Safety Scholarships
Guidelines for Applicants
OPITO is offering two OPITO Piper Alpha
Memorial MSc Safety Scholarships.
The scholarships are open to all students
wishing to commence the full time MSc in
Safety & Reliability ngineering for Oil & !as
in September "#$%. &Please note that the
scholarships are not open to students wishing
to commence the part'time programme(
In addition) the scholars* dissertations must
address the issue of +safety in the oil and gas
industry*.
Please note that any number of scholarships
can be applied for; however priority will be
given to students not already in receipt of a
scholarship Students are not able to hold
more than one corporate scholarship at any
one time
ach scholarship is ,alued at -.)### for the
one year duration of the postgraduate degree.
The scholarships will contribute towards the
students* fees and maintenance costs.
The dissertation of the scholarship recipient
obtaining the highest mar/ will recei,e a
further -0##.
All students meeting the criteria abo,e)
regardless of nationality) are eligible to apply
for the OPITO Piper Alpha Memorial MSc
Safety Scholarships.
To be considered for an OPITO Piper Alpha
Memorial MSc Safety Scholarship you will
need to ha,e applied to the 1ni,ersity of
Aberdeen for a place on the MSc in Safety &
Reliability ngineering for Oil & !as degree
course starting in September "#$%. To be
awarded an OPITO Piper Alpha Memorial
MSc Safety Scholarship you must recei,e and
then firmly accept an unconditional offer of a
place on the MSc in Safety & Reliability
ngineering for Oil & !as at the 1ni,ersity of
Aberdeen.
The Scholarship 2ommittee) comprising the
3ead of School of ngineering) nominated
course leaders) and a representati,e of the
4e,elopment Trust) will consider the
applications) shortlist the candidates and ma/e
the awards. In ma/ing the decision) the
selection panel will ta/e into account the
applicant*s educational bac/ground and
achie,ements) other rele,ant information gi,en
in their application form) personal statement)
25 and the statement from your referee.
The scholarship will be sub6ect to the
scholarship recipient successfully completing
their degree to the satisfaction of the School.
The scholarship will lapse if the scholar ceases
to study the MSc in Safety & Reliability
ngineering for Oil & !as degree programme)
does not complete a dissertation lin/ed to
safety in the oil & gas industry) or lea,es the
1ni,ersity of Aberdeen. 7here a scholarship
recipient is re8uired to repeat any part of their
programme because they failed to reach the
academic re8uirements of the programme)
payment will not be made until progression has
been made9 resumption of the scholarship will
be based on indi,idual circumstances and will
be at the discretion of the 3ead of School. The
scholarship can only be held by students of the
1ni,ersity : they cannot be transferred to
another institution.
The 1ni,ersity will award the OPITO Piper
Alpha Memorial MSc Safety Scholarships to
applicants who ha,e good academic potential)
and who are li/ely to be successful in their
chosen degree course. The Scholarships will
be awarded on the basis of academic merit
and personal characteristics Academic
merit will be 6udged on academic performance.

Reference. It should preferably be completed
by an academic member of staff from the
uni,ersity where you studied your
undergraduate degree who is familiar with
your academic achie,ements. Alternati,ely) if
you are not coming straight from an
undergraduate degree) someone from your
place of wor/ who has a super,isory or
managerial role and who is familiar with your
academic achie,ements would be a satisfactory
referee.

The form for your Reference should be gi,en
to the person you ha,e nominated. The person
writing the Reference should gi,e it bac/ to
you) either open or in a sealed en,elope. It is
then your responsibility to ensure that the
reference is enclosed with your application.
The Reference pro,ided will form part of the
scholarship selection process. It is helpful if
the Referee e>plicitly deals with the
Scholarship Selection criteria and refers to
information detailed by the applicant in the
Scholarship Application.
