Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Do You Stretch Before Mass?

One year back in college, I decided to take a Karate class being
offered on campus. Every class began with a series of stretching
exercises. I must have been the stiffest person in the class as I
pathetically and unsuccessfully struggled to force myself into
stretching positions. There I was trying my best not to look like I
was doing a physical comedy routine as I battled with me limbs as
if they were deliberately working against me! The experience at
the first class was so humiliating that I decided to spend an hour
before every class stretching on my own so that by the time I got
to the class I could keep up with the others! The decision to do
this pre-class stretching session significantly boosted my ability to
more fully participate in the class, increased my confidence and
led to me getting much more out of the whole experience!

In the Gospel today, Jesus shares the parable of the sower who
scatters seeds upon multiple surfaces. Any experienced farmer
will tell that even the best seed is useless if it is scattered onto soil
that has not been properly prepared. Jesus makes a similar
observation regarding the hearts ability to be affected by the
seed of Gods Word. How often do we set ourselves up to get
the least possible from Mass by doing absolutely nothing to
prepare for the experience? We prepare before the drivers test,
the final exam, the job interview, the championship game, an
important speech and even prepare the turkey before putting it in
the oven! Yet on Sunday we justGo to Mass, sit back in our
pews and almost as a dare wait for the leaders of the liturgy
to impress us: Go ahead Father, Choir, lectors make my day!
Well, Farmer Smith, Gonzalo, Dressler and Kelley, AND the
readers and choir at the liturgy will be generously sowing the best
seed ever invented each Sunday. If you prepare by reflecting on
the readings beforehand, arriving early to pray for openness to
whatever God wants you to receive, and, if possible making a
good confession or act of contrition, then dont be surprised if you
walk away from the whole experience a profoundly changed
person. Yes, Gods Word will do that.
