Although not winning any championships, the Huskies completed a very

successful season. The Huskies appeared in both the Western Conference and
State Tournament, being defeated in both of the semi-finals. Th Reno Varsity
will have many returning veterans next year and also a' number of Junior
Varsity hopefuls. During the season the first team was usually composed of
Dick Nannini cmd Ed Hancock at forward, Gene Mendiola at center, and Bob
Krone and Wayne Courtright at guard. These five were usually backed by
Marvin Byars, Don Richards, Danny Sullivan, Neil Cline, Buddy Piazzo, and
Charlie Spina. Piazzo, Spina, Richards, Mendiola and Cline will be back next
year to form a strong nucleus for next year's five.

With Ed Spoon playing his first varsity game and dropping in 13 points, the Huskies edged the
Carson Senators in an exceedingly rough game. Most of the fourth quarter was played on the
floor as the Senators desperately tried to overtake the Renoites, who won their first game under
their new coach, Bud Beasley.
When the tragic death of the great Reno coach, Herb
Foster, hit Reno High School, the Huskie basketball
team was in the midst of pre-season practice. Leader-
less and stricken by Herb's death, there was little
hope for Reno's promising team. It was then that Bud
Beasley, physical education instructor and B Squad
coach for many years, took over the Huskies. Under

his able supervision the team won eleven of twelve
conference games and were runners-up in the West-
ern Conference tournament.

i_one of the most satisfying highlights of the '54
! season was the double win over Reno's cross-state rival,
/' the Las Vegas Wildcats, who went down in defeat to the
Huskies by scores of 62-37 and 66-46. It was the Wild-
cats from Vegas who handed the Reno team fonr of the
six defeats suffered last season. The powerful Reno
Huskies rose to all heights for this classic in which they
were greatly rewarded with the twin victory.
the uual victory from Vegas, the Huskic.<,
5wung into action with \Ve5tern Conference teams,
downing such foes as Douglas, Lovelock, Stewart, anc!
Tahoe-Truckee. By mid-season, the Reno squad had
definitely established themselves as threats to the State
crown. Their offensive average was a fat 70.3 points per
game. Their defensive efforts were not in vain; holding
the opponents to a mere 40.7 points a game. Head
mentor Buddy Garfinkle stressed defense as well as
offense; his theory was, "If my boys can hold another
team to 30 points, it only takes 3I to beat them." This
strategy must have had some effect on the team,
numerous times Reno's opponents \vere held in the 30-,:
point margin. The highest total of points ever scored'
against the ,:Huskies was 59.

l1his year's Reno High School basketball team have established themselves as one of the greatest if not THE greatest team ever to come
out of this school.
The Huskie hoop squad rolled up an impressive season of 25 win;; and one defeat. The perfect record was marred only by a one-point
loss at Klamath Falls, Oregon, in December. That night they were caged by the one pomt when three regulars fouled out early; naxt evening the
Red and Blue came back to belt the supposedly powerful Pelicans by 12 points.
The Huskies ended a six week training grind with an opener against arch-rival Sparks. The game, which ended in an impressive
'71-33 victory for the Huskies, inaugurated the newly built Sparks' gym. That weekend the squad travelled to Klamath Falls, Oregon, where they
took on a strong Pelican team. Klamath eked out a 50-49 victory over the Huskies the first game, but Coach Garfinkle's charges came back the
second night to hand the Klamath club a decisive 54-42 setback.
Reno came hack after vacation to take an aggressive Manogue group by an outstanding 80-47 win. That same weekend they beat the
Fallon Green Wave to the tune of 52-36. Next week marked the most spectacular scoring spree ever to be shown in the State of Ntvada, this
being the 102-59 victory over the Sparks Railroaders. The points scored in this game were the gmatest ever amassed in a single -basketball
exhibition. It also set an individual record for the school, which was made by two-time winner of _the All-State awar4, Darrell

Instead, the Huskies turned in <l grcJt season record and
won the State Championship again. They also ackled the N.I.e.

themselves in the Acker Tournament. besides running up a :F-

Reno opened the season with a pair of wins oyer the Yall!1ted

The Huskies made their debut in the new Conference with
double wins over Chico and Shasta. The unprecedented \yin streak
came to an end when Las Vegas edged Reno ()2-6I. The Huskies

The hrst post-season tournament for Reno was the Acker

dropped three of the next four to finish in ')th place. An
ankle injury to Stan hurt their chances of winning.
The \VeSlern Zone Tournament opened with the Huskies rolling
to a victory over Doug!as. They followed with an easy romp over
Sparks, NI-4lJ in the semi-finals. The final game of the tournament
saw Reno edge FaBon 65-01 in a thrilling game.
State Tournament started with Reno opposed by Basic. The team
delivered an easy 7,)-46 victory. Sparks was next to fal! under the
Reno axe, 59-3N. The great season ended with Reno smashing
LIS 77-50 in the finest game the Huskies turned in all
season. The \'ictory amply revenged the one-point defe,l[ dealt the
Huskies earlier in the season.
The final Ylctory over Las Vegas ended the mighty reign of
