Course Description: An introduction to mineral dressing to pyro-, hydro-, and electro-metallurgy, and to adaptive metallurgy. Terminology, principles and processes. Flow diagrams, Overview of the Philippine metallurgical industry. Mineral economics
Course Objectives: The course aims to provide the students general/introductory knowledge on metallurgy from mineral processing to extractive metallurgy to adaptive metallurgy and to instill within the students the desire towards continuous learning and towards better writing and speaking skills.
Course Outline:
Topics Duration (hrs.) Overview of the metallurgical industry Specific Objectives: The student should be able to appreciate the relevance of the metallurgical engineering with a nations development.
Bronze Age, Iron Age and the development of nations. The Philippine minerals and metals industry.
3 Introduction to principles of mineral processing. Specific Objectives: The student should be able to understand the basic principles of mineral dressing and how separation of each mineral can be achieved.
Definition of terms. Basic flowsheet diagrams. Primary equipments in comminution. Primary mineral separation operations. Mineral economics
12 EXAM 1 Metallurgical Accounting Specific Objectives: The student should be able appreciate the importance of material balances and metallurgical accounting in evaluating operations in relation to technical, economic and environmental considerations
Cut-off grades, recoveries, ratio of concentration, enrichment ratio. Sample problems.
9 Introduction to metal extraction from concentrates and ores. Specific Objectives: The student should be able to explain the principles of metal extraction.
Introduction to Adaptive metallurgy Specific Objectives: The student should be able to explain the metallurgical processing of materials from extraction of metals to engineering use.
8 Foundry, metal forming, iron and steel manufacturing, metal scrap processing.
