Hello, I'm new to the Cisco Learning network. I am in the process of doing self-study for ICND1. Does anyone have any good pointers for me?, seeing that I'm just getting
started out. Thank you.

Re: Hello Everyone
First things first, learn IP before you do anything else, skip to chapter 12.... I've told this to people and some have complained to me saying "Why should I
have to skip chapters?" Some people just can't deal with change...

Everything that you will study involves IP, it's everywhere! Therefore, I say learn IP first, that way while studying the book you have a chance to also
practice subnetting at the same time. Each time there's a topology with IP address find what the network is and how many ip address are available etc....

After learning subnetting IP, read chapter one then the next day read it while taking notes, then the next day create lab using packet tracer that
encompasses everything that chapter 1 disussed. When you are creating the lab make instructions so that someone else could use the lab too. The
reason for doing this is that creating a lab actually requires more knowledge and understanding then doing someone's elses lab or troubleshooting
someone elses lab - this is due to the fact that you must be able to forsee everything to make the lab such as potential issues or what's going to happen
when you do this or that... Do the lab. Repeat this with every chapter, and you should be practicing subnetting every day.

I realize that you are just starting out so you won't be able to really start doing labs yet, but once you have learned enough to where you can start building
some simple networks, implement the lab part to your studies.

Feedback from someone who listened to me, i'll let him chime in if he wishes when he views this thread

Wow..reading through this chapter has connected some dots so far. I can't believe people complain when you tell them to read this chapter first.

Re: Hello Everyone
How you study depends on you and how you feel about what you've read. I usually read a chapter, and then re-read it and take notes. You could also
read just the first paragraph of each heading to get a feel for what the chapter is about, and then actually read the chapter and take notes. I'm just giving
you ideas for how to study; what actually works for you is up to you.

Re: Hello Everyone
Welcome....The ICND1 Official Certification Guide is a good place to start. Try to get your hands on Cisco Packet Tracer and some labs. You can even
create your own labs with Packet Tracer from the reading material.

Have fun.....

Re: Hello Everyone
Start out with Wendell Odom's ICND 1 Officail Cert Guide. Its a good starting place.
Then if you can, pick up Chris Bryant's Trainsignla Video Series. And, if you can get hold of Packet Tracer.

That's all you need. Study, practice .. Study some more and practice some more and you will be fine.

All The Best.

Re: Hello Everyone
You could buy 5 routers or switches for the price of train signal, no?

Re: Hello Everyone
I am from India, and that's not the case here.
We have Indian Rupee ( INR ) here, 1 USD = 53 INR.
Trainsignal costs around 21000 INR ( $397 ) and a router or a switch in my country costs arnd 15000 INR to 20000 INR.
So, if i were to buy 5 routers or switches, that would cost me 100,000 INR ( $1900 ). CCIE and 2 professional level exams could be done in that price.

No offence, but i gave dat suggestion as per myself. I really don't know what is it like in other countries or in USA.

Re: Hello Everyone
Well over here it's $500 for trainsignal, which can easily buy you at least 5x 3550 multi-layer switches or about 4x 2621XMs with 256MB DRAMand 64MB
flash along with the upgraded bootrom...

Why are they so expensive in India?

So in summary, if you live in the U.S. and have to choose between trainsignal and equipment... choose equipment.

Re: Hello Everyone
Well, I would say that they are the best in the market ( as per me ). Cisco Press books and Trainsignal videos were used by me and i passed and
scored well.
People say - Chris is boring, he is dry, we feel sleepy. But, he does provide you with alot of information and probably all that you need to know,
understand and clear your exam.
One tip i will give, while watching his videos : TAKE NOTES.

Re: Hello Everyone
I am curious.Roxana..did you start with chapter 12 like Joshua suggested?

When he told me that same advice I was several chapters into Odoms ICND1 book so I stopped..jumped to the chapter in IP and after read that I went
back to chapter one and reading the ip chapter helped me understand the other chapters.
