Oper at i on Modes
Space Heating operation
In space heating operation, heating will be activated as required by the temperature set point.
This operation can be turned ON manually by pressing the ON / OFF button or automatically with the
schedule timers (see page 8).
Sanitary Hot Water operation
In sanitary hot water operation, the indoor unit will provide hot water via the sanitary tank (if connected).
The temperature set point can be adjusted at any time using the sanitary temperature adjust buttons
.
This operation can be turned ON manually by pressing the sanitary water heating button or
automatically with the schedule timers (see page 13).
If required the booster heater (located in the sanitary tank) will raise the water temperature to the sanitary
hot water temperature set point.
Booster Heater operation*
Booster heater mode provides extra heating for the sanitary tank via the booster heater (fitted in the
sanitary tank).
Powerful Sanitary Hot Water operation*
If hot water is required urgently use the powerful sanitary hot water operation.
To activate press the sanitary water heating button for 5 seconds. The operation mode icon
and the booster heater icon will flash. Powerful sanitary hot water operation is deactivated
automatically when the set sanitary hot water temperature is reached.
Note: Powerful sanitary hot water operation overrides the schedule timer.
Silent Mode operation
The outdoor unit will work at reduced capacity to reduce noise. The indoor heating capacity will also drop.
Hot Start operation / Defrost operation
During hot start operation the pump will remain off until a certain refrigerant heat exchanger temperature
is reached, guaranteeing correct start up of the heat pump.
Due to low outdoor temperatures freezing of the outdoor heat exchanger may occur. Defrost operation
clears this automatically and the system returns to space heating or hot water operation.
Schedule Timers
The schedule timer allows you to programme the space heating and sanitary hot water. You can add,
browse or delete programmes whenever you want with the schedule timer.
1. Space heating - You can programme 5 different actions each day of the week.
2. Sanitary hot water - You can programme 5 different actions per day which are automatically
actioned every day of the week.
3. Silent mode - You can programme 5 different actions per day which are automatically actioned
every day of the week.
4. Booster heater* - You can programme 5 different actions per day which are automatically actioned
every day of the week.
*This operation uses the booster heater therefore is not as energy efficient as utilising the outdoor unit.
Note: For further description of functions and icons see pages 22-23.

The clock is always displayed in the 24 HR format. The clock will not change to GMT or BST during the
year. Please adjust the clock when appropriate in the spring and autumn.
The schedules are ONLY activated when the schedule timer icon is shown in the display. If the
schedules are not activated there will be NO schedule timer icon.
Turning OFF the schedule timer will effect ALL programmed operations (i.e. space heating, sanitary hot
water, booster heater and silent mode).
If 2 or more actions are programmed for the same day and the same time, only the action with the
HIGHEST action number will be executed.
If you do not require the Altherma to be operating for a period of time e.g. a long holiday, simply press the
schedule timer button to turn OFF the schedule timer (NO schedule timer icon displayed).
If you are operating the Altherma manually press the ON / OFF button to switch OFF the space heating.
Press the sanitary water heating button to switch OFF the sanitary hot water.
(Operation mode icons and are only displayed when ON).
The powerful sanitary hot water and booster heater operations use the booster heater therefore are not as
energy efficient as utilising the outdoor unit.
In the set auto temperature function for space heating, the Altherma will adjust the temperature set point
according the outside temperature. The minimum and maximum temperature values are set in the field
settings. This mode will provide extra energy savings please see the installation and operational manuals
for more information.

335 - 40

360
o

* Please note: Storing water at 60

C is to prevent microbial growth (legionella). This is not necessary with the Altherma as it has built
in controls to perform the prevention of microbial growth (legionella) by weekly boosting the water temperature up to 70
o
C to sanitise
the system. This allows you to safely store water at lower temperatures for maximum efficiency.
If your electricity supplier provides economy 7 or 10 tariffs (cheaper electricity for 7 or 10 hours per day),
programme the Altherma and other home devices (washing machine / dishwasher etc.) to operate during
these times to maximise energy cost savings.
DO NOT SWITCH OFF THE MAIN POWER SUPPLY TO THE ALTHERMA. A POWER SUPPLY IS
REQUIRED TO MAINTAIN THE PROGRAMMED OPERATIONS AND TO ACTION THE WEEKLY
