Lesson Plan for the Subject of Pressure Ulcers

Outcome:

Upon completion of this class the nursing student will be able to demonstrate a basic
understanding of the registered nurse role using the nursing process in understanding and
preventing pressure ulcers.

Objectives:

1) The student will be able to explain the etiology of pressure ulcers.

2) The student will be able to identify 3 risk factors for patients to develop pressure ulcers.

3) The student will be able to classify all pressure ulcer stages.

4) The student will be able to identify at least 5 common pressure ulcer sites.

5) The student demonstrates critical thinking by creating a simple nursing care plan to
prevent pressure ulcers for a patient.

Needed Materials:

Ackley, B. J., & Ladwig, G. B. (2010). Nursing diagnosis handbook: An evidence-based guide to

planning care (9
th
ed.). St. Louis, MO: Mosby Elsevier.

Potter, P. & Perry, a. (2005). Fundamentals of nursing (6
th
ed.). St. Louis: Mosby Elsevier

Student Preparation:

1) Before class students will be assigned to read Chapter 47 in the Potter and Perry text,
namely, Skin Integrity and Wound care, p. 1483-1529.

2) Students are expected to complete the pre-lecture crossword puzzle that accompanies this
learning section (see Appendix B).

Procedures for the Lesson:

1) Educator presents interactive power point presentation discussing the etiology, risk
factors, classification, common sites, and nursing diagnoses associated with pressure
ulcers.
2) Educator to pause the power point presentation by incorporating the simulated body part
with wound prop for an interactive hands on learning experience and to aid in knowledge
synthesis.

3) At the end of the power point the educator incorporates a critical thinking exercise by
dividing the class into small discussion groups for them to create a nursing care plan for
the prevention of pressure ulcers.

4) After a few minutes the educator has each group explain their nursing care plan and
discussion ensues as to if it is in agreement with the information presented.

Assessment:

1) Educator provides quiz after interactive lecture (with some cross word puzzle words
matching answers in quiz). Information taken from power point also in quiz. At the next
class session the quiz and answers will be reviewed so that any misconceptions of
knowledge can be corrected.

Modifications:

1) Any English as a second language students may be given extra time to complete the quiz
in order to ask clarification of wording used in this and any quiz.
