GREAT WHITE SHARKS
SHARK FACT
Sharks eyes have a tapetum lucidum, a layer of mir-
rored crystals located behind the retina. This enables sharks
to see even in dark or murky water and up to 10 times
better than humans in clear water.

TRENTON A state Superior Court judge says New
Jersey is too broke to make a full payment into the pen-
sion system for public workers.
Judge Mary Jacobson on Wednesday refused to
grant an injunction sought by labor unions to reverse
Gov. Chris Christies decision to short this years pay-
ment by nearly $900 million to cover a budget shortfall.
Jacobson wouldnt even go along with a request from
Steven Weissman, an attorney representing the Com-
munications Workers of America and other labor
unions, to have Christie turn over $300 million desig-
nated for the states rainy-day surplus fund.
Weissman argued that the state may have even more
money on hand than the $300 million, but lawyers for
Christie countered that the states financial condition is
indeed dire.
There is no money with five days left in the fiscal
year, said Deputy Attorney General Jean Reilly. Its

LONG BRANCH Fishermen still dont like it, saying
that it will limit beach access, but the Army Corps of
Engineers has agreed to notch three jetties instead of
the planned six along the northern Monmouth County
coast.
Notching is the removal of the jetty rocks closest to
the sand so water can pass through. Fishermen and oth-
ers say that when jetties are notched, they cannot ac-
cess them for fishing, and they have been fighting the
corps over the plan for years.
(We) do not believe jetty notching is good, said

arly on June 20, Rich Lattanzi steered
his boat, On the Hunt, to one of his fa-
vorite fishing spots to see if he could
tempt a thresher shark onto his hook.
He was about a mile and a half off
Long Beach Island, with swimmers visible on
the beach, when he got a tug on his line.
As soon as I hooked into it, it felt like there
was some weight to it, he said.
When he got the fish up to the boat, Lattanzi,
who was by himself, knew he had to take a pic-
ture or nobody would believe him.
Oh man, this is a white shark, Lattanzi re-
called thinking. He estimated the fish to be 6
feet long and probably 100 to 120 pounds, likely
a juvenile. After snapping a picture, he re-
moved the hook with a pair of pliers and
watched the fearsome fish swim off.
Reports of great white sharks have become
more prevalent along the Jersey Shore. On
Saturday, a fisherman recorded on video a
great white shark munching on bait fish off
Cape May. Last year, a great white was spotted
circling a boat off the coast of Atlantic City.
