Project Title: Mapping Our School for New Students
Created by: Lori Anderson Class: Special Education Classes 5th and 6th grades
Project Description Students in 5th and 6th grade Special Education classes will mark computer labs, library, restrooms, gym, lunch room, office, playgrounds and locations of support services to create a map of the school and school grounds enabling them to get to know the school and its resources based on the waypoints.
Community Issue or Problem Selected
-How project evolved? New Students to Carl Sandburg will need to learn where the important areas and resources are located within the school.
The teacher and students will work together with community and school faculty to create a map of the school and the grounds to acquaint new students and their parents to the school.
Community Partner(s) (1) Community members who will volunteer to let the students use their GPS devices (2) School staff and instructors in the areas that the students will map the required locations in the school.
Project Objectives
Students will learn the functions of GPS, basics of mapping with GPS and create a map of the school. Students and teacher will work with community and school partners to create the map by following coordinates of the points of locations for resources in the school. The map will be available to students, their parents, and community. The map would be used to acquaint new students and their parents to the school.
Utah Core Standards/Objectives
Mathematical Practices from the Utah Core Standard: 1. Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them 5. Use appropriate tools strategically 6. Attend to precision
Essential Question(s)
-Spatial Issue What are the various resources on the school grounds and building and their relationship to each other in the school building? Where can students play, eat, etc..? Which areas should students not be in? What areas are important to their learning and will be used on daily basis? Where are support services providers located? Where is the office located? Where do they turn in their lunch money?
Assessments (rubrics, scoring guides) (1) Students will produce a school map marked correctly. (2) Students will be assessed by informal teacher observations
Project Products
Create a map of the school with important student locations, grade level location areas, and resource service providers for new students entering Carl Sandburg Elementary using GPS units and waypoints.
Project Timeline
(include a step by step Procedures) Teacher: 1. Map points on GPS and save on that device 2. Download and save into Garmin Base Camp in folder (Label waypoints by color) 3. Plug student GPS units 4. Clear all existing waypoints on each student GPS units 5. Download folder of waypoint onto student GPS units. 6. Produce blank map of Carl Sandburg Elementary School with classrooms but no labels. 7.On blank maps, put colors of waypoints in different order so that groups dont go to same place. 8. Make first waypoint a practicewaypoint that whole class participates in and shows understanding. 9. Pair of students and proceed with activity.
Students: 1. Discuss the proper use of the GPS unit. 2. Learn the function keys on the GPS unit 3. Learn the basics of using a GPS unit (specifically where to go and waypoints.. Show video http://gmapk12.wikispaces.com/Instructional+VideosGPS 4. Assign to work with partners. 5. Students will practice as a class finding the Practice waypoint so they know how to follow the GPS and show understanding 6. Students will walk the school finding the important resources using the waypoints that are already entered in the GPS systems. 7. Using a blank map of the school, they will mark on the map the important resources from the waypoints given in the GPS taken from the list given.
Resources Needed GPS devices, blank map of Carl Sandburg Building, Skills Required Use and knowledge of GPS units, following directions, working with partners, knowledge of how to collect data needed, marking a map and reading waypoints.
Project Team Member Roles Teacher(s): (1) Instructing and modeling for students on how to use GPS unit. (2) Instruct how to mark an accurate map.
Students: Following directions, using GPS, following compass, collecting data, and creating map
Partner(s): Supply GPS devices, Teaching, modeling and help students create map.
Celebration/Presentation Students will present the map and share what they have learned about our school to new students. During parent night, students can share and use their map with their parents.
Project Evaluation
Students created an accurate map of the school grounds containing the important resources and locations that were given for the GPS.
Use GPS units--Students will use them to find the area and perimeter of the school and classroom in area calculation mode when learning how to solve for area and perimeter of shapes.
Use story maps--Students will use story maps to find a location that they would like to travel to. They will build their own story map. .http://storymaps.arcgis.com
