FIRST GRADE MATH SOL: 1.7
The students will be able to:
Identify the number of pennies equivalent to a nickel, a dime, and a
quarter.
Determine the value of a collection of pennies, nickels, and dimes
whose total value is 100 cents or less.

For the purpose of this assignment I will be focusing on the students
identifying the number of pennies equivalent to a nickel, dime, and
quarter and displaying bad and good examples of how to teach the
students effectively.

The Bad Example
PENNIES
A PENNY IS WORTH ONE CENT
Pennies are a copper color
Pennies are shiny
Abraham Lincoln is on the penny
Five pennies equal one nickel
Ten pennies are equivalent to a dime
Twenty-five pennies correspond equally with a quarter
NICKELS
NICKELS ARE WORTH FIVE CENTS
Nickels are a silver color
Nickels are bigger than a dime
Thomas Jefferson is on the dime
Five pennies are equivalent to one nickel

DIMES
DIMES ARE WORTH TEN CENTS
Dimes are the smallest coins
Dimes are silver in color
Franklin D. Roosevelt is on the dime
Ten pennies are equal to a dime

QUARTERS
QUARTERS ARE WORTH TWENTY-FIVE CENTS
Quarters are shiny
Quarters are silver in color
Twenty-five pennies is equivalent to a quarter
George Washington is on the quarter

WHY IS THIS A BAD
EXAMPLE?
This is considered to be a bad example for teaching children about the value
of pennies and how they are equivalent to a nickel, dime, and quarter
because:
The font is upper and lower cased which can be confusing for six and seven year olds
There is too much writing
There are no visual supports
It is not directly teaching or demonstrating how many pennies are equivalent to each coin
Some of the content included is irrelevant to the lesson

The Good Example
THE PENNY
A penny is worth 1

THE NICKEL
A nickel is worth 5

THE DIME
A dime is worth 10

5 PENNIES ARE = TO 1

10 PENNIES ARE = TO 1 DIME

25 PENNIES IS = TO 1

WHY IS THIS A GOOD
EXAMPLE?
The text is short and concise
There are specific symbols used such as the cent and equal sign to indicate
the proper amount of money and its equivalency
It is depicted in a child-friendly manner
The presentation is consistent
The font is equally the same throughout
The material flows logically
The coins are spaced out and large enough for the children to see and
understand
