How UniPrint Works
UniPrint was developed to enable seamless printing in a Server-Based Computing
(SBC) environment.
Microsoft Terminal Server and Citrix MetaFrame server both support printing to printers
connected to the server or client. However, the host server must be able to support each
of the numerous printers that a user might select. Such printer support is usually
accomplished by installing the relevant printer driver on the server. In particular, Terminal
Services does not support multi-purpose machines that can fax, print and copy.
Not only does every new device driver require installation and support; the server must
also be able to cope with:
The sheer number of printer devices on the market;
The stability of printer drivers for some devices;
Naming conventions of drivers among different operating systems.
Each of these issues can reduce the reliability of the server.
More Device Drivers = Reduced Stability
Conserving bandwidth is another problem for Server Based Computing. Printer files
can be extremely large, using up bandwidth when sending files to remote printers.
Sending such files can be very time-consuming and costly.

your server will require. Most manufacturers use their own technology and each printer

A Choice of Print Solutions
For traditional PC-client environments, UniPrint can send your print jobs directly to
your client machines printer. This option uses our UniPrint client software to provide
your users with a complete printing solution. Many organizations today use thin clients
or a mixture of thin and traditional fat clients. If your organization is structured this way
the Gateway module will enable you to print from all your terminals without installing
any client software. In this case UniPrint spools your print job to a separate server,
which also enables a higher volume of users to print simultaneously.
For your mobile workforce, UniPrint offers a further solution. Our WebPrint module
product permits you to print to local printers even if your only connection to the server
is through a Citrix Java or Web Client. You dont need to install any additional software
on your client machine to use WebPrint. This means you can print from any computer
that is connected to the internet.
Our three solutions are:
UniPrint for traditional Windows terminal environments;
Gateway module for thin terminal and telecommuting users;
WebPrint module for anyone, anywhere.

The UniPrint Advantage
The UniPrint software suite installs a universal printer driver on the server. This
universal printer driver was designed to work with Microsoft Terminal Server. Our
device driver eliminates both pre-installation incompatibility issues and post-installation
stability issues.
UniPrint creates a PDF file. You have a number of other options available at
print time, including:
Preview the print job;
Select a printer from an available printer list;
Attach the PDF file to an email message.
Save the file locally in PDF format;
Use any or all of the available features of the selected printer.
Installing UniPrint

on the host server means that the server does not rely on any
one-printer driver negating the support and stability issues commonly found in todays
typical installations.
Print requests are reliably processed on the server through the UniPrint

driver, and the

resulting printer file is typically smaller in size, thereby decreasing bandwidth usage,
while maintaining high quality print output.
Bandwidth Reduction
UniPrints universal printer driver substantially decreases the size of the printer file.
Although a typical word-processing file might only take up a few dozen kilobytes of file
space on your hard drive, when sent to the printer the file expands considerably.
Consider a typical MS Word file of 142 kilobytes in length. Sent to a color inkjet printer,
this file expands to 6,287 KB (six megabytes) in size. All this data must go over the
network to the targeted printer. However, when sent via a server that uses UniPrints

universal printer driver, the file size of the printer file is reduced to just 68 KB.
In this example, the file size reduction is by a factor of ten.
