Two simple projects will show all the required steps to perform a general
dynamic analysis. Different impact loads will be applied at the top of a 6.5m
height steel column.
To get a sufficient number of vibration modes and frequencies, we split this
column into 10 pieces. The more vibration modes you get, the more accurate
the analysis and results are.
Example 1 One Impact Load
A 10 kN dynamic load is applied at the top of this column, towards the
positive global x axis.

Project Configuration
Enter the following general dynamic loading parameters on the Analysis
tab of the Project Configuration dialog box: Close the dialog box.

General Dynamic Load Diagrams
Unitary dynamic load diagrams are available in the Loads / General Dynamic
Loads menu.
Open the General Dynamic Loads spreadsheet and insert a row.
Enter a name or number.
Double click the "Type" column and select a loading diagram among the
drop-down list.
Enter the number of cycles for this dynamic loading and specify required
intervals "dti".

Click OK.
Load Definitions Spreadsheet
Open the Loads Definition spreadsheet (Loads / Load cases
/Definition). The "Dead" load case is automatically created. Insert a row
and define the dynamic load case by selecting a "Dynamic" load type in the
"Type" column.

Select the Dynamic tab. Double-click the "Accelerogram" cell and select
the name of the dynamic load diagram (Impact).

There is only one dynamic load diagram; therefore the starting time is not
required. The starting time is used when dynamic loads are applied at different
time or in different directions, or both.

Load Combinations
Select Loads /Load Combinations / Definition. Insert two rows.

The first load combination includes the structure dead load and the impact
load. The second one is the Mass load combination and consists of the
dead load only. It is required for the modal analysis.
Select the Load Factors tab. Insert rows. Enter load factors and select the
appropriate load case in the drop-down list.

Click OK.
Applying the Impact Load
The dynamic load will be graphically applied at the top of the column.
Select the Load Case mode and select the Impact load case title on the
Activation toolbar.
Select the Node element and double-click the top node to open the Forces
on Nodes spreadsheet.
Enter a load of 10 kN (global x-axis) and click OK.

Modal Analysis
Launch the modal analysis by clicking this icon.
Select the "Mass" load combination in the Modal Analysis dialog box and
specify a number of 15 vibration modes.
Launch the analysis by clicking the "Analyze" button.

Vibration Modes, Frequencies and Damping
Select Results / Modal/Spectral/ Frequencies & Vibration Modes.
Look at the x and z columns. They represent modal contributions for
each main direction. The main horizontal vibration modes, which
contribute the most, are mode 1 and 2.

Damping
The default damping is set to 5%. To modify the damping percentage, select
the whole column and enter another value. (Use the Replace function of
contextual menu.) Launch the modal analysis again.
Static Analysis (Time History)
Select the loaded node (or select none to study all nodes) and launch a
static analysis , which is a time history one.
If you do not select node(s) before launching the static analysis, Advance
Design America will calculate displacements for all the nodes. In our
example, we did not select any node because the project is very small.
A time history analysis is done according to the direction of impact load.
Note The time history analysis takes more time than other types of analysis. The
longer the duration of load application is, the longer the analysis will be.
The Load Combination mode is automatically selected when the time history
analysis is completed.
Select the Dyn+dead load combination and display the deflection.

Time History Results - Node Displacements in Time
Select the Dyn+dead load combination on Activation toolbar.
Select Results / Time History/ Node Displacements in Time. Enter
node number 1 and click the "Reading" button.

Click the "Spreadsheet" button to view the results in the form of a spreadsheet.

Differential Displacements between Nodes
If you want to view differential displacements between two nodes, they must
be part of the node selection (studied nodes) before running the time history
analysis.
Enter the node numbers in appropriate fields and click the "Reading" button.

Example 2 2 Impact Loads
We are going to add a second impact load of 30 kN towards direction z. It will
hit the top of the column 1 second after the first impact.
General Dynamic Loads spreadsheet
The sinusoidal load diagram is chosen for the second impact.

Load Cases
Add the Impact_z load case and specify a dynamic type of load.

Specify the starting time for the second impact load.

Apply Impact_z Load
Select the Impact_z load on activation toolbar and double-click the node 1,
at the top of the column.

Enter a force of 30 kN acting towards the positive global z-axis. Close the
spreadsheet.

Load Combinations
Add the Impact_z load case to the load combination.

Modal Analysis
Launch the modal analysis, as done in the first example.
Static Analysis (Time History)
Launch the static analysis . All nodes are studied.
Select the Dead + dyn(2) load combination.
