Central University
Central Universities in I ndia are set up by Central Government. The Indian President is the Visitor for all Central Universities. I t is a duty of the President or Visitor to nominate members for Executive
Committee, Court, Board of Management or Selection Committees of these universities, as contained in University Act. The nominees are appointed to their respective posts with the help of ministrys
secretariat.
Some of the central universities in India are:
State University
State Universities in I ndia are established and run by the State Governments. These universities receive grants and non-plan grants required for maintenance from the State Governments. The State
Governors act as the Chancellors of the state-run universities.
Some of the state-run Indian universities are:
Private University
Private Universities in India have been present since the time of independence. However, they were not assigned this status until recently. Some of the private universities are recognized by
University Grants Commission and others define themselves to be so. Like the other universities, these universities offer professional courses in different disciplines. However, there are a few private
universities which offer only single specialized programs.

Agricultural University
Agriculture is one of the main occupations of India. The Royal Commission (1926) and the National Education Commission (1964-66) stressed on the need to build such educational system in I ndia
that can impart training on agricultural development of this country. As a result of this, agricultural universities were opened in different parts of India.
