Introduction

This was an assignment for a technical writing class at the University of Texas at
San Antonio during the Summer 2014 term. Each student was required to start up a fake
business. Each student was required to come up with an abbreviated business plan. The
company Purify designs tumbler cups that filter water as the user drinks from it, then a
Purify straw is given to an impoverished child in developing countries. Purify is a
portable water purifier that enables anyone to have safe, clean water. We build these
devices and sell them through our online store, and then we distribute the straws to
different countries. In the sections below, the abbreviated business plan.

Vision, Mission, and Values


In the next year, we plan to expand the distribution of our Purify straws. Our
strategy will include circulating our Purify straws to two additional countries. Our focus
on growth will require needed attention to our customers and new marketing techniques.
Our products Purify tumbler cup and Purify straw give us a competitive advantage by
being the only product around with our high quality. Our online website has put our
product in the grasp of consumers. Once a customer orders our product, it will be shipped
from our Houston manufacturing headquarters. Our annual sales are 260 million dollars
and our annual profits put us at making 13 million dollars. Our vision is to provide our
customers with the best shopping experience from beginning to end, with easy-to-follow
instructions, secure payment methods, and fast, quality delivery. Our company will strive
to expand our growth and exceed to donate our product all over the world.
For our company to expand, it is essential to revamp our mission and values. Our
mission is to deliver value by developing customized, purifying products, while focusing
on what is important: customers, our people, and technology. With every Purify tumbler
cup purchase, Purify will give a Purify straw to a person in need: one for one. As a
company we would like to be able to donate our product to over 60 countries.
Unfortunately, 783 million people do not have access to clean water, this is why Purify is
doing everything we can to grow our company.
As a company, we want our customers and competitors to know what to expect
from us at all times. Due to this, our company will stand by our core values daily P-
passionate people, U- unity with our customers and employees, R- responsible citizens, I-
integrity, F- filtration 100%, Y- yielding to aid all. These values make up who Purify is
as a company. By being passionate people, we will be able to care for our customers and
work together to make our goals happen. By unifying as a company and with our
customers we will be able to be more effective in receiving donations. Realizing the need
for our product in order to assist those in need reflects that we are responsible citizens.
We maintain our integrity through our sincerity and virtue to our customers. Filtration
100% is what our product creates the opportunity to have filtered, clean water 100% of
the time. Yielding to aid all is remind us to comply with the requests and desires others
have for our product not everyone is lucky to have filtered water everywhere.

Funding Plan

Our senior staff has been formulated specific funding options that will secure our
initial requirements as we grow our company.

1. Purify will need to prepare a business plan to show investors the business
opportunities Purify will offer to each of them, Kasey Medchill, Kate Hamilton,
Neal Caffrey, and Matthew Mayfield will be in charge of creating and preparing
the business plan. This will take approximately one week. While creating the
business plan will not cost anything, Purify will pay its workers salary.
2. Purify will need to contact relatives for investment opportunities that will help
start our business, Kasey Medchill, Kate Hamilton, Neal Caffrey, and Matthew
Mayfield will be in charge of calling relatives and present the business plan. This
will take approximately one week. While the searching will not cost anything,
Purify will pay relatives who invest a 10% return on their investment.
3. Purify will need each of its board members to look at their network to gather
information needed to call each, Kasey Medchill, Kate Hamilton, Neal Caffrey,
and Matthew Mayfield will be in charge of looking at their networks and
gathering needed information. This will take approximately three days. While
looking at their networks will not cost anything, Purifys board members will be
compensated for their time through their salary.
4. Our company will apply to get a small business loan through traditional finance
institutions; Neal Caffrey will be in charge of negotiating a deal for a loan. This
will take approximately one month. While applying for a loan is free, once we
receive the loan we will have an 8 - 20% interest.
5. Purify will need to research different government grants that relate to our
business, Kasey Medchill, Kate Hamilton, and Neal Caffrey will be in charge of
researching. This will take approximately five days. While researching different
government grants will not cost anything, each member will be compensated for
their time.
6. Our organization will apply for government grants that are concerned with the
well being of clean water, Neal Caffrey will be in charge of applying for
government grants. This will take approximately four months. While applying for
the government grant is free, Neal will be paid $20 per hour of additional salary.
7. Purify will apply to open business credit cards for the board members, Kasey
Medchill, Kate Hamilton, and Neal Caffrey will be in charge of applying for the
credit cards. This will take approximately three days. Applying for business credit
cards will not cost anything.
8. Our company will contact Red McCombs and meet with him to show him the
business plans, Kasey Medchill and Kate Hamilton will be in charge of contacting
and meeting with Red McCombs. This will take approximately two weeks.
Contacting and meeting with him will be free but preparing for the meeting, our
workers will be compensated.
9. Our organization will locate capital firms so that we can decide where to call,
Kate Hamilton will be in charge of locating firms. This will take approximately

four days. Locating capital firms will not cost anything, but Kate will be
compensated for her work through her salary.
10. Purify will call a bunch of firms to find interest in investing, Kate Hamilton and
Neal Caffrey will be in charge of making phone calls to various firms. This will
take approximately five days. Making a phone call will not cost anything, but
Kate and Neal will be compensated for her work through her salary.
11. Our company will present to firms to see if they are willing to invest their money,
Kasey Medchill, Kate Hamilton, and Neal Caffrey will be in charge of preparing
and presenting at meetings. This will take approximately one month. Presenting to
firms will not cost anything.
12. Purify will start contracting plans with capital firms who are willing to invest in
the company, Kasey Medchill and Kate Hamilton will be in charge of creating
contracts. This will take approximately two days. This will not cost the company
anything, although, Purify will compensate the workers through their salary.
13. Our organization will hire a consultant so we will have internal resources for
critical projects, Kasey Medchill and Kate Hamilton will be in charge of hiring.
Although, hiring a consultant is free, the consultant will be paid $30 an hour.
14. Purify will participate in crowd funding, to make it easy for anyone to invest,
Neal Caffrey and Matthew Mayfield will be in charge of creating our crowd
funding website. This will take approximately five days. This will cost
approximately $500 to make the crowd funding page.
15. Our company will contact special interest groups to see interest in helping with
our products, Kasey Medchill and Kate Hamilton will contact interest groups.
This will take approximately three days. This will not cost anything, but it will
take some time for our employees so they will be compensated through their
salary.

Setup Plan

Our senior staff has been formulated specific set up plans that will enable our
company to start up and begin running.

1. Purify will need to purchase accounting software, Kasey Medchill will be in
charge of purchasing the software. This will take approximately 30 minutes to
purchase and download. This will cost approximately $100.
2. Our company will need to print business cards for our board members to carry
with them at all times, Kate Hamilton will be in charge of creating and getting the
business cards printed. This will take approximately ten days to make sure the
business cards are perfect. Getting the business cards printed will cost around
$500.
3. Our organization will purchasing office equipment such as staplers, paper,
printers, machinery, copiers, pens, Kate Hamilton and Neal Caffrey will be in
charge of purchasing these items. This will take approximately two weeks to find
the best deals and purchase the items. The purchase of office equipment will cost
our company around $9,000.
4. Purify will need to get a business license so we will receive a tax id number,
Kasey Medchill and Neal Caffrey will be in charge of this. This will take
approximately two months to get completed. Receiving a business license will
cost our company around $600 per year.
5. Purify will schedule a meeting with an attorney to become a limited liability
company (LLC), Kate Hamilton will be in charge of this. This will take
approximately one month to get a meeting with an attorney. Getting a attorney to
help Purify become an LLC, it will cost about $900
6. Purify will meet with each employee to discuss if they would like stock options in
our company, Kate Hamilton and Matthew Mayfield will be in charge of meeting
with each employee. This will take approximately two weeks to complete. There
will be no cost in discussing stock options with employees.
7. Our company will set up a banking account in our name, Neal Caffrey will be in
charge of this. Getting all the paperwork together and setting up a banking
account will take approximately three days. The cost of opening a bank account
will not cost our company anything, although Neal will be compensated for his
time through his salary.
8. Purify will create a website explaining who we are, what we do, and have our
product available to be pre-purchased, Matthew Mayfield will be in charge of this
task. This will take approximately three weeks to complete. Creating a website
and adding features to it will cost us around $650.
9. Our organization will finding a real estate agent so we can begin to look for
properties, Kate Hamilton will be in charge of this. This will take approximately
five days to find an appropriate agent. Having an agent will cost our company
about 6% of the cost of the property we found.
10. Purify will begin touring properties once we receive a leasing agent so we can
decide on where we want our company to be built, Kasey Medchill and Kate

Hamilton will be in charge of this. This will take approximately one month to find
the perfect location. Touring properties will not cost our company anything.
11. Our company will negotiate leases once we find properties to our liking, Kasey
Medchill and Neal Caffrey will be in charge of this. This will take approximately
a week and a half to complete. Negotiating will not cost our company anything, it
will lower our final cost of purchasing the land.
12. Purify will start buying furniture such as desks, chairs, bookcases, and tables,
Kasey Medchill and Kate Hamilton will be in charge of this. This will take
approximately three weeks to purchase all the appropriate materials for our office.
Buying furniture for our office will cost our company around $5,000.
13. Our organization will attend tradeshows to begin networking and building up our
business, Kasey Medchill, Kate Hamilton, and Neal Caffrey will be in charge of
attending tradeshows. This will take approximately three months to build enough
network opportunities. The cost of attending tradeshows will cost our company
about $20 per person, per tradeshow we attend, but if we decide to have a booth it
will cost our company around $500 per tradeshow.
14. Purify will begin arranging utilities for the property we purchased so they can
begin to build, Kate Hamilton and Neal Caffrey will be in charge of this. This will
take approximately five days due to using Utility Connects services. Arranging
utilities for our building will not cost us anything, but once our building begins
needing the utilities it will cost us around $2,000 per month.
15. Our company will begin hiring employees to join our team and begin to train
them, Kasey Medchill and Kate Hamilton will be in charge of hiring and training
new employees. This will take approximately one month to complete the hiring
process. Hiring new employees will not cost our company anything, but once we
hire employees their salaries will range from $250,000 $350,000.

Marketing Plan

Our senior staff has been formulated specific marketing plans that will allow our
company to expand and be recognized. Our market requires a need for purifying tumbler
cups and straws due to the lack of sanitary water. People want our product for various
reasons, if its camping, to help change someones life, to be able to have sanitary water
wherever they travel. Our target prospects are both females and males, from all ages. Our
product is fairly inexpensive and we have an online store so our consumers are able to
purchase our product from anywhere around the world. Our company donates a straw per
tumbler purchased so our fairly inexpensive product makes our product available for
almost anyone to purchase. Purifys tumbler and Purifys straws are able to give our
customers clean, pure water. Our products can filter at least 1,000 liters of contaminated
water and removes a minimum of 99.9999% of waterborne bacteria; this shows our
product is long lasting and effective for our customers. As a company, we want our
customers and competitors to know what to expect from us at all times. Due to this, our

and stories of what our products can accomplish, Matthew Mayfield will be in
charge of this. This will take approximately three months of continuous marketing
through our website to be effective. This will not cost our company anything
besides the cost of running the website, which is $400 annually to run.
2. Our company will use our social media worker to make sure all of our social
media pages to be operating and being actively used, Susie Sue will be in charge
of this. This will take approximately two hours everyday to give our company the
publicity needed. This will not cost our company anything to make sure our social
media is running, but our social media worker will make $400,000 annual salary.
3. Purify will begin mailing out and handing out collateral material to show what our
product looks like and what our product can do for impoverished countries,
Matthew Mayfield will be in charge of this. This will take approximately three
months to create and print all materials and send them out to potential customers.
This will cost our company around $2,500.
4. Our company will work with other companies to provide an advisement at their
facilities and stores; Kate Hamilton will be in charge of this. This will take
approximately two months to get our advertisements ready and to distribute them

to the facilities and stores who agreed to showcase Purify. This will cost our
company $100 per month, per store/ facility.
5. Our organization will negotiate with radio hosts, TV networks, and outdoor
sporting event advertisers to get our product to be showcased by their company,
Matthew Mayfield will be in charge of this. This will take approximately four
months to locate and negotiate our product with each company to display our
product. This will cost Purify approximately $200,000 in advertising expenses.
6. Purify will start a YouTube channel showing how our product works and the
benefits of our product, Kate Hamilton and Matthew Mayfield will be in charge of
this. This will take approximately one month to create videos and upload them to
our YouTube channel. Getting a YouTube channel will not cost our company
anything.
7. Our company will purchase billboards to advertise our product and the good
cause; Matthew Mayfield and Neal Caffrey will be in charge of this. This will
take approximately three month to complete billboard designs and get them put
up. This will cost our company around $3,500 every six months.
8. Purify will have commercials shown on local and popular networks to show our
product, Matthew Mayfield will be in charge of this. This will make
approximately three months to shoot a commercial and get it to all the appropriate
networks. This will cost our company around $500,000 annually.
9. Our organization will set up a Facebook to display our product, a link to our
website, and will purchase advertisement space through Facebook, Susie Sue will
be in charge of setting this up. This will take approximately five days. This will
cost our company $350 per month for advertising space.
10. Purify will create a LinkedIn account to expand our network and expand our
advertising growth, Matthew Mayfield and Susie Sue will be in charge of this.
This will take approximately one day to set up our profile. Creating a LinkedIn
account will not cost our company anything.
11. Our company will set up a Twitter account so that we can expand our network
and start trending a hash tag for our company and the potential good we can
accomplish, Susie Sue will be in charge of setting up our twitter account. This
will take approximately two hours to create our account and follow other users.
This will not cost our company anything.
12. Purify will set up a buffer account so that we can schedule when to post important
information to all of our media sources, Susie Sue will be in charge of this.
Creating our account will take about an hour and setting up a schedule for our
buffer account will take approximately four hours a week. This will cost our
company around $300 annually.
13. Our organization will make digital brochures so our product can be seen online,
Matthew Mayfield will be in charge of this. This will take approximately two
weeks to complete the design and upload it to the Internet. This will cost our
company about $350 to create our digital brochure.
14. Purify will hire a graphic designer to perfect all our online webpages and our
digital brochures, Matthew Mayfield and Kate Hamilton will be in charge of
hiring a graphic designer. This will take approximately two weeks. Hiring a

will make $375,000 annually.
15. Our company will hire a content writer to write all of our information for our
online webpages and digital brochures, Kate Hamilton and Matthew Mayfield
will be in charge of hiring a content writer. This will take approximately two
weeks. This will not cost Purify any money to hire a content writer, but their
salary will be $500,000 annually.
