CONCEPT
The Fab Collab iteration of the Columbia Transit System bus stop redesign is based on
versatility, modularity, and sustainability. With aesthetics catching the eye of riders and
art aficionados alike, the design solution will put a new face on the citys public
transportation system. A living art gallery displaying Columbias local artists will be fea-
tured at every stop.
GREEN INITIATIVES
The planned overhaul of the current Columbia Transit System bus shelters is backed by
green design initiatives and sustainable technologies. The modularity of the bus shelter
design is a cost effective approach to sustainable design. All exterior panels are based
on a 4x8 template and are all fastened to one another and the underlying structure by
glass friction clamps. All panels are interchangeable allowing for a customizable shelter
layout. Various works of art can be displayed on each section and if damaged, the
repair process is as simple as unfastening and replacing them.
ENERGY: The consideration of a more efficient approach to saving electricity was
acknowledged by the introduction of solar panels into our design solution. Photovolta-
ics will be located on a dual axis rotating panel located above the exterior bike storage
area. Each set of solar panels will be site-specifically installed to maximize solar gain for
each bus stop location. This system will be the source of power for the interior LED
tube lighting for night use.
WATER: Sustainability is capitalized on our green roof system. Two thirds of the
rooftop will be composed of green roof blocks to collect a large amount of rainwater
and any runoff from the these portions of the roof, including the backward sloping
canopy at top, will be collected by a gutter system and then displaced among the sur-
rounding site.
INDOOR AIR QUALITY: Circulation will be controlled by the open entry space
up front and cross ventilation will be governed by perforated kick plates at the base of
all transparent panels and through the open canopy at the rooftop.

Eco-Mod shelters are all about the experience, whether it
pertains to the area in which it is located or even the route color. This
allows users to never experience the same thing twice. Since our
design is extremely modular, each panel is interchangeable, en-
abling bus shelters to change as styles and
preferences change. This motivates users to go to all the
shelters, thus using multiple connection routes. Art work will be
located inside the shelters to create an experience inside and out.
The interchangeability of these panels allows for use and reuse,
adding to the sustainability because they will continue their life-cycle
on other shelters or in homes.
The roof contains mesh and
aluminum, with recycled panels
and framing. The overhang pro-
tects the shelter from rain and
snow, while the mesh allows for
airflow and cooling in the
summer.
These supports
have the option
to be made of
either recycled
aluminum, or
reclaimed wood.
Bike racks will be made
out of the same materi-
al as the support col-
umns. They will be
attached to the con-
crete and
structure by L-brackets
Transparent pieces are placed
along the top of the wall to allow
sunlight to enter the space.
This wall is increased by a module
of two feet in order to create a
sloped roof, providing shade
for the bikes and throughout
the shelter.
Panel Connection Details
Xeriscaping: By using native plants in the landscaping,
we will reduce the cost of maintenance. By locating the
plants strategically around the shelter, water shed from the
roof during rainfall will aid in plant care and reduce water
loss.
Solar Panel: The inclusion of solar power will allow
the shelter to produce clean energy. The panel will pay
for itself over time through a reduction or elimination of
electricity use from the power grid. The solar panel will
be used to provide light inside the shelter in conjunction
with a motion sensor so that the light does not remain
on unnecessarily. The addition of light will indicate to
bus drivers when shelters are occupied, increasing
safety for everyone.
Permeable Pavement: By using pave-
ment consisting of 96% recycled material, we are
greatly reducing the environmental impact. This
pavement allows for better management of
stormwater drainage and reduces pollution in
bodies of water.
The sloped roof allows
for orientations of the
solar panel that will
provide the best results
in terms of power gain.
This wall will always be oriented so
that the glass provides visibility into
and out of the shelter. Bus drivers
will be able to identify if a shelter is
occupied, and occupants will see
when a bus is arriving.
Community involvement is a primary commitment of the shelter design. There are a wide variety of opportuni-
ties for local artists, children, and other community members, who will be encouraged to join in and incorporate their artwork into the panels. By
sharing in the design, Columbia as a whole will contribute to the creation and maintenance of the shelters. Because of the flexibility of the panels and the ease in changing them,
artwork panels can be rotated to different stops around the city or purchased after their retirement from use by those excited to share in this community project.
Businesses can also take advantage of panels, or even entire shelters, for advertising by purchasing the affordable panels. Schools will have wonderful op-
portunities to incorporate their students artwork into the shelters located nearby, and parents would eventually be able to purchase a panel their child de-
signed to save as a fantastic memento. The opportunity for the pubilc and businesses to purchase panels will increase cmmunity involvement, and significantly reduce the cost of the
shelter.
Sun and Wind: Shelters can be oriented
according to sun and wind patterns to provide
the optimal environment for users. Through con-
scious arrangement, various shelters will offer
security during cold months and great breezes
via cross ventilation during warm months.
The optional flat roof allows for art-
work and advertisements, with
open spaces for continued incorpo-
ration of ventilation.
Aluminum panels are made from
LEED certified recycled materials
and will sit flush with the module,
increasing weather resistance and
protecting users.
North Orientation
The emphasis in our design is
modularity. The entire shelter
consists of only two
components. Each panel can be
customized based on the desires for
each shelter, whether that is with
artwork, glass, mesh, or just open.
This makes it easy to incorporate
future technology, should funding
become available. This also allows for
expansion. Should the shelter get
too small, simply add another
row of panels to each side
and extend as needed!

Panels will be powder
coated to match the
color of the bus line for
aesthetics and easy
wayfinding.

WITH A NEW PUBLIC TRANSIT ROUTE BEING IMPLEMENTED THIS UP-
COMING FALL, COMOCONNECT WAS IN NEED OF A NEW AND INNO-
VATIVE BUS SHELTER DESIGN. OUR OBJECTIVE OF THE BUS SHELTER
WAS TO CREATE A DESIGN THAT WAS SUSTAINABLE, ECONOMICAL
AND ESTHETICALLY PLEASING. THE MODULARITY OF THE DESIGN
ALLOWS FOR PERSONALIZATION SUCH AS COMMUNITY ARTWORK
OR BUSINESS MARKETING. THE MATERIALS THAT ARE USED TO
CREATE THE SPACE ARE ALSO EASILY REPLACABLE IF DAMAGE WERE
TO OCCUR AND AT A LOW COST. THIS DEISGN WILL CREATE A LAST-
ING AND SAFE ENVIRONMENT THAT WILL AFFECT THE COMMUNITY
IN A POSITIVE WAY.
The concrete is made out of 35%
fy ash which is residue generat-
ed in combustion of coal. The
concrete panels can also be
easily decorated with communi-
ty artwork.
The metal decking is 80% recy-
cled steel from a local distrubut-
er in Jeferson City. The decking
stabilizes the roofng panels.
SHOWN BELOW ARE THE FOUR DIFFERENT ORIENTATIONS
THAT THE SHELTER COULD POSSIBLY BE FACING. THE
PLACEMENT OF THE CONCRETE PANELS AND SOLID STEEL
BACK PANELING BLOCKS ANY WIND, RAIN OR SNOW FROM
ENTERING THE SHELTER. ADDITIONAL PANELING CAN ALSO
BE EASILY ADDED BECAUSE OF THE MODULARITY OF THE
DESIGN.
