Gilberts Lodge is finally slated to reopen this week. A grand opening celebration is planned for July 16-20.
Despite the setbacks.
Despite the times
when it was so close to
reopening only for
something else to hap-
pen, Gilberts Lodge, at
long last, appears ready
to open its door back up
to a very eager public.
We should be open by
the end of the week,
Gi l ber t s Lodge
Manager Flip Ulrich
said. Thats what were
aiming for.
The end of the week
means sometime after
Thursday, July 10, for
those who have been
waiting for more than
eight months for the
popular eatery to open
after a pair of fires rav-
aged the facility.
Were thrilled to be
open again, owner
Louie Bricolas said. We
miss our customers and
this community.
That community has
been waiting with baited
breath for the reopen-
ing, weathering a major
disappointment in late
May when a second fire
delayed the reopening
even further.
Im glads to see them
back, local resident
Douglas Cromartie said.
Theyre kind of an in-
stitution around here. It
wouldnt be the same
without them.
These customers will
notice the updated
Gi l ber t s Lodge,
Bricolas said.
We are excited to
come back stronger
than ever, he said. Our
customers will return to
a cozy and updated
Gilberts and will be
happy to see that the
train in the ceiling has
kept rolling through it
all.
Ulrich said Gilberts

Process to revitalize theater begins
It may take a while, but
the possibility of the old
Shores Theaters rebirth
is in the works.
City councils approval
of a resolution support-
ing the Shores Theater be
designated as a historical
building by the Michigan
Historical Foundation is
the first step in a poten-
tially long process.
The building has been
empty since somewhere
in the area of 2006,
Mayor Kip Walby said.
We are working on try-
ing to revitalize that the-
ater. We do have interest-
ed parties that would like
to revitalize it. One of the
first steps is to get the
Michigan Historic
Commission to recognize
it as a historic site.
Discussions between
city officials and
Emagine Theater repre-
sentatives culminated
with the possibility that if
the property was donated
to the city, the city could
then inquire with the
state about making the
building a historical site.
The propertys owner-
ship, Liggett Holdings
LLC, agreed.
Our agreement was
that I would give that
property to the city,
which I have already do-
ne, said Liggett Holdings
LLC founder Robert
Liggett Jr., who also owns
this newspaper. The city
has already made the ap-
plication and its in
Lansing. Its begun down
that long path that will ul-
timately, we hope, lead to
a two-or-three-screen
community theater.
Liggett said that,
should the application
from the state be ap-
proved, Emagine will en-
ter into a longterm lease
and run the theater as
part of their company.
It could take three
months to a year, Liggett

I spent 20 minutes
cleaning up my yard,
resi dent Deanna
Germack said. I had
charred fireworks all
over. The people on the
next street, I guess, were
shooting them off all
night and these things
were not only loud, they
littered my yard and my
neighbor's, too. And it ter-
rifies my poor dog. Its ri-
diculous.
City council addressed
the issue on the heels of a
fireworks filled July 4
weekend that seemed
particularly bad to resi-
dents, including the may-
or.
They were pretty bad
in my neighborhood,
Mayor Kip Walby said.
They were bigger, louder
than I had recalled in the
last couple of years. They
were gigantic. The phone
had to be ringing off the
hook.
Residents took action
in some cases, calling the
police department in re-
sponse to the booms and
flashes that littered the
night sky.
We had 127 calls for
service over the holiday
weekend, Interim city
manager Mike Smith
said. From midnight on
Thursday to midnight last
night, we had 127 calls for
service. We did dispatch
police officers to them,
but they were not a priori-
ty call.
How many violations
were written is part of a
report Smith expects to
get from the police de-
partment shortly.
Regardless, the number
of complaints far exceeds
the number of residents
who actually call the de-
partment for action.
I didnt call the police
because I dont think
theres much they can
do, Germack said. Its
not their fault. It just
seems impossible to track
everyone down. These
fireworks are legal I think
anyway.
The fireworks may be
legal, but shooting them
off within the city is tough
given the way the citys
ordinance reads.
We have done what we
can, city attorney Robert
Ihre said. We did amend
our ordinance to be more
restrictive than state law.
We do not allow certain
fireworks after midnight
and before 8 a.m. State
law does allows us to re-
strict them. We have pro-
hibited fireworks from
being ignited within 200

explained. Its now in the
hands of a beaurocrat,
and that is only step one.
Approval from the state
is crucial, since it allows
the city to apply for grants
to restore the theater.
If were able to do that,
then would come the sec-
ond phase, Walby said.
That would be attempt-
ing to get some grants,
and there are possibilities
there, but this is the first
step to getting to that
step. Then, of course, af-
ter the step of getting
some grants, some mon-
ey in that way, would be,
hopefully, the bringing
back of the theater. This is
just the first step. This is
not a quick process,
Walby said.
Residents in the sur-
rounding community are
enthusiastic about the pos-
sibility.
I would love to see that
happen, St even
Cooliander, who lives less
than five blocks from the
theater, said. I think it
would be great to have a
place to walk to with my
sons and go to see a movie.
There arent many places
around like that anymore.
Longtime resident Sybil
Sherman agrees.
I have a lot of really
wonderful memories with
there with friends when I
was younger, she said. I
think the kids and the
young families in the
neighborhood would love
it.

feet of a residential build-
ing or within 200 feet of a
vehicle. That is a pretty
hefty restriction when
you look at a city like St.
Clair Shores. So yes, we
have done what we can
do.
The ordinance also
reads they cannot be shot
off on public property,
which includes sidewalks
and streets.
Walby pointed out how
restrictive this ordinance
is
Our ordinance, it al-
most would seem, is very
tough for anyone to shoot
them off legally in the city,
the way the ordinance
reads, Walby said.
Everyone youre hear-
ing is basically shooting
them off illegally.
Theyre too close to
homes, etc.
According to ordi-
nance, Walby is correct.
Ihre admits, however,
fireworks are every-
where, and enforcing
the ordinance is a tall or-
der for police.
The difficulty is fire-
works these day, theyre
everywhere and theyre
being shot off all the
time, especially around
these holidays, he said.
Its very difficult, not
only for police to go to
each one of them, but to
actually find the culprit
who is actually in viola-
tion.
Meanwhile, residents
have to deal with disrup-
tive booms, flashing
lights, scared and fran-
tic pets and interrupted
sleep.
I believe the city can
only do so much,
Germack said. Its up to
neighborhoods to police
themselves I think. But
that kind of thing
doesnt happen much
anymore. Most people
just keep to themselves
and hope they dont last
all night long.
Walby said the city is
making every effort to
curb the issue and is
sensitive to the com-
plaints residents have
brought in regards to
fireworks being shot off
in the city.
In the past weve add-
ed staff to try to curtail
it. I dont mean to put the
blame someplace else,
but it seems the state has
put us in a tough posi-
tion and created this
monster, Walby said.
Pet of

Week:
Lucy
Lucy came to Mutts of
Motown Rescue in need
of emergency surgery.
She got the medical at-
tention she needed
now she needs a loving
forever home.
Lucy about 4 years old,
and weighs 60 pounds.
Lucy is good with cats,
other dogs and older
children.
However, her foster
family said she can be
very needy with her peo-
ple and does need some
work with leash training
and obedience.
Lucy is crate trained
and house trained.
Shes a diamond in the
rough and just needs a
loving family to allow
her to shine.

Director Sue Fickau said.
Things are starting to fall
into place and were get-
ting excited about it.
The centers Made in
Michigan Festival doesnt
officially begin until
Friday, Sept. 19, but the
buzz has already started
about the event and the
ramped up efforts Fickau
and others are making in
order to take the festival to
the next level.
Its going to be much
bigger than last year, she
said. Weve got so many
things lined up.
Everything from the food

Thats something were
really excited about add-
ing to this years festival,
Fickau said. We need to
let people know about this
because the money raised
can really help feed senior
citizens.
Fickau said that a beer
garden, childrens activi-
ties such as creation sta-
tions and an American
Indian tent are also on the
slate of features offered at
this years festival.
And, of course, there
will be apple pies.
The Made in Michigan
Festival coincides with the
centers annual apple pie
fundraiser.
She added there is al-
ways a continued need for
vendors for the two-day

THURSDAY, JULY 10, 2014 ST. CLAIR SHORES CONNECTION 3A
Harper Sports Shop is closing after 20 years in St. Clair Shores and nearly 70 years in business. Below, the
history of Harper Sport Shop dates back to the 1940s.
Harper Sport Shop to close its doors
For two decades,
Harper Sport Shop has
been a fixture in the city.
Many children bought
their first pair of ice
skates there.
Many others bought
their first baseball glove,
football cleats or softball
bat.
Some came there as
children and return as
fathers and mothers,
helping their children
with their sporting
goods needs.
Its really an amazing
thing, said owner Mark
Seppala. Getting to
build those kinds of rela-
tionships with people
over the years is some-
thing very special. Were
very proud of this.
On Thursday, July 31,
2014 the doors at Harper
Sports Shop will close
forever.
Its been an incredi-
bly difficult thing, an in-
credibly difficult deci-
sion, Seppala said.
Weve tried so many
different things to ex-
pand our reach, every-
thing from a website to
customer loyalty pro-
grams, lots of things.
But, in the end, you look
at the numbers and
theyre just not where
they have to be for sus-
tainability.
There are many fac-
tors in the decision,
Seppala said, but their
closing is as much a sign
of the times as anything
else.
There are a lot of eco-
nomic factors, he said.
Then the climate of the
industry itself has
changed a lot, too. Its
harder and harder for a
business like ours to
compete.
Reluctancy of suppli-
ers and manufacturers
to maintain smaller ac-
counts was also a factor.
The convergence of all
these things left Seppala
with little choice.
I grew up in this
store, and its been a
pleasure and an honor,
Seppala said. My
grandfather, Les, started
this business in 1947,
and weve been able to
help so many people
over the years, and that
is something I feel good
about, even though this
has been a very tough
thing, a very tough dec-
sion.
St. Clair Shores resi-
dent, Diane Francesca,
51, was walking into the
store when she heard
the news of the shop's
closing.
Im really very sad to
hear it, she said. But I
can understand it.
Things have changed so
much since I was a little
girl and needed ice
skates or my brother
needed a baseball bat.
Back then, we came
here. Now, too many
people order that stuff
off the internet or just
pick it up when they go
to Meijer or Wal-mart.
Its sad, because the ser-
vice is so much better at
places like this. People
care who you are, and
want to make sure you
have the right things and
that its quality. I guess
people dont care much
about that anymore.
They just want it cheap.

Last years Guns-N-
Hoses softball event was
a huge success, hun-
dreds of people raising
hundreds of dollars for
scholarships and other
worthy charities.
The success prompted
the events organizers,
the Womens Civic
League of St. Clair
Shores, to make a con-
certed effort this year to
expand the softball
game into a full-blown
festival.
Beginning at 4 p.m.
Saturday, Aug. 9, at Kyte
Monroe Park, the 2nd
annual Guns N Hoses
Softball Classic will be-
gin, and its something
Womens Civic League
member and organizer
Debbie Powell is excited
about.
The game starts at
6:30 p.m., Powell said.
But its going to be way
more than just the game
this year its an
event.
The game is the focal
point of the festivities,
but Powell said there is
plenty for families to do
before the first pitch be-
tween the citys fire and
police departments is
thrown.
Were going to have
food, she said. Hot
dogs, chips, some res-
taurants will be there,
too. The Optimist Club is
having a beer tent as
well. And, for the kids,
were going to have
some inflatables and
face-painting and a bal-
loon artist too.
Admission to the
event is $5 for anyone
over 5 years old, Powell
said, with the proceeds
split between the
Womens Civic Leagues
grants scholarship fund,
Cops 4 Kids, and the
Great Lakes Burn Camp.
Its a three-way split,
Powell said. So we want
as many people to come
enjoy the game and the
festival as we can get.
The money raised is go-
ing to three really great
causes, and we want to
be able to raise as much
as possible.

which can be purchased

Top, Defiant, is one of several boats from St. Clair Shores at the club. Above,
sailboats sit in their slips awaiting their next voyage on the waters of Lake St.
Clair.
Following its annual
sailing regatta, the Detroit
Boat Club recently hosted
a special celebration to
honor the organizations
175th year of boating in
Detroit.
The Detroit Boat Club
was founded in February
1839, 63 years after our
founding fathers signed
the Declaration of
Independence, 22 years
before the Civil War began
and two years after
Michigan became a state.
The stockade, which
marked the fort of Detroit,
had only been removed a
dozen years earlier and
the citys population was
less than 9,000.
It is the oldest continu-
ous rowing club in the
world, the oldest boating
club in the United States
and the oldest social club
in Michigan.
This is a milestone that
no other boating club in
the United States can
claim, said Karen Fink,
2014 Detroit Boat Club
Commodore. The contin-
ued success of the Detroit
Boat Club is a testimony to
the love of the water and
the enjoyment of boating
that has always been a
hallmark of the Detroit ar-
ea.
More than 70 sailboats
from clubs around south-
east Michigan participated
in the DBCs annual regat-
ta, held under sunny skies
with light wind conditions
on Lake St. Clair.
Following the race, sail-
ors, DBC members and
guests enjoyed a summer
party on the banks of the
Detroit River in celebra-
tion of the Detroit Boat
Clubs 175th Anniversary,
and its 120th Annual
Sailing Regatta.
The clubs first of six
boat houses was a small
structure with wells for
three boats in back of the
Campau family ware-
house at the foot of
Randol ph St reet .
Founders included some
of the most recognized
names in Detroit history:
E.A. Brush, James A.
Armstrong, John Chester,
J.H. Farnsworth, A.T.
McReynolds, Alfred
Brush, Alpheus S.
Williams and S.H. Sibley.
A group of picnicking
DBC members is credited
with coining the name
Belle Isle for the Detroit
park as a welcome alterna-
tive to Hog Island, in hon-
or of Miss Isabelle Cass,
the daughter of Lewis
Cass, former Michigan ter-
ritorial governor and, later,
U.S. Senator.
Originally founded as a
rowing club, sailing also
has a long tradition with
the Detroit Boat Club. The
DBC was one of the three
clubs that founded The
Detroit Regional Yachting
Association in 1912.
As it has for decades, the
DBC owns a fleet of Flying
Scots which are used for
pleasure sailing and to
continue the long tradition
of instructing future sail-
ors.
Each year, the DBC
hosts a DRYA-sanctioned
regatta on Lake St. Clair,
with 2014 marking the
Clubs 120th Annual
Sailing Regatta.
The DBC enjoys a spe-
cial relationship with the
Friends of Detroit Rowing,
whose members row un-
der the Detroit Boat Club
name as the Detroit Boat
Club Crew.
Friends of Detroit
Rowing continue their op-
erations in the former
DBC clubhouse on Belle
Isle in Detroit under a
special arrangement
with the City of Detroit,
which assumed owner-
ship of the building in
1996.

Fungal infections of the nails,
referred to as tinea unguium or
onychomycosis, are characterized
by nails that look white and
opaque, thickened, and brittle.
Tese infections more commonly
afect toenails, though fnger nails
can be infected as well.
Patients with an increased risk
of onychomycosis include people
with diabetes or diseases of the
small blood vessels (peripheral
vascular disease), patients with
chronic athletes foot (tinea
pedis), older adults and patients
of any age who wear artifcial nails
(acrylic or wraps).
Artifcial nails increase the risk
for onychomycosis because when
an artifcial nail is applied, the nail
surface is usually abraded with an
emery board damaging the nail
surface. Tis provides an entry
point from nail instruments that
may carry infection. Also, water
trapped under an artifcial nail can
create a moist, warm environment
favorable for fungal growth.
Fungal nails are dif cult to treat
and take signifcant time to heal.
Te most common treatment
options include topical antifungal
medications or oral antifungal
medications.
Nail hygiene is very important
for patients with fungal
infections. Nail clippers and other
instruments used on the nails
need to be carefully cleaned to
insure the infection is not spread
to other nails or to other persons.
To learn more about fungal
infections of the nails, contact
your dermatologist, or call
us at Eastside Dermatology,
Dr. Lisa Manz-Dulac and
Associates.
Eastside Dermatology has
of ces in New Baltimore and
Grosse Pointe. You can reach
them at (313) 884-3380 or

Q. How Do I Find A Professional Roofng Contractor?
A. Referrals are the best place to start. Ask a neighbor or friend who recently had
his roof replaced about his contractor and if he was happy with the work done. The
second best place is to go to your local building distributor or lumber dealer. Some
other points to consider when choosing a roofng contractor are: repeat business
in nearby area, licensed and insured, length of time in business, multiple references,
willingness and ability to handle complaints quickly and fairly, warranted work,
completeness and professionalism of estimate offered and presentation given and
knowledge and thoroughness of roofng procedures.
Be careful of contractors who have a magnetic sign on their truck and a business card.
This does not necessarily constitute a professional contractor. Make sure your
contractor is licensed by the state.

Q. The fringe on my rug is starting to wear out. Is there anything I can do?
A. The sooner you address any issues, the more repair options you will have. If the
damaged areas are left unattended, it is possible that the rug itself will start to unravel.
Hagopian evaluates the condition of your fringe, the value of the rug and how
important restoration is to you before any repair. There are many solutions, either by
hand or machine, to keep rug fringe looking like new. A bad fringe repair job can affect
the value and aesthetics of your rug. Let Hagopians experienced team solve any fringe
issues correctly.
Q. How do I restore a rug that has been in the family a long time?
A. Depending upon the damage or wear, Hagopian has many solutions for you. For
example, to fx a hole or torn area, we have skilled artisans with the ability to reweave
your rug. With 75 years of experience with rugs, we can easily handle the most diffcult
restoration. Thankfully, new methods have allowed the cost of repairs to become much
more affordable today. So Hagopian can help you enjoy your rug for many more years.

Q. How do I choose a reputable jeweler?
A. When shopping for fne jewelry it is important to shop at a well established professional
jeweler. It is recommended that you look for a jeweler affliated with the Better
Business Bureau and has a trustworthy reputation.
Q. How often should I have my jewelry professionally cleaned and inspected?
A. Fine jewelry is a precious possession that is designed to last a lifetime. Proper care is
required to assure the lasting qualities of your jewelry. See your jeweler at least once a
year and they will check for loose prongs, worn mountings and general wear and tear.
Visit your jeweler every six months for a professional cleaning.
Q. How can I fnd the best place to sell my gold?
A. Take your gold to a reputable local jeweler. Keep your eye on the scale and make sure
you are being paid by the gram. A legitimate buyer is licensed by the state and will
have credentials. The seller will be asked to provide a drivers license or other form of
government - issued identifcation.

now. It does help when
someone asks if their
street has been done and
I can verify, yes, the
sweeper did go down
their street. For snow
plowing, same thing.
There definitely is bene-
fit
Interim city manager
Mike Smith told the
council of the benefit the
devices offer in terms of
legality.
We do look to see who
is where, Smith said.
On the sweepers, we do
have an obligation to
sweep the streets so ma-
ny times under the law.
This gives us a report
when they went down
and how many times
they went down that
street. It is nice.
Babcock said that the
devices are also a conve-
nient tool for him when
circumstances arise and
he needs to get a truck
or a crew to a certain lo-
cation within the city
quickly and efficiently.
With the devices on
board, he can dispatch
the crews closest to the
scene.
In a city that is six
miles long, and you can
catch someone who is
near the trash, or the
sign, or the mailbox,
were picking stuff up all
the time, he said. I
know the crew which is
in the area by looking it
up on the map. There is
definitely benefit in
that.
Babcock went on to
explain how the devices
help make his depart-
ment more efficient,
saving time, and in turn,
money.
Its quite a bit of time,
if you think about it,
Babcock explained. If
you leave my (DPW)
yard and go up to 14
Mile and back, thats
quite a bit of time. It
does happen daily.
The department is
looking into future pro-
grams, Babcock said,
that will tie into other fu-
el and motor pool soft-
ware.
The five-year contract
with Teletrac does allow
for an opt-out, giving the
city the opportunity to
get out of the deal.
We are going to be
looking at alternatives,
Smith said. Because
there is an opt-out on
this contract were able
to do that.

SECTION B ST. CLAIR SHORES CONNECTION THURSDAY, JULY 10, 2014

1B AUTOMOTIVE | 1-3B CLASSIFIEDS
Ford Edge is about to
expand its global footprint
in a big way. An all-new
2015 model arrives in area
showrooms early next
year as a showcase of
smart technology from
Ford. Edge sales will fol-
low in more than 100
worldwide markets.
The new Edge has been
completely transformed
from wheels to roof. Based
on Fords global midsize
vehicle architecture, Edge
has been reshaped to be
more visually athletic, re-
tooled to meet higher ex-
pectations for quality
around the world and re-
engineered with more ad-
vanced technologies to
make the driving experi-
ence more rewarding.
Great product develop-
ment is driven by innova-
tion, said Mark Fields, in-
coming president and
CEO, Ford Motor Co. At
Ford, our job is to under-
stand how global consum-
ers are changing, antici-
pate their needs, and ulti-
mately deliver the great
products they want. This
new Edge is an excellent
example of Ford at its
best.
The new Edge is slightly
larger than the model it re-
places, but retains its fa-
miliar four-door, five-seat
configuration. It will be
available for the first time
with front camera technol-
ogy to help drivers see bet-
ter in certain instances, an
enhanced active park as-
sist system to enable per-
pendicular and parallel
parking in tight quarters
and an advanced adaptive
steering system to make
Edge easier to maneuver
and more fun to drive. A
premium-level Titanium
series will be available for
the first time.
Edge will come stan-
dard with a 2.0-liter
EcoBoost engine, tuned to
deliver a balanced mix of
fuel economy and perfor-
mance. A normally aspi-
rated, 3.5-liter V6 engine
will also be available. A
Sport model will feature
Fords 2.7-liter V6, along
with standard 21-inch
wheels; this will be the
hi ghest-performance
Edge.
Smart technology is
available on Edge to im-
prove efficiency. Auto
Start-Stop can improve fu-
el economy by turning off
the engine when it is not
needed, such as when the
vehicle is stopped at a traf-
fic light. Edge also features
smart air inlets at the front
that can direct air along
the vehicle sides creat-
ing an air curtain to
enable greater aerody-
namic efficiency at high
speeds.
