accounting, for which a self%contained

"he plant is an organisational
unit of logistics which su#%divides the
company from the production,
procurement, plant maintenance and
transportation planning point of view.
A storage location is an
organisational unit that allows you to
distinguish #etween the material stoc$s
within a given plant. "he quantity
based inventory management (IM) is
carried out at the storage location
level.
"he storage location is the lowest level of the
inventory management if the SAP
warehouse management '()* is not set.
"he spatial division of a warehouse, the
allocation of the storage #ins and the
transportation activities within the
warehouse are processed via the

"he organisational and physical features
of a warehouse comple& are consolidated
under the warehouse number. "he
entire warehouse structure is managed
under one 'or more* warehouse
num#er's*.
"he warehouse types are directly
assigned to the warehouse num#ers.
Storage type
A storage type is a storage area,
storage facility or storage +one that can
#e defined for a warehouse num#er in the
(). A uni,ue area within a warehouse
or warehouse comple& that is identified
#y the loaded space and the
organisational structure and consists of
one or more storage #ins is handled here.
-ou can define several storage types for
every storage num#er.
-ou can, for e&ample, define the following

interim storage areas, capacity chec$s
are not re,uired and putaway or pic$ing
strategies are not specified.

storage areas. .enerally all the storage
#ins that have certain common properties
such as storage #ins for 8fast moving
items9 or 8slow moving items9 close to
the goods issue +one are included in one
storage area.

7ach storage type comprises of a row of
storage areas that are indicated as
storage bins in the ().
A storage #in is smallest addressa#le unit
of space that can #e activated in a
storage type.
Storage #ins are specified through co%
ordinates that refer to the e&act position
in the warehouse where the goods can #e
stored.
Storage #ins are assigned to the storage
types/ storage areas in the ().

Storage Section
In (arehouse )anagement '()*, a
storage section is an organi+ational
su#division of a storage type that groups
together storage #ins with similar
features for the purpose of putting away
stoc$. "he criteria for grouping #ins can
#e defined on a user%individual #asis, e.g.
heavy parts, #ul$y materials, fast%moving
items, slow%moving items.

e.g. upper storage #ins, lower storage

#ins etc. "he storage #in type plays an
important role during the optimisation of
the system search for a storage #in in
conte&t with the pallet type in case of the
putaway strategy. -ou can, for e&ample,
define the putaway strategy in such a
way that the large industry pallets can #e
put away in especially large #ins and
smaller pallets in small #ins.

Storage unit
A storage unit is a logical grouping of
one or more material ,uantities that can
#e managed in a warehouse as a unit
that are grouped together 'incl. pallet or
container*. "he material ,uantities are
managed at storage unit level while using
the storage unit management. "he
material ,uantities are managed at the
storage #in level without storage unit
management. A unique number is
assigned to all storage units across the
warehouses.
"he S> num#er is used as /andling >nit
'/>* in osch.
In contrast to the storage unit, it contains
the additional data on the pac$ing
material.

A Handling Unit (HU) is a physical
grouping of materials consisting of
Pac$ing material
'e.g. Pallets, #o&, shrin$ foil, container*
and
.oods 'which are transported, stored and
consumed etc.*
A /andling >nit has a uni,ue
identification num#er that helps in
reading all the information.

"he storage unit type is a $ey #y which
you classify storage units. "he system
can recommend an optimum storage #in
during put%away with the help of the

What is Material Master ata?
"he )aterial )aster data#ase often
referred to simply as the
Material )aster, comprising of the
entire individual material master
records stored in the system, contains
descriptions of all materials
that an enterprise procures, produces,
and $eeps in stoc$.
It is the central repository of information
on materials such as inventory levels for
the enterprise.
"he integration of all material data in a
single materials data#ase
eliminates the pro#lem of data
redundancy and permits the data to #e
used not only #y Purchasing, #ut #y other
applications such as
Inventory )anagement, )aterials
Planning and =ontrol, Invoice
Berification and so on.
?nly when the relevant storage views are
maintained in )aterial master data, it
#ecomes possi#le to record and manage
the stoc$.

grouping certain partial ,uantities

Pic$ing area is a section within the
storage type where all pic$ing activities
are carried out in a same way.
"emp conditions! can mention the temp
conditions in which the material has to #e
stored.
Aa#el type! determines the way la#els are
created. I.e. la#els are preprinted #y
vendor or in the central factory

storage #ins in the warehouse. 7.g.
Pallets, containers etc.
Stoc$ Placement! Cetermines the storage
type to #e selected #y system and define
the priority in which they are accessed for
stoc$ placement.
Storage section! Aogical or physical
su#division of storage type. (e can group

to one storage section li$e section of
#ul$y materials and so.

shelves where similar pallets or
containers are stac$ed. /ere we can
define how the material could #e stac$ed.
Special )ovement indicator! this is used
to separate special posting procedure for
a material from std process. 7g.
.enerally the material goes to an interim
storage after .R. (ith this indicator, we
can set up the material to move directly
to stores
2%step pic$ing! >sing this first the item is
removed from storage area #ased on
re,uirement and then moved/ distri#uted
to the interim storage area.
If we want to add a material with same
characteristic to the e&isting stoc$, of
same material then we need to chec$ this
indicator.
