ANALYSIS AND DESIGN OF SHELLS AND FOLDED PLATES
(STRUCTURAL ENGINEERING)
Time: 3hours Max. Marks: 60
Answer any five questions
All questions carry equal marks
- - -

1.a) Discuss the merits and demerits of various methods of analysis of shells.
b) Obtain the stresses for membrane stress resultants for a circular cylindrical shell
under dead load.

2. Derive the equations of equilibrium, stress-strain relations, moment-curvature
relations and Flugges simultaneous equations for the bending theory of cylindrical
shells.

3.a) Derive the Schorers differential equation for the cylindrical shells.
b) What are the advantages of the beam theory of cylindrical shells and write the
assumptions in the beam theory.

4. Design a single short cylindrical shell without edge beams for the following data.
Span of the shell =12 m
Radius =22 m
Semi central angle =36
0

Thickness =75 mm.

5.a) What are the different parts of a Conoid? What are the advantages of using
conoidal shells?
b) Explain the principles of design of a parabolic conoid.

6. How do you find the stresses in the spherical shell for the following conditions?
i) Under own weight
ii) Concentrated load at the crown
iii) Under snow load

7. Explain the step by step procedure for the analysis of folded plates by Simpsons
method.

8. A triangular folded plate roof consists of two triangles, each with a horizontal width
of 5 m and height 2.5 m. The span of the roof is 18 m and is having a thickness of
120 mm. The live load on the roof is 0.8 kN/m
2
