Stars and Stripes Is Theme for the 2014 Parade
Parade Route
The parade travels along a two-mile
route through the streets of Webster
Groves and draws a crowd of thousands
of spectators with more than 80 units.
See map below.
The parade begins at Lockwood and
Selma and travels west on Lockwood. It
turns south on South Gore and travels
down Gore to Big Bend. It then turns
east on Big Bend and turns one last time
south on Elm Avenue. The parade ends at
Memorial Park (at the intersection of Elm
Avenue and Glendale Road).
Marshals
The grand marshal for this years
parade is Mike Oppermann, who recently
retired after 32 highly successful years as
Director of Parks and Recreation for the
City of Webster Groves. In addition, we
are honored to have volunteers from
Webster Groves Masonic Temple
to serve as parade marshals again
this year, lining up units, enforcing
security measures and securing the
course.
Parade Judges
Judges for the parade are:
Don Gerber, president of
Gerber Chapel, which has been in
Webster Groves for 52 years. Don is
a prior Webster Groves Citizen of the
Year.
Joe Rath, president of Acme
Printers-Lithographers, Inc., which has
been in Webster Groves for 41 years.
Roger Krull, owner of Rogers
Produce, which has been in Webster
Groves for 36 years.
Judges have the honor of selecting
parade units to receive awards in the
various categories listed on this page.
Awards will be given at the July 15 city
council meeting.
Parade Awards
A frst place (Best) and an honorable
mention (Outstanding) winner will
be awarded in each of the following
categories:
Childrens Entry
Civic Entry
Classic Entry
Commercial Entry
Neighborhood Entry
Performing Entry
Best Theme
Visiting Entry
Novelty Unit
Special Judges Awards (three
awards for deserving units)
Safety
Of course, safety is of paramount
importance, but parades have inherent
risks, so its important that parade
participants and spectators do all they
can to help.
With regard to parade units, several
safety measures are in place and
enforcement will be without exception.
There will be no throwing of water balloons
or large super soakers allowed from any
parade unit or spectators. Each sizeable
motorized unit will have wheel walkers,
whose job it is to keep the path clear in
front and on the sides of the unit.
Parade participants will not be allowed
to throw candy or other items from a
moving unit, but they may have walkers
who will hand the items to spectators
on the sidewalks. Violators should be
reported to a parade marshal or police
offcer.
Along the parade route, parents and
adults should keep close track of their
children and ensure that they are not
endangering themselves by running in
front of a parade vehicle to get a piece of
candy or trinket. Remain on the curb or
behind it. There will be no sales of water,
ice cream, etc., on the street once the
parade has started and 10 minutes prior
to start time until the conclusion of the
event.
Safety is everyones job. Please help by
doing what you can.

Ask a dozen adults what the highlight
of the Webster Groves annual July
4 celebration is and you will get a
dozen different answers: the freworks,
the parade, the barbecue food, the
entertainment, seeing friends and
neighbors, and so forth. But ask a dozen
children and teenagers about Community
Day/July 4 celebration in Webster Groves
and the answer will always be the same:
The carnival rides are the very best!
For the 89th consecutive year, the
Lions Club of Webster Groves will hold
its annual summertime carnival and
barbecue. This tradition serves, frst and
foremost, as an opportunity for families,
friends and neighbors in the community
to come together in a safe, pleasant and
patriotic setting. Since 1926, the Webster
Groves Lions Club has relied on its annual
carnival and barbecue as the groups
primary fundraising event of the year.
Lots of Rides and Food
This year promises to be one of the
biggest and best July 4 events ever in
Webster Groves! The Fairgrounds will be
flled with more than a dozen colorful, fun
and classic amusement rides, including
a $5 million attraction provided by PBJ
Happee Days Shows, Inc., one of the fnest
companies of its kind. There are two nights
of unlimited ride wristbands: -July 2 and 3.
The huge Lions Club Food Tent will once
again be one of the most popular places
in town for all four days as a place to meet
and, of course, eat. As always, Lions Club
members will be grilling and serving a wide
variety of freshly prepared and reasonably
priced food, such as full slabs of ribs, half
slabs of ribs, pork steaks, chicken, rib tips,
rib eye steaks, bratwursts, hamburgers,
hot dogs, baked potatoes, corn on the cob,
baked beans and more.
Outstanding Community Involvement
The Lions Club of Webster Groves
is involved all year in the planning and
organizing of the Webster Groves Annual
Community Days/July Fourth Celebration.
This dedicated effort by the Lions Club
began in 1960 when Webster Lions moved
its summertime carnival and barbecue
from Labor Day to July 4 as part of a then-
new local event called Webster Groves
Community Days. The subsequent 54-year
partnership between the Lions Club and
Websters overall July 4 festivities has been
a very special and unique collaboration for
the community and people from all parts
of the metropolitan region.
Hundreds of Volunteers
In order for the Webster Lions July 4
carnival and barbecue to occur, members
of the Lions Club and their families and
friends sacrifce their personal holiday
fun to work virtually non-stop for a full
week on the Fairgrounds. From the time
set-up begins until clean-up is concluded,
more than 6,000 volunteer hours are
expended by Lions Club members and
many other volunteers. Everything on the
July 4 Fairgrounds is coordinated and
supervised by members of the Webster
Groves Lions Club. The overall chairperson
for the Webster Lions 2014 July 4 carnival
and barbecue is Rob Halama.
The Webster Lions donate substantial
funding toward the spectacular freworks
display on July 4. The Lions Club also
commits signifcant fnancial support to
the reconditioning and restoration of the
Lions Athletic Fields following the July 4
carnival and barbecue.
Memorable and Safe
July Fourth Holiday
The annual Webster Lions July 4 Carnival
and Barbecue involves a considerable
commitment to the community on the
part of the Lions Club. Safety is always
a foremost concern. Several years ago,
for example, the Webster Lions spent
$17,000 to upgrade the electrical system
that serves the July 4 Fairgrounds site.
The July 4 carnival and barbecue is the
single largest project of the year for the
Webster Groves Lions Club. Depending
on the weather, the fnancial results are
better some years than others. Year in and
year out, the Lions Club works tirelessly
to make the Community Days/July 4
festivities in Webster Groves a safe and
memorable celebration for all!
Many Benet from
Webster Lions Generosity
This carnival and barbecue is the Lions
largest investment of time and money
and the clubs major fundraiser for the
whole year. As soon as the carnival ends
the Lions begin planning for the next year.
The Webster Groves Lions Club is proud
of the many ways it is able to support
its community. It is only able to do good
work because of the direct and dedicated
support of the very community in which
it lives and works. Each year, the Lions
award numerous $1,000 scholarships to
promising young high school graduates in
Webster Groves in May. Webster Groves
and the Lions have a true synergy -- the
ability to accomplish something greater
together than anyone could do alone.

Bring Old Eyeglasses and Used
Sunglasses to the Fairgrounds
An ongoing project of the Webster Lions
and other Lions Clubs is the collection
of old eyeglasses and sunglasses for
recycling and reuse by people in Central
and South America. In the midst of
having fun and enjoying the July Fourth
Fairgrounds, everyone is urged to bring
and donate old eyeglasses and sunglasses
at the Lions Club Booth in the Fairgrounds
midway. These donated glasses will be
recycled and become a Gift of Sight to
needy people in other countries.

Rain clouds parted long
enough on Thursday evening,
May 8, to allow a dry opening
and dedication of the Webster
Groves Sculpture Garden.
About 100 people turned out
for the opening of the citys 18th
park, located on two wedges
of land at the intersection of
Kirkham and Gore avenues.
Gore bisects the two tracts and
the half-acre garden forms an
entry point for those traveling
into Old Webster.
Art displayed includes two
works by the late Ernest Trova:
Abstract Variation No. 1 and
T-Gox #7. Both pieces are on
long-term loan from Laumeier
Sculpture Park.
Other pieces include a mosaic
fower and bird sculpture called
Inforescence by Catharine
Magel; a metal sculpture called
Old School by Evan Lewis;
and several sculpted eggs called
Beginnings by Carol Fleming.

Few events are so satisfying as
reaching a goal and performing
in ones hometown.
Kirkwood High School
graduate James Hesse will be
doing just that when he plays
in Henry IV and Henry V at
the Shakespeare Festival this
weekend.
The son of Dave Hesse and
Lisa Sapienza, James Hesse was
born and raised in Kirkwood. He
was bit by the acting bug when
he took part in a play at Tillman
Elementary School.
My parents told me I was the
only person on stage that they
could understand, he said. I
thought, Oh, this is fun! I want
to do this.
He kept performing throughout
his time at Nipher Middle School
and Kirkwood High School, but
decided he wanted to be a math
