Program Description: The First Year Completion (FYC) program is a pathway designed for first-time East Los Angeles College (ELAC) students who are committed to enrolling full-time at ELAC and are ready to complete their English and Math sequence in one year. Students are enrolled in their courses each semester and are provided with extensive, proactive student support services through the First Year Programs Office.
Career Guidance Counselor Assistant Description: Under the direct supervision of a counselor, the CGCA serves a critical role in monitoring, guiding, and mentoring FYC students during their first year at East Los Angeles College. Successful candidates will have strong listening, organizational, presentation, and research skills. The incumbents must also have initiative, motivation, and a strong desire to help talented First-Generation students explore and discover their academic and career options. Applicants must be able to work with frequent interruptions in a fast-paced, high-volume office.
Requirements: Must be enrolled full-time as graduate student in an accredited Masters degree program in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work (MSW) or career development, or related field Be available to work 20-25 hours per week, between the hours of 8am-5pm and may include some weekend mornings and evenings Completed Counseling Theory, Student Development Theory, and/or Career Counseling Theories preferred, but not required Must be skilled with using MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint Must be able to commit for the East Los Angeles College 2014-2015 Academic Year
Job Duties: Closely monitor, communicate, and provide follow-up for the assigned 120-125 student caseload Be a liaison between the student, their instructors, and the administration of FYC (Counselor and Associate Dean) Periodically update assigned student files. Information that is updated includes: Student appointments, drop-in questions, number of student contacts (email or phone calls), student early alerts, follow-up with tutoring services, and when a schedule change occurs Assist in coordinating, developing, and facilitating FYC workshops and information sessions Collaborate with ELACs Student Services division and represent FYC in campus community events Participate in weekly FYC staff meetings and/or trainings East Los Angeles College FYC / Adelante Programs
Take part in professional development opportunities, such as the CSU and UC transfer conferences Participate in FYC student campus visits to four-year institutions Other office duties as assigned
Compensation: This is a temporary paid internship and position is contingent upon funding $17.49 per hour
