PREFACE.
When I,
four
years ago,
came
to
a
determination
to
go
through
all
our
materia
medica,
and
not, as formerly,
exclusively
deal with the
more important medicines,
it
became
immediately
clear to
me
that
our
handbooks of
materia medica
(excepting
the
Encyclopedia
of T. F.
Allen)
did not embrace the whole list of
homoeopathic
remedies. The excellent handbook of Professor Allen
contained the
greatest
number,
while the text-books
of Drs.
Cowperthwaite
and Jessen
(the
latter also
a
good
book for the wants of
practitioners)
have been
found
more
serviceable in size for
daily employment.
I
accordingly
took the text-book of
Cowperthwaite as
my
basis,
and added to this
a great
number of
notes,
which the author intends
to
embody
in the
new
edition.
The
remedies, that
were
not found
by me
in the text- book
of
Cowperthwaite,
I in
particular brought
together
to form
a
text-book of materia medica and
therapeutics
of the
rare homoeopathic
medicines. A
physician, by
means
of the text-book of
Cowperthwaite
and with the
help
of the
present Supplement,
will
now
have the whole
homoeopathic
materia medica at his
disposal.

but its value is not confined

differs so
much from
ordinary
chapters
on that
subject,

commend it. It does
not follow the b^ten track of
time-worn

to the most advanced discoveries in
Hygiene.
The references to
bread, tea, coffee,cooking, water, air,sunlight,exer- cise,
clothing, bathing,"c.,are replete
with original remarks such as we have never
seen
in
any
domestio or professional
work of itis

generalities
with which most authors deal. Dr. Buddock

clearly
and
minutely
all the smaller
points relating

is far better than similar
chapters
in
more pretentious
works.

chapters
on the Accessories in the Treatment of
Disease. The
majority
of students
go
out into
practice

very
nebulous ideas
relative to the
importance
of these accessories, and
they
finally
learn
nearly
all of
them from old
women and nurses.
Dr. Buddock
givesplain and brief directions
as
to when and where
they
are needed, and in what
mey
should
consist,
when used as
adjuncts
to Homoeopathic treatment.
