This article explains different problems in a classroom while a second language is
taught. Nation suggests two principles that can be use to solve classrooms
problems. The first one is pedagogical solutions and the second one is having
more than one possible solution depending on student's problems.
Nation recommends giving the knowledge before making the task because this
way it will be easier to learn. Also working in groups will make them more
confident.
Other helpful solution is to change the circumstance of the task. This way the
learner will find more natural to use L2 than his L1. Learners might not find the
point of using L2 so it is teachers' job to change the students' attitude. It can be by
teaching the goals of using the second language to encourage the learner.
Showing them the value of English with activities is another way to change the
attitude.
Trying to seek a solution in a collaborative way can make learners find a change of
attitude by themselves and is another possible solution to make changes in
classroom while learning the second language.
Also, learners should speak in English during activities but they usually forget it
and speak in their first language; therefore, author proposes set up a monitor
system.
A very good technique to develop their fluency in class is making groups among
students where they feel more comfortable to speak.
Maybe, speaking in L1 can be a problem when someone wants to learn a L2, but
sometimes it is very useful. For example, to explain a task when learners do not
understand or to explain the values of the task. This is a good method to clarify and
negotiating the procedure, but the teacher must see what happen in this situation.
As well, in the article are mentioned four directions of dealing whit classroom
issues in a systematic way, from a proficiency viewpoint, from a circumstances
viewpoint, from a attitude viewpoint and seeing it not always as a problem and
turning the seeming disadvantage to an advantage, (Nation, 1997).
This article mentioned a variety of ways of how teach a L2 and how to use a L1 to
help the understanding of it using a systematic approach.
