recipes that make
up Sai Rams vast menu. The food is delicious,
flavorful and healthy, but Sai Ram is about even
more than that: the restaurant brings families
together including the Chalasanes.

A family endeavor
Krishna and Kumari Chalasane emigrated from
India to America in the late 1990s, intent on
achieving the American dream and providing

the best future for their two sons, Neehar and

Shavan. After moving from Michigan to Appleton upon a friends recommendation, the motivated couple gathered their lifesavings and
with the generous help of family friends, in
July 1999, they started one of the areas most
unique and high-quality family-run businesses.
Sai Ram began as a lunch buffet and dinner
menu restaurant. But when customers started
gravitating toward healthier eating options in
2011, Sai Ram underwent a big transformation
one that would make it the much-talkedabout destination it is today.
In October 2011, the remodeling process
began. With the removal of the buffet, the
restaurant was able to focus on higher-end
products and on creating each dish from
scratch: no shortcuts. Krishna recreated his
entire menu, rejuvenating Sai Rams cuisine
and adding a wide array of vegan and vegetarian entrees. His efforts paid off in the

restaurants consistently high-quality, healthminded dishes. You wont find monosodium

glutamate (MSG) or pre-prepared ingredients in
any Sai Ram dishes. What you will encounter
at the restaurant is a talented kitchen team,
led by Krishna, that knows the very best way
to blend spices for both Indian and American
palates.
Also in 2011, eldest son Neehar realized his
lifelong dream of working with his parents full
time at Sai Ram, joining the team as general
manager. He and younger brother Shavan,
who is also an important component to the
business, retrained Sai Rams server team,
providing them full menu knowledge and
preparing them for a new, healthier Sai Ram.
The Chalasane family took care to examine
every detail of customers dining experience.
When individuals enter Sai Ram today, theyre
greeted with the enthralling smell of aromatic
homemade spices, a passionate serving and
kitchen team, healthy and delicious food, and
the knowledge that the Chalasane family truly
cares about each customers experience.

Caring customers
While a strong family foundation is a large
part of Sai Rams success, the Chalasane
family also recognizes the major role played
by their customers, who have been supporting the restaurant since the day it opened.
The family takes pride in the fact that their
food brings other families together.
The Chalasanes dont want Sai Ram to be
known as simply another restaurant, and its
safe to say it wont be. Everyone who visits
this family-run eatery walks away having
enjoyed a delicious meal and an experience
they wont soon forget.

A first-time Sai Ram customers experience

Before trying it for the first time, I admit I had a misconception about Indian food. I thought
it was hot, spicy and probably difficult for the average eater like me to consume. But after
one visit to Sai Ram Indian Cuisine I realized I was very wrong, and I am so happy I decided
to check it out.
My friends and I wanted to experience Indian food for the first time together, and Im glad
we chose Sai Ram. It is the perfect well-cared-for, casual restaurant for an evening out. When
you enter, all of your senses are immediately heightened. Theres an array of rich colors:
deep reds, yellows and oranges with splashes of gold that fill the restaurant. The aromas
wafting around the dining room are intoxicating, and you can feel the flavor around you as
you peruse the menu. It makes you feel as though youre in for a magnificent, authentic
experience. (Trust me, you are!)
Being vegetarian, Im used to most local restaurants providing vegetarian options as an
alternative to meat-centered dishes. At Sai Ram, you can tell this is not the case; healthy vegan
and vegetarian entrees are a real focus that Krishna, the head chef and owner, takes pride in.
Before my guests and I enjoyed our entrees, we tried the regular and garlic nan. Both
were great and we could tell they were freshly made. I then ordered the vegetarian
dish Navaratan Koorma, mixed vegetables cooked with cottage cheese, cashews, raisins,
coconut, turmeric and fenugreek leaves in a rich sweet sauce. It was perfect! The flavors
balanced wonderfully.
One of the friends joining me is not a vegetarian and had just as many items to choose
from on the menu. She decided on the Chicken Makhani and has been raving about it ever
since. It is a mild sauce with lots of cumin, cloves, cinnamon and coriander. The flavors
melded together flawlessly and the dish was spiced just right.
My other friend chose another customer favorite (theyre highlighted nicely on the
menu!), Dal Makhani. She couldnt resist this vegan special that is spoken so highly of.
Ginger, garlic and tomatoes are paired with yellow, black and red lentils and soaked overnight. I have never seen her so excited about a meal!
The portions were perfectly sized, and we were definitely feeling full, but because
we loved the meal so far, decided to order a dessert to share. We selected Mango Kulfi
because we are all ice cream lovers. This tasted like nothing weve ever had before. It is a
traditional Indian ice cream with almonds and cardamom yum!
Sai Ram Indian Cuisine was able to make three people with very different palates extremely
happy. The vast menu allows vegan, vegetarian and meat-eaters alike to find something to
love and crave at this restaurant. Everything is high-quality, healthy and delicious!

Fun ways to
be a fit family

besity is a global epidemic affecting people of all ages.

According to The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than one-third of Americans are considered
obese. Being overweight or obese has been linked to cardiovascular
disease, diabetes and some forms of cancer, and children who are
overweight are likely to be overweight or obese adults.
While eating a diet that is low in fat and high in whole-grain
fiber, vegetables and lean proteins is important, exercise remains
one of the key factors in maintaining a healthy weight. However,
many adults and children simply do not get enough exercise during
the day. An active lifestyle is often hampered by the prevalence
of digital devices or sedentary jobs that encourage more screen
time than fitness time. But there are ways for the entire family to
get fit. Exercising together is not just a great way for families to
get healthy, but also a great opportunity to spend time together.
The following are a handful of ways families can work together to
incorporate more exercise into their daily lives.
TACKLE CHORES. Yes, tasks around the house can count as

exercise. Working together not only gets you moving but also
cuts down on the time it takes to tackle tasks around the house.
Mowing the lawn, vacuuming the rugs, sweeping the floor
all of these activities can get the heart pumping. Make it fun by
setting chores to music or competing against one another to see
who gets their task done first or the best.
COMPETE IN THE POOL. Swimming is a low-impact activity

that works many muscles in the body. Taking a dip in the pool
can be both relaxing and beneficial to your health. Compete with
family members to make the most of the time spent in the water.
Host relay swimming races, see how long each member of the
family can tread water or create any other competitions that keep
everyone in the pool moving.
CREATE AN OUTDOOR OBSTACLE COURSE. Set up a series

of obstacles in your yard and host your own triathlon. You can
jump through tires, climb through tubes and scale trees. Make it
www.naturespathways.com

fun by having adults try to ride tricycles or pair up an adult with a

child for sack races. The opportunities for fun are only hampered
by your imagination.
GO FOR FAMILY BICYCLE RIDES. Traverse your neighbor-

hood or blaze new trails by riding bikes together. Young children

can be strapped into trailers that are pulled behind the bike or ride
in seats attached to the bike itself. This gives everyone a chance to
enjoy the great outdoors and hone their cycling skills.
GO HIKING. Hiking is another fun family activity that also

happens to make for great exercise. Choose a trail that may not be
level and push everyones endurance to the test.

STROLL THE BEACH. Walking or running on sand offers more

resistance than walking on pavement. Take a stroll at the seaside.

Break up the walk by collecting shells or stopping by the water to
observe marine wildlife.

HIT THE DANCE FLOOR. If youve been invited to a wedding or

a Sweet 16 party, cut a rug and take advantage of the DJ and dance
floor. When enjoying yourselves, you probably wont even realize
how much youre exercising.

Summer hearing
aid care
Stephanie Long, Audiologist

ow that summer is finally here, it is time to think about

how to care for your hearing aids when out enjoying the
pleasant weather. Whether youre out golfing, out on the
boat or simply enjoying your backyard, summer heat and humidity can be a problem for hearing aids. In addition to heat and
humidity, dust or dirt can also be a problem. I spent the last several
hours working in my garden and know firsthand how quickly you
can get dirty and hot!
To be clear, it is important to be able to wear your hearing aids
all of the time. Hearing friends and family while enjoying summer
activities is part of what makes summer fun. In addition, hearing
the birds, crickets, frogs and other sounds of summer is part of
why many people want hearing aids in the first place. Participating
fully in all of these activities without missing out on one laugh, bird
song or conversation is important! So what should you do to keep
your hearing aids in good shape while enjoying these activities?
First of all, most but not all behind-the-ear (BTE) style
hearing aids are now at least moisture resistant. This has been true
for several years. If you are not sure if yours is, consult your audiologist; he or she can tell you quite easily. If you wear an in-the-ear
(ITE) style aid, these are more prone to moisture problems as well.
Unless you have the Siemens Aquarius hearing aid, (which you
really can go swimming with) you should follow some simple

precautions.
For example:
Wear a hat
or use an umbrella when it is raining.
Dry your hair before putting your hearing aids on (if your
hair touches the aids).
Wipe any obvious moisture off your hearing aids with a dry
tissue.
Changing the filters or domes on your aids more often than in
the winter is also appropriate.
Use a dry aid kit, such as Dry and Store, daily.
Do not use hair driers, hot air, ovens, the microwave or
anything else to dry your aids. If you do not have a dry aid kit,
wipe the aid off and open the battery door so it can dry out,
but do not use heat to dry your aid.
Watch for corrosion on the battery. If you notice a white powder
on the battery or battery contacts, replace the battery immediately. The battery contacts can be cleaned with battery contact
cleaner or by gently brushing the corrosion off the contacts.
When at the pool or lake, have a routine place to put your
aids. If swimming or water sports are an important part of
your life, you may want to invest in a small water-tight box,
such as the OtterBox (a brand of boxes). These are relatively

inexpensive; I found them online for less than $12 in a variety

of colors. This small investment is far less expensive than
replacing or even repairing a hearing aid. If you had a box like
this, even if your kayak capsizes or your bag falls overboard,
your hearing aids will be dry.
Remember to avoid your hearing aids when putting sunscreen
on, as sunscreen can clog the tiny microphones and filters on
hearing aids.
If you have a BTE style hearing aid with a tube, remember
to use an earmold blower to blow out any moisture in your
tubing. If you can see bubbles of moisture, get rid of them.
If for some reason you need to take your aids out, please
kindly remember to take them with you! Do not leave them
in your car. The inside of our cars can become so hot in the
summer that the heat could damage your aids.
If you are unsure how to clean or dry your aids, talk with your
audiologist; he or she should be happy to show you how to do
this and provide you with any supplies you might need. Enjoy the
summer! There is no place more lovely than summer in Wisconsin; enjoy it and hear it all.

Protect your
pets from
Lyme disease
By Becca Lange, CVT

s the weather gets warmer, we find ourselves enjoying the

outdoors, often accompanied by our four-legged friends.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the number of Americans infected with Lyme disease is 10
times higher than reported to the CDC.
This translates to 30-35,000 cases in Wisconsin each year
rather than 3000+ cases reported to the State Department of
Health, according to the website Wisconsin Ticks and Tick-borne
Diseases.
This increase in Lyme disease has also been reported in dogs.
In fact, Wisconsin is considered a high risk area for contraction
of Lyme disease in dogs, with Outagamie, Brown and Marathon
counties amongst the highest with positive Lyme tests. Although
cats can also be bitten by ticks, Lyme disease is not fully understood in their species.

What is Lyme disease?

Lyme disease is caused by the bacteria Borrelia burgdorferi, which

is transmitted through ticks belonging to the Ixodes species. This
species is commonly referred to as the black-legged tick and the
deer tick. The ticks pick up the bacteria from rodents in the wild

and harbor the bacteria until they transmit it to people and pets
through bites.

How do you know if your dog has Lyme

disease and what do you do?

The most common symptoms include fever, quieter-than-normal

attitude, lack of appetite and shifting leg lameness. Shifting leg
lameness is when your pet limps on different legs on and off at
potentially different times. Symptoms often will resolve after a
course of antibiotics.
Many dogs that contract Lyme disease will not show symptoms, so it is important to have them examined by a veterinarian
if ticks are found. Your veterinarian can do a simple blood test
in the clinic to assist in diagnosing Lyme disease. Although not
common, more serious conditions can occur as a result of Lyme
disease and tick bites. Be certain to see your veterinarian if your
pet exhibits any of the previously mentioned symptoms or if ticks
have been discovered on them.

How can you prevent Lyme disease?

If your dog visits tick-infested areas, it is important to have them

vaccinated against Lyme disease. Unfortunately vaccines are not
enough, because they may not protect against all the strains or
types of B. burgdorferi bacteria. Ticks can also transmit other
diseases, including anaplasmosis and erlichiosis, that do not yet
have vaccines available.
Be sure to inspect your pet thoroughly after visiting a tickinfested area to check for ticks. It takes 24-48 hours for the tick to
transfer the bacteria into your pet after biting, so early removal is
imperative. If you are not comfortable removing the tick on your
own, your veterinary clinic will be more than happy to help.
Effective topical treatments applied directly to your pets skin are
also available. These treatments are often effective against other parasites, such as fleas, heartworm and some intestinal parasites. The
purpose of these medications is to kill the tick before it transfers the
bacteria to your pet. It is very important to select the most effective
www.naturespathways.com

and safest tick prevention for your pet. Tick prevention products are
available not only from your veterinarian, but over the counter at
supermarkets, pet supply stores and online retailers. Although these
products are less expensive than the ones your veterinarian may
supply, it is important to know the serious risks that they can pose to
your pet. Before you use these products, it is critical to consult your
veterinarian and thoroughly read every detail of the label.
With Lyme disease and all other health concerns with your pet,
it is very important to consult your veterinarian. A conscientious
and attentive pet owner, along with a veterinarian, can help your
pet live a happy, healthy life.

Nurturing
to be
nurtured
By Sharon Paprocki, MAC, LPC, NBCC

aving to name our strengths, most of us

would not put selfish or self-centered
on the list. We learned very young that
sharing with and giving to others is important.
Often, the lesson was learned so well that as adults,
it becomes difficult to give ourselves permission
to embrace what studies show to be true: taking
care of yourself practicing good self-care
promotes better physical, mental, emotional and
spiritual well-being.
For many of us, the concept of self-care is a bit
messy. It may register with us and we will include in our self-care
routine eating healthy, getting enough rest and exercising because
research has shown the indisputable, overall health benefits to
these choices. But what about the self-care that involves recharging our batteries, detoxing from a day of emotional and mental
stress, or making time for the healing power of engaging in a relaxing activity are we as likely to make time for this type of selfcare? In other words, are we willing to nurture ourselves?
Heres the great news. It turns out that the most enriching physical and mental health choice is not an either-or (Either I take

care of others or I feel selfish) mindset, but rather a perspective
that includes an and-both balance. To those of us who on occasion fall into the either-or pattern of equating self-care with being
selfish, we can choose a healthier and-both insight to embrace:
nurturing is nurturing.
For instance, how about nurturing by getting a bird feeder or
bird bath? Bird watching not only can be fun, but it can raise our
mood and help keep our brain strong. How? you ask. By taking
the time to identify the new feathered friend who stops to munch
at your birdfeeder, you are exercising your brain. Attending to the
feeder and bath gets you outside. There is a scientific connection
between our mood and our being outside. When we are outside
breathing fresh air, we tend to breathe deeper, which in turn
provides more oxygen to all parts of our body including our brain.
This surge of extra oxygen to our brain often elevates our alertness
www.naturespathways.com

and our mood.

Another outdoor activity proven to nurture our body, mind and
spirit is gardening. A CNN.com health reporter summed up the
benefits of gardening as a means to ease stress, keep you limber
and even improve your mood. Gardening is a sensory experience.
The sights, sounds and smells of the garden help us connect to
the less cluttered, simpler parts of our being. Whereas most of our
day is spent attending to direct attention activities, gardening
requires a more natural attending that allows us the room to enjoy
the experience. Gardening also gets us moving. There is bending,
digging, planting, weeding and watering, all of which add up to a
wonderful low-impact workout for our body, and we know what
is good for the body is also good for the emotional well-being of
the person.
It wont come as a surprise that we all have the basic need for
healthy touch. But did you also know that touch and movement
are two healthy ways to cope with and manage stress? Stroking,
holding or snuggling with a loving animal can quickly drain stress
and soothe tension. Walking a dog or riding a horse can provide
the physical movement needed to relieve stress. In our body, serotonin and dopamine each contribute to mood and mental wellbeing. It has been observed that playing with a pet can create
higher levels of serotonin and dopamine, which results in a person
feeling more relaxed. As most pet owners will tell you, pets make
great listeners and provide companionship as well.
Experts in preventive medicine recognize that human beings
are inherently connected to other living things. We are hardwired
with this connection; so whether it is tending a garden or a houseplant on your shelf, getting a birdfeeder and feeding birds, recycling to take care of the earth we live on, deciding to be a mentor or
some other type of volunteer, having a dog or cat, or even watching fish in a tank, the benefits include an enhanced sense of wellbeing. Caring for another living thing can help us to feel needed
and wanted. The natural result is less of a focus on our problems,
which provides for us a mental and emotional vacation.
The list of opportunities for you to nurture to be nurtured has
been started. Enjoy discovering how nurturing can help nurture
you.

Reduce pain
with music
therapy
By Dr. Nilesh Patel

usic can move people. It can bring a smile to a face, tears

to eyes; music can make us laugh and motivate us to
overcome obstacles. But did you know that the power
of music can even reduce the perception of pain?
As more and more studies reveal the benefits of music therapy
in health care, its no wonder that this field continues to grow.
Music therapy has been shown to lower stress, enhance comfort
and manage pain for people of all ages, genders and races.
It can work in many different ways. At its most basic, the ability
of rhythm to ease pain has been noted among patients in cancer
wards and nursing homes.
Some medical facilities will use music to elevate patients moods,
promote movement for physical rehabilitation, calm patients,
counteract apprehension or fear, and lessen muscle tension for
the purpose of relaxation. Music with a strong beat can actually
stimulate brainwaves, including those that govern the autonomic
nervous system, which can slow breathing and heart rates.
And while the greatest benefits of music therapy will come in
a professional setting with a trained expert, people can use music
to assist in relieving daily aches and pains. Music can be used for
relaxation, to get an added boost for physical activity, as a catharsis
when dealing with emotional stress, and in other ways.
There is no one kind of music that everyone finds soothing or
beneficial in reducing pain. Start by identifying that type of music that
soothes you the most and makes you feel comfortable. This might be
anything classic music, jazz, rock n roll, maybe its even rap.
You will likely find that you use different types of music to
promote specific types of healthy activities. While one form of
music might get you revved up for a walk or run through the
neighborhood, another type of music might be perfect to relax
your tight muscles after that run. A good balance of physical activity and periods of relaxation can dramatically help reduce pain
people experience.
Music also has the power to improve your state of mind. This
helps keep things like depression and anxiety at bay. Having a

positive attitude can prove beneficial in decreasing pain.
While listening to music can provide many benefits, actually
making the music has been shown to provide even better results.
And no, its not necessary to be a musician to get involved. Some
people find that rhythmically banging on a drum can provide
serious returns.
Should you experience persistent back or muscle pain, a consultation with a family physician or a pain management specialist is
recommended.

ountrycare Animal Complex is a

veterinary facility that offers traditional and holistic care. By integrating the best of traditional medicine
and surgery with holistic medicine, Countrycare can offer your pets the best of both
worlds.
Dr. Karen Strickfaden takes time to
answer a few questions about Countrycare:
Question: Why did you name your
facility Countrycare Animal Complex?
Answer: We wanted Countrycare to
convey the fact that we provide countrystyle hospitality and compassion while
delivering the highest quality veterinary
care. Our motto is Modern Veterinary
Medicine with Old-fashioned Caring. In
addition, we chose the word complex
rather than clinic or hospital, because
we offer a complete care center for all
moments of your animals lives, not only
when they are sick and need a hospital.
Q: What types of animals do you see at
Countrycare?
A: We work with dogs, cats, horses, and
exotic or pocket pets. Pocket pets include
reptiles, birds, ferrets, rabbits, hamsters,
guinea pigs and other small mammals.
Q: Where is your business located?
A: Countrycare Animal Complex is
located on the southeast side of Green Bay
at 4235 Elm View Road.
Q: What services does Countrycare
offer?
A: We provide preventive care such
as physical exams and vaccines that are
tailored to your pets lifestyle. We perform

surgical procedures from spay and neuter

surgeries to complex orthopedic cases. We
offer a wide range of holistic treatments
and supplements for your pet. In addition,
we provide boarding services for your pets.
Q: What do you mean by holistic
treatments?
A: Holistic medicine concentrates
on preventing or correcting the cause of
disease, not covering up the symptoms.
The goal is to use natural treatments that
help to restore the body to a state of balance
and harmony. At Countrycare Animal
Complex, we offer acupuncture and veterinary spinal manipulation (also known
as animal chiropractic). We also provide
bioresonance therapy known as bicom,
cranial sacral therapy, laser therapy and
medical ozone. In addition, we offer flower
essences and many herbal supplements.

Choices in
childbirth:
Part 2
Pain management
By Chelsie Towns

ccording to the Centers for Disease

Control and Prevention, 61 percent
of women in the United States
receive an epidural during labor and 56
percent of receive narcotics. Many of these
women may have no knowledge of alternative comfort measures and are not fully
informed of risks. Despite their popularity
and high rate of effectiveness, medications
used during labor come with a slew of risks.
EPIDURAL ANESTHESIA is a combination of medications delivered directly
to the space surrounding the spinal cord,
numbing the lower body. There are benefits
to an epidural, such as when a mom has
been engaged in a long labor and is tiring.
It can afford her some time to recoup
energy. Epidurals can be turned off once a
mom has rested, allowing her to continue
naturally. However, in general, an epidural
presents a number of risks that should be
weighed carefully, including a sudden drop
in maternal blood pressure, fetal distress,
a longer pushing phase, higher chance
of cesarean or instrument-assisted birth,
severe headaches and more.
NARCOTIC PAIN MANAGEMENT

includes a group of opiates which can

help by dulling pain. These are never
without risks, including nausea/vomiting,

dizziness, sleepiness, itchiness, low blood

oxygen and loss of airway reflex. Opiates
can affect the baby with central nervous
system depression, respiratory depression,
lower APGAR scores and difficulty regulating body temperature. Babies whose
mothers received pain medication during
labor tend also to have a difficult time with
breastfeeding, and epidurals may delay
mature breast milk production.
NITROUS OXIDE is a common labor
management option in the U.K., Europe and
Australia, though rarely seen in the USA.
Nitrous oxide has been shown to ease anxiety
in the mother, which can reduce the actual and
perceived pain of labor, helping some moms
cope better during labor when emotions may
inhibit the labor process. Widely used since
the 1900s, nitrous oxide is far less potent than
systemic narcotics but may be more effective,
with no significant adverse effects noted in
the mother or newborn.
TENS UNITS are handheld devices
that deliver a small electrical shock to the
muscles through pads placed on the skin.
Specialized TENS units are made for labor,
though theyre also used in pain management for other conditions. You may rent
or buy TENS device online, though some
practitioners and doulas offer them for use.

There is no known risk to mom or baby

with TENS use, though they cannot be
used in water.
NONMEDICAL OPTIONS come with
no risk to mom or baby, and with the right
support, can help most moms cope with

Why you
shouldnt
take just any
multivitamin
By Brandon Hintz and Diana Jaworski

ime for a personal question: Have you ever noticed that

when you take generic, store-brand multivitamins, or even
ones youve seen on TV, your urine is bright yellow?
If so, youre not alone. This is a pretty common occurrence
with multivitamins, and theres a reason for it. Most have a hard
coating or casing that requires the stomach to break the tablet
down, resulting in more stomach acid and the degradation of the
minerals and vitamins you took in the first place. When they pass
through, their structure causes them to appear to be neon yellow
in water (or your urine). Now, heres the million dollar question: If
youre taking a multivitamin for the nutrients, why on earth would
you want to literally flush those nutrients down the toilet instead
of having a blend your body can absorb?
There is a good alternative in powdered vitamins, as almost 100
percent of it is absorbed by the body because the nutrients are in
their most stable, accessible form. Even aside from the cost benefit,
this is simply a better way to take a multivitamin, especially for
athletes or body competitors.
Because powdered supplements are mega dosed with vegetable
and fruit vitamins, it is a good way to fill in the nutritional gaps
left by dieters who are looking to avoid the starches in veggies and
the fructose in fruit. By skipping out on things like broccoli, kale,
squash and other green vegetables, and also the high vitamin C
content of oranges, apples, strawberries and other fruits, its possible to cut down on sugars and lose fat. But its also a sacrifice in
vitamins that the body really cant afford. The immune system, all
the way from muscle recovery to sickness prevention, relies on
essential vitamins (meaning they must be obtained from outside
of the body) to function.

If you dont have access to fresh fruits and vegetables, their

healthier.

labor quite well. You may find resources

for how to perform these various measures
independently or with your birth partner
online or in natural childbirth books. Your
best bet is to hire a doula skilled in alternative comfort measure techniques. She can
help mothers by explaining options prior
to the onset of labor and assisting with the
following options:
MASSAGE, COUNTER-PRESSURE,
ACUPRESSURE: These methods
utilize hands or tools (such as tennis
balls), massage oil and essential oils.
Massaging and applying pressure to
specific areas of the body, like the
lower back, pelvis, feet and ankles, can
help alleviate pain by triggering pressure points, loosening muscles and
ligaments, and relieving some of the
pressure of baby in the back or pelvis.
MOVEMENT AND POSITIONING:
Certain positions and movements
are well-known to reduce pain and
encourage good fetal positioning, both
of which help ensure a shorter labor

and pushing phase. Squatting, hands
and knees, lunging, sitting on a birth
ball and swaying are all good positions and movements. Your doula or
midwife can suggest position changes
and help you find the most effective
positions for your needs.
WATER: Some women choose to
labor and birth in a tub or pool, which
has been shown to drastically reduce
the pain of labor and risk of tearing.
Water birth for the healthy mom and
baby provides a comforting option
that provides buoyancy and pressure
to the belly and pelvis. It also allows
for better stabilization in positions that
many women find awkward or tiring.

Unfortunately, though the majority

of local hospitals have bathtubs for
laboring, most do not allow for water
birth. Consider writing to your area
hospital to ask them to provide water
birth. Hospitals are swayed by popular
opinion of their customers!

Save time
with fast
meals

arm weather provides a great

opportunity to slow down and
savor time spent having fun in
the great outdoors. But time spent away from
home often leads to meals made on the fly
or last-minute jaunts to a nearby fast-food
restaurant. Though last-minute meals or trips
to the local burger joint might be convenient, they are not always
healthy. Fortunately, there are other ways to eat well even when
youre pressed for time.
CHOOSE FAST-COOKING FOODS. Stock the pantry with items

that will cook quickly. Fresh produce can be steamed or grilled

in only a few minutes and served alone as a vegetarian meal or
mixed with other foods for a quick entree. Seafood tends to cook
quite fast, and many seafood dishes make for a low-fat source of
healthy protein and essential fatty acids. Seafood also is lighter on
the stomach, which fits well with the smaller meals people tend to
enjoy during warm weather. Even foods that take a long time to
cook can be prepared quickly. Thick cuts of meat or poultry can be
fileted or sliced to allow them to cook faster.

COOK WITH HIGH HEAT. Instead of slow-roasting or plugging

in the slow cooker for hours on end, instant meal gratification often
means cranking up the heat. That is why grilling is such a popular
cooking method this time of year. Grilling will sear meats and vegetables over high heat, sometimes as much as 400 to 500 F, cooking
foods rapidly as a result. Select meats that do well over high heat,
such as those that are tender, because they will not require long
cooking periods to break down the fibers in the meat. If grilling is
not an option, then stir-frying is another way to cook fast over high
heat. Invest in a wok or another deep frying pan for such meals.
HAVE PREPARED ITEMS ON STANDBY. Keep the refrigera-

tor stocked with already-washed vegetables and lettuce. Parboiled

potatoes or pasta can be mixed in with a number of different

ingredients to create a filling meal. When free time allows, develop

a plan so meals take less time to prepare. If frozen items must be
defrosted, make sure to put them in the refrigerator the day before
they will be cooked to begin the thawing period. Otherwise, use a
microwave to safely defrost foods rather than leaving them out on
the counter where bacteria can grow.
DONT FRET A NO-FUSS NIGHT. Not every meal has to be a

three-course delight. A fast dinner could equate to a sandwich or

salad. Breakfast foods for dinner are also quite popular and can
cook up quickly. Surprise everyone with French toast or pancakes
made savory with bits of bacon and spinach in the batter. When all
else fails, a bowl of cereal can be adequate and fast.
WHEN DINING OUT, GO HEALTHY. Sometimes takeout or a

meal out with friends or family is the perfect ending to a great day.
Restaurant food tends to pack more fat and calories into largerthan-normal portion sizes, so choose steamed or broiled foods
whenever possible. Divide larger portions among other diners.
Clear soups are better for you than cream-based soups. Try to fill
up on vegetables rather than bread served before the meal.

Desperate
for relief
from anxiety
Common ways of
getting by
By Lisa Klarner

id you know that 26 percent of

people in the world age 18 or
older suffer from a mental illness?
A person with a mental illness like social
anxiety disorder may not gain the courage
to seek treatment for over 10 years due
to fear or may not seek treatment at all
because they dont realize life can be positively different.
Individuals with anxiety are often searching for solutions. If there could be even a
minute of peace in a day filled with a continuous stream of negative thoughts, it might
provide a glimmer of hope inside a turbulent
mind. It is for this reason, and a general sense
of hopelessness, that people seek out ways to

numb the pain and distract themselves in an

effort to gain a sense of control.
As a result of this constant seeking, there
are things people will naturally begin to do
to cover up the symptoms. These ways of
getting by will never result in long-term
healing. But some of them, like distractions
and preparation, can help a person with
social anxiety disorder gain the courage to
begin taking steps in the right direction.

can temporarily stop the negative-thought

spiral. Even grabbing a notebook and
writing down words like calm or peace
or doodling can have a similar result.

Perfectionism

Social anxiety disorder stems around the

fear of embarrassment. Attempting to
create the perfect report, sharing a perfectly
funny Facebook post or dressing to perfection can minimize the chance of a mistake
and reduce the likelihood of being judged
in any way. But, it is never possible to be
perfect. When someone sets unreasonably
high expectations and expects perfection
in all areas of their lives, they will fall short.

Preparation

The anticipatory anxiety people with social

anxiety feel can often be worse than the
anxiety experienced when in the actual
situation. Being prepared can ease anxiety
and give a sense of knowing what to expect.
Preparing an agenda for a meeting or
finishing a paper by a required deadline are
reasonable ways to be prepared. Allowing
an upcoming conversation to run through
your mind in an effort to be fully prepared
in advance isnt reasonable. We can never be
prepared for everything. Striking a balance
between preparation and going with the
flow is the best way to live life. This may
not be easy to do until steps are taken to seek
therapy, but it is a goal worth striving for.

of importance is placed on maintaining
that relationship and they quickly become

Relationship dependency can be difficult

a person with social anxiety can do is focus

Household
alternatives
to hazardous
materials
By Jennifer Semrau

any households are making the effort to reduce the

amount of hazardous or toxic materials used in and
around the home. Try swapping these alternatives for
some of their more hazardous counterparts. The recipes below use
common ingredients you likely already have at home.

Nontoxic cleaners

To make an all-purpose cleaner, you will need liquid soap, borax,

vinegar (or lemon juice) and water. Mix 1 teaspoon each of liquid
soap and borax, with 2 tablespoons of vinegar into a quart of
water. The mixture can then be sprayed or wiped over an area and
dried with a clean cloth.
To make a nontoxic window cleaner, you will need some of
the same items as above. Simply mix 2 tablespoons of vinegar or
lemon juice with 1 pint of water. Place in a spray bottle and use a
lint-free rag to wipe clean.
Bathroom cleaners can be amongst the most toxic in the home.
Whats worse is that many cleaners use acid-based ingredients
(hydrochloric acid, sulfuric acid or oxalic acid), while others use
chlorine bleach-based solutions. Be sure to never mix bathroom
cleaners or use one immediately after another as a reaction can
result. Better yet, try one of these nontoxic alternatives.
To clean a toilet bowl, sprinkle baking soda inside the toilet
bowl. Add a couple of drops of dish soap and scrub the toilet bowl
68

Natures Pathways | July 2014

with a brush. A small amount of vinegar can be used to remove

stains. Best of all, baking soda has a fresh scent, versus the chemical smell of many cleaners.
To remove drain clogs, again use baking soda and vinegar. Pour
a cup of baking soda down the drain and then add a cup
vinegar. Cover the drain and let the mixture react (it will fizz) for
five minutes. After, pour a full tea kettle of boiling water down
the drain. If necessary, repeat. Of course, a plunger or mechanical
snake are also nontoxic ways to clear a drain. And, like the toilet
bowl cleaner, these methods avoid the irritating smell and risk of
chemical burns that can be associated with commercial products.

Nontoxic weed killers

Now is the time of year when weeds can invade our sidewalks,
lawns and gardens. Before you reach for the weed killer, try one
of these methods.
The simplest nontoxic weed killer is boiling water! Pouring boiling
water over any plant will kill it, so be careful to only pour over offending plants. Reuse your boiling water from pasta by straining the
water into another pot and using it immediately over weeds.
Another recipe uses common ingredients from the household
cleaner recipes above. Mix 1 tablespoon of liquid soap into 1
gallon of vinegar. Place in a sprayer and squirt onto weeds. Like
the boiling water, be sure to only apply to weeds, as the acid in
www.naturespathways.com

the vinegar will pull moisture from plants, including the plants
you want to keep. Use on a hot day for best results, and note that
multiple applications may be necessary. Some versions of this
recipe recommend adding 1 cup of salt to the solution (mixing
thoroughly until dissolved). However, the addition of salt will
make the ground unsuitable to grow anything for some time. This
attribute might be favorable however, if you intend to use the weed
killer in cracks of your driveway or sidewalk.
Finally, remember if you do have unwanted household hazardous materials, like cleaners or weed killers used prior to your transition to nontoxic alternatives, bring them to a household hazardous waste or Clean Sweep program. Call your local solid waste
office for more information.

Nutritional Healing is based on meeting wellness goals through
body weight composition and therapeutic lifestyle programs.
Start off your program with a body weight composition analysis in which your body is assessed for fat mass, fat-free mass and
total body water. Its a simple test that takes just minutes with no
discomfort. A printout is provided with all the numbers explained.
This is used to monitor the sustainable fat loss, not just weight loss.
Its important to lose weight, and its also important to reduce fat.
Knowing which foods to consume is also important. A body
could be sensitive to even the healthy foods one is consuming.
With a quick and easy test, your food sensitivities can be determined. Eliminating these trigger foods can help reduce the inflammation in a body to speed the process of weight/fat loss and reduce
illness. Everyone has sensitivities and can benefit from this test.
There are so many supplements available and choosing the right
ones can be difficult. The quantity to take, the quality of the supplement and the differing types of supplements are a few puzzling

analyze and advise what is best for you. There is also a medical
food program, which can specifically target nutritional needs
and clinical conditions such as fibromyalgia, digestive disorders,

Getting the
most nutrition
out of your
garden

By Rosalie Misco

t is garden time again; the kale is in, the tomatoes are planted
and we are really busy too busy to get that nutrition from the
garden to the tummies. It happens to all of us, even Grandma
Rose. This month, I have tips to help you avoid wasting the healthy
food from your garden because you are just too busy.
Soon it will be August and tomatoes will ripen, a few here and
there. We cant eat them all and they dont keep very long. Here is a
tip: When your tomatoes are fully ripe, wash them and put them in
a 2-gallon freezer bag and place it in the freezer. Keep adding ripe
tomatoes until the bag is full. They will keep all winter when frozen.
On a lazy Sunday, fill your 18-quart roaster with frozen tomatoes. Cook them on high with the lid on until they are well cooked.
Smash the tomatoes down if the skins dont burst. Take the lid off
and let them cook until liquid is reduced to half. At this point,
you have tomato sauce with skins and seeds. Let the tomatoes cool
somewhat or overnight and put the tomatoes with skins and seeds
in your blender. Blend and like magic, the skins and seeds are gone
and you are left with very healthy tomato sauce to use in chili and
spaghetti sauce.
To make a healthy tomato drink, cook the tomatoes as above.
Add onions, celery, etc. but dont reduce to sauce consistency.
Put this in the blender. Add kale, lettuce or whatever you find in
the garden to the blender. Now you have a very healthy potion. Put
the sauce or juice you have made in quart-size heavy duty freezer
bags and then put the bags into the freezer to use all winter long or
for when you have time to cook. Or, thaw a tomato juice drink and
keep it in the refrigerator for up to a week.
For added nutrition, add some Hi-maize 260 to sauces and
chili. Hi-maize 260 resistant starch fiber lowers cholesterol, and
www.naturespathways.com

prevents blood sugar rise and weight gain. Hi-maize 260 is a nongenetically modified organism (GMO) product.
Natural Expressions 100% Whole Grain Bakery carries Hi-maize
260 and the health information you need to make it work for you.
Grandma Rose at Natural Expressions 100% Whole Grain Bakery

Jane finds
relief and
rejuvenation
with massage
therapy

have always loved visiting Rejuvenessence mediSpa in Appleton for my skin

care and facial services. Being in my
sixth month of pregnancy, I shared with
my aesthetician there, Heather Allman,
that I was getting quite uncomfortable. I
asked her if they offered massage therapy

at Rejuvenessence and was delighted to

find out that they have a great massage
therapist, Danella Lynn, LMT, KMI. After
my amazing microdermabrasion facial, I
set up a massage appointment as soon as
I could.
When I showed up for my

much-anticipated massage appointment,

I filled out a short health questionnaire
and was greeted by Danella, who asked me
about any issues I was having. I explained
to her that I had been experiencing a nerve
pinch in my lower back ever since becoming pregnant. I have tried many treatments
to get rid of the pain with no relief. Danella
was quite confident in thinking it was a
muscular problem that she could work on
during this appointment and also future
appointments.
While speaking with Danella, I learned
she is originally from Tennessee and
was brought to this area because of her
husbands job. While in Tennessee, she
had a great relationship with an orthopedic doctor that she worked hand in hand
with for referrals. She has a lot of passion
in helping her clients feel better and getting
to the root of their issues. In the past, I have
had massages strictly focused on relaxation. Both are great, but with Danella, I
was pleased to know she would work on
helping me to feel better and be able to
move without pain.
Danella set up the massage bed for me
to lie on my side with a comfortable side
pillow under my belly and a booster under
my legs. I instantly felt relief just from lying
www.naturespathways.com

in that position. Danella was extremely professional as she worked

on my problem areas and hip area in an effort to release the pain I
have been suffering from. She really took the time to listen and feel
what was happening with my body, and I could definitely tell when
she was working on a problem area. She made sure I was comfortable the whole time and I even ended up falling asleep during my
appointment!
After the appointment, Danella told me to take my time getting
off the table. I could feel that the pinching in my lower back was
much better already. She provided me with water on my way out
and I knew I was hooked on the experience. I decided to set up
future appointments during the last three months of my pregnancy to keep me comfortable.
Rejuvenessence mediSpa provides head-to-toe body treatments
including laser light therapy, hair removal and many types of face and
body treatments, while also providing high-quality products to take

give Rejuvenessence mediSpa a call to set up an appointment!

past of pole and favor heels, while others

favor the new direction the sport is going:
toward the Olympics as a trial sport in 2020!
This is a real form of fitness and competition
that was included in the Arnold Sports Festival this year to outstanding reviews.
On May 24 and 25, I had the honor of
judging the Central Pole Championships
(CPC) in Chicago. This event was put on by
the Pole Sport Organization, which holds
four regional (Atlantic, Central, Pacific,
Southern) competitions across the nation,
where the top three professional-level
dancers advance to national competition,
August 1-3 in New York City.
What made this event such an honor to
be a part of is the focus on getting people on
stage, regardless of skill level. Many competitions have video submission. This means
that competitors submit videos, which are
judged, and only the top few perform live.
Obviously this method of competition saves
time, but so much can be learned about
yourself and your craft through performing in front of an audience and the Pole
Sport Organization excels at providing
these opportunities. Founders Amy Guion

and B.J. Pettigrew have created something

amazing that truly lets everyone pole dance.
There are five levels that give any student of
pole the opportunity to perform:
LEVEL 1, AMATEUR: Dancers at
this level are permitted to engage in
floor work, dance, spinning moves and
climbs. There is no inverting (going
upside down) at this level.
LEVEL 2, AMATEUR: In addition to
the skills permitted in Level 1, dancers
may perform inverts on the pole from
the floor only.
LEVEL 3, AMATEUR: Dancers at
this level may perform any tricks and
any inversions; however, dancers must
maintain three points of contact with
the pole while inverted.
LEVEL 4, AMATEUR: Dancers may
perform any tricks and any inversions.
PROFESSIONAL: This level is the
qualifier for Nationals and offers a
monetary prize at the national level.
There are also three different types of
competitions within the Amateur levels.
You have the option of competing:
www.naturespathways.com

CHAMPIONSHIP: focuses on the

dancers technique, flexibility, artistry
and difficulty of tricks
ENTERTAINMENT: focuses less on
the difficulty of the tricks executed
and more on the dancers ability to
interpret a piece of music to provide a
comical or upbeat performance
DRAMATIC: focuses on the dancers
ability to present a serious, emotional,
artistic interpretation of a piece of music
There are also four different age ranges for
the Amateur levels of competition: Youth
aged 10-17, Juniors aged 18-24, Seniors aged
between 25-39 and Masters aged 40 and
older. So competitors can self-select which
level and type of competition, and then are
grouped with people of similar ages.
The end result is two awesome days of
pole competition where you cheer for a
woman who is taking the stage for the first
time ever in her 50-some years and who
has been dancing for only a year, and for
the guy who dropped out of a biomedical
engineering doctoral program in New York
to pursue pole full time (DaWei Hou went

Competition, with Arnold Schwarzenegger.

on to win the CPC Championship Male

Division). This sport is about supporting
dancers, no matter their level and the Pole
Sport Organization does a phenomenal
job. The audience screams as loudly for the
young dancer who does a basic invert as
they do for the gravity-defying tricks in the
Championship Division.
Pole is an extremely diverse sport. The
athleticism of this sport is mind blowing
and is growing every year with every
competition. The integration of other forms

of dance, like ballet, pointe and breakdancing, creates a huge diversity in style. It was
an honor to judge these athletes and provide
feedback for their growth as dancers.
Dr. Paula Brusky is the owner of Aerial Dance Pole
Exercise LLC in Appleton. For more information
about the Pole Sport Organization, visit polesportorganization.com. For more information about local
classes, training or questions about pole, ask Paula at

Chasteberry
Vitex agnus-castus

hasteberry (also known as chastetree berry, vitex or monks pepper)

is the fruit of the chaste tree, a
small shrub-like tree native to central Asia
and the Mediterranean region. The name is
thought to come from a belief that the plant
promoted chastity it is reported that
monks in the Middle Ages used chasteberry to decrease sexual desire.
Chasteberry has been used for thousands of years, mostly by women to ease
menstrual problems and to stimulate
the production of breast milk. Currently,
chasteberry is still used as a folk or traditional remedy for menstrual problems,
such as premenstrual syndrome, as well as
for symptoms of menopause, some types of
infertility and acne.
The dried ripe chasteberry is used to
prepare liquid extracts or solid extracts that
are put into capsules and tablets.

What the science says

A few studies of chasteberry for premenstrual syndrome have found a benefit.

However, most of
these studies were
not well designed, so
firm conclusions cannot
be drawn.
Small studies suggest that
chasteberry may help with breast
pain and some types of infertility,
but there is not enough reliable scientific evidence to determine whether chasteberry has any effect on these conditions.
The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine has funded
studies on chasteberry. Projects have
explored how chasteberry works in the
body and how it might affect symptoms of
premenstrual syndrome.

Side effects and cautions

Chasteberry has not been associated with

serious side effects; however, it can cause
gastrointestinal problems, acne-like rashes
and dizziness.
Chasteberry might affect certain hormone
levels. Women who are pregnant or taking

birth
control pills
or who have a hormonesensitive condition (such as breast
cancer) should not use chasteberry.
Because chasteberry may affect the
dopamine system in the brain, people
taking dopamine-related medications,
such as certain antipsychotic drugs and
Parkinsons disease medications, should
avoid using chasteberry.
Tell all your health care providers about
any complementary health practices you
use. Give them a full picture of what you
do to manage your health. This will help

Break your barriers to success!
