Where you innovate, how you innovate, and what you innovate are design problems.

Tim Brown, 2005
Innovation is driven by three forces:
Business Technology People.
Business investigates the viability of new products or
services;
Technology explores the feasibility of new products or
services;
People judge the desirability and usability of new
products or services.

design thinking ?
What is
design thinking best describes a specific approach to innovation. It is an approach
largely ignored by business professionals, educators, and even many designers.

Roger Martin, Rotman School of Management

Design thinking starts with empathy.
Design thinking is multidisciplinary and
collaborative.
Design thinking is iterative and visual.

Project statement
The design of a Design Innovation Center , Bangalore is a thesis proposal which has taken its shape from the
future plans of the National design Council to start innovation hubs as well as center for excellence of design as a
part of National Design Policy [Govt Of India 2007].
This will be a platform where graduates with intrest in design can learn, experiment and research enableing
knowledge to be translated into useful products and services that can be commercialised and marketed. This can
act as a bussiness incubator by providing the resources and services for recently graguated entrepreneurs in the
fields of architecture ,art, design and engineering.
This can be consireded as a futurustic form of National inistitute of design which is an initiative in similar line but
more focus on design education and research , were the DIC will have its role in practical training , product branding ,
design bussiness incubation a nd various other activity schems were sudents as well as faculty will have a hands on
experence with industry. Mutinational companies will be allowed to set up their own bussiness incubators on the
campus. The kind of design graguation programs DIC offering will be decided only after live case studies.

Inference
The building form as well as the spaces describes what innovation is all about.
The architect has suceeded in giving an imagery which speaks to the world about design
innovation.
Huge open spaces which imparts freel of freedom and flexiblility to work any where.
Spaces like media walk , thought corridors keeps designers inspired and fresh.
Bioclimatic techniques used in the building makes it a vision beyond tha basic program.

User study
Being a design innovation center there is only one major kind of users Designers in the role
of students as well as teachers. So to designing a space for them ,analysis of their
behaviours, the designing process, the kind of tools they use , the kind of atmosphere they
prefer etc have great relevance.
To produce an aesthetically pleasing , practically useful and well functioning end products a
designer have to deal with both precise and vague ideas, should call for systematic and chaotic
thinking, need both imaginative thought as well as mechanical calculation. Most of design fields
proceed through the middle of this spectrum of design activity.
the designing process
analysis of their behaviours and activities

Their work spaces will be always
messy with bill boards , sketches ,
design tools
Their interactions and discussions can
happen any where.
They may work in

inferences
An intimate work space is essential for some stages of design process
Flexibility in work spaces , like one shpold be able to work any where..
Interactive/ meeting spaces are essential preferably informal
