When you rst l earn to dri ve
a software program, i t i s usu-
al l y easi est to use the mouse.
As you become more of an
expert user, however, i t can
often be faster to use the key-
board to execute commands.
Al so, heavy software users who
rel y too much on mouse opera-
ti ons run the ri sk of devel opi ng
repeti ti ve strai n i njuri es.
The HP Advanced Desi gn Sys-
tem has many bui l t-i n hot keys
(Alt+f, for exampl e, opens the
Fi l e menu), and you can cus-
tomi ze hot keys to perform
operati ons that you use fre-
quentl y.
I n the Options menu of the
Mai n wi ndow or of a desi gn
wi ndow, the command
Menu/Toolbar Conguration
opens the Customi zati on di a-
l og box where you can custom-
i ze both hot keys and the tool
bar congurati on. I n the Mai n
wi ndow, you can customi ze
Mai n wi ndow operati ons; i n a
desi gn wi ndow, you can cus-
tomi ze hot keys for that type of
desi gn (schemati c and l ayout
are set i ndependentl y).

Use F7 to l aunch si mul ati ons,
and the escape key to termi -
nate commands.
F5 moves component text.
After movi ng a component, i t
remai ns sel ected. To desel ect
i t, just cl i ck on a bl ank spot i n
the schemati c.

Opening
an Example Schematic
from within a Project
1. I n a schemati c wi ndow,
choose Window > Schematic.
2. I n the new Schemati c wi n-
dow, choose File > Open.
3. I n the Open Desi gn di al og
box, cl i ck Browse.
4. Traverse the di rectory tree
to nd the desi red project
and desi gn.

to the Mai n wi ndow and
choose File > Copy Project.

l ati on i s to copy a schemati c from an
exampl e or from another project.
You can use any saved schemati c or
data di spl ay wi ndow as a templ ate,

examples di rectory.

wi ndow and di spl ay a schemati c from
an exampl e or a di fferent project.
Viewing a Data Display
Use the fol l owi ng steps to vi ew a data
di spl ay from an exampl e l e when you
al ready have a data di spl ay open:
1. I n a Data Di spl ay wi ndow, choose
File > New and open a new data di s-
pl ay wi ndow.
2. I n the new data di spl ay wi ndow,
choose File > Open.
3. Dene the directory, then click Filter to
display the projects in
