CHAPTER 6
EDUCATIONAL ATTITUDES
Every country has different educational attitudes. In America, student life is complicated.
Many activities that are did during the first week of each quarter or semester. Those activities
such as registering for classes, build of campus adaptation, buying books, adding and dropping
classes, and playing fees are confusing for everyone. It is the little time for students to anticipate
what they will later encounter in the classroom during that busy period. They must adapt to new
classroom norms, such whether praying in the classroom is forbidden or not, eating and talking
in the classroom and so on. It is not always easy to understand a new educational system.
There are many kinds of diversity in education. Because of diverse teaching methods and
non-standardized curricula, no two courses are identical. The classroom atmosphere is also
different between private and public school. Every course has different requirement and
expectation. But the most expectation that expected by many courses is classroom participation.
A professors teaching style so determined weather students become active or passive. Some
professors prefer control the classroom so that the students became passive. Besides Some
professors prefer to be center in the class by giving lecture and others like to encourage students
to ask and give opinion. All of those are depend on the college elements. Some college courses
are applied rather than theoretical, for example in sociology, and psychology classes. But, some
college applied traditional method for teaching science or mathematics.
The relationship between teacher and students may be close or not. The casual professor
is not necessarily a poor one and is still respected by students. Professor may establish social
relationships with students outside of the classroom, but in the classroom they maintain the
instructors role. Students must realize that when a teachers role changes, they must
appropriately adapt their behavior and attitudes. The ideal student is considered to be one who is
motivated to learn for the sake of learning, not the one interested only getting high grades.
Students must independent in learning. The professor would not give all information about the
university. Professors will help students who need it, but prefer that their students not be overly
dependent on them. If student has problems with the classroom work, they should either
approach a professor during office hours or make an appointment.
Ideally, the teacher-student relationship at universities is characterized by trust. The
honor system, imposed by teacher and the university, demands that student be honest in all
areas of school work. Cheating on test or plagiarizing in written test is absolutely prohibited. Students
who cheat may lose the respect of other students, particularly those who study for exams and work
independently. The relationship between students can be cooperative or competitive. The students can be
competitive because they want to entrance superior graduate school. A high grade point average is needed
for entrance to superior graduate schools. In addition when facing a competitive job market, graduates
may be judged on the basis of their grade point average and faculty recommendation.
