ADVANCED IC ENGINES
(THERMAL ENGINEERING)
Time: 3hours Max.Marks:60
Answer any five questions
All questions carry equal marks
- - -

1.a) Suggest reasons why multi cylinder engines prove more attractive than single
cylinder engines once the total displaced volume exceeds a few hundred cubic
centimeters.
b) Explain why the brake mean effective pressure of a naturally aspirated diesel
engine is lower than that of a naturally aspirated spark ignition engine. Explain
why the bmep is lower at the maximum rated power for a given engine than the
bmep at the torque.

2. What are the reasons for expansion stroke pressure for the engine fall below the
fuel air cycle pressure? Explain each reason in detail.

3.a) Explain various scavenging arrangements with the help of neat sketches.
b) Define trapping efficiency, scavenging efficiency and purity.

4. Define and explain Swirl. Explain Swirl generation during induction and Swirl
measurement.

5.a) Explain most commonly used parameters to characterize energy release aspects.
b) What are the causes of cycle by cycle variations?

6. Describe the sequence of processes which must occur before the liquid fuel in the
injection system in a direct injection compression ignition engine is fully burned.

7. Explain various types of catalytic converters.

8. Write a note on
a) Modification in IC engines to suit Biofuels.
b) HCCI engines.
