(MICRO WAVE AND RADAR ENGINEERING)
Time: 3hours Max.Marks:60
Answer any five questions
All questions carry equal marks
- - -
1.a) Given the field expressions of a wave, how do you calculate surface currents in a
generalized waveguide per unit length? Explain with suitable expressions.
b) Discuss about Poynting vector. How do you express real and complex powers in
terms of EM fields?

2.a) Derive expression for the reflection coefficient when a uniform plane wave is
incident obliquely at the interface of two different media (Assume perpendicular
polarization).
b) A plane wave in free space (z u) is incident normally on a large block of
material with relative permittivity of 12, and relative permeability of 3
(conductivity is zero) that occupies z u. If E = Sucos (t -z) V/m directed
along y axis, find frequency, SWR, and average power density of the
transmitted wave.

3.a) Design a five element broadside array having a total array length of /4 (spacing
between the elements d = /16). The side lobe level is 25.8 dB down the main
lobe level. Assume necessary data.
b) Derive the expression for radiation resistance of an infinitesimal dipole &
calculate the radiation resistance for half-wave dipole.

4.a) State and explain Equivalence and induction theorems with suitable expressions.
b) Discuss about the usefulness of the theorems as mentioned in (a) with suitable
examples.

5.a) Derive the TM mode field expressions for a wave propagating along a dielectric
slab guide.
b) Show that the TM surface impedance is inductive and TE surface impedance is
capacitive.

6. a) Derive the suitable expression for resonant frequency of TE
101
mode in
rectangular type cavity resonator.
b) What is Q of a cavity? Give the procedure to calculate Q of a cavity, given the
field expressions of a mode. How is it calculated when cavity walls are perturbed?

7.a) Give the concept of transmission through apertures.
b) Discuss about Ritz procedure.

8.a) Prove that the electric and magnetic fields of a uniform plane wave are not in
time phase when the wave is propagating in a lossy-dielectric medium. Derive
suitable expressions.
b) Write about the following:
i) Green function.
ii) Surface guided waves.
