How to emulate a switch on gns3
VERSION 2
Hi guys, after some research with a friend, we can successfully simulate a switch.

1 - Install gns3 ( );
2 - try to get the c3725-adventerprisek9-mz.124-15.T14 from your sources;
3 - open the gns3 and go to edit > symbol manager. Add the ethernet_switch, double click on it on right bar, and select router c3700 on type,
apply, OK.
4 - go to edit > ios images and hypervisors, add the right image and save.

Now, on symbols bar, drop the ethernet_switch and fire it up!!

Hope it helps! Regards.

Hi Helder,

I went and got the image and instelled gns3 follwoing your instructions but cannot my virtual router started. The guide from GNS3 stipulates
how to do a simple start but sofar no success in getting a putty console started.

I will try again tomorrow with a clear head.

Thanks for the tip!!!!

Hey borco1954,

I've been using gns3 for a while now and I love it. It's a lot cheaper than the lab gear I have. This should help you out.
1) drag your router into the topology
2) right click on it and choose "configure"
3) go over to the "slots" tab
4) leave the "slot 0" the way it is
5) make a "slot 1" entry for "NM-16ESW", apply and save your changes
6) change the symbol on it to look like a switch if you want
7) enter the "no ip route" command in global config mode so it doesn't act like a router

Note 1: I've never been able to simulate port-security with them

Note 2: the vtp stuff takes a little getting used to
Switch# show vlan-switch
Switch# vlan database (to do your vtp and vlan stuff)

Enjoy!

you should use packet tracer, the 16esw module is very limited...

Hi Brain and Helver,

Thanks for the information. I sitched from Windows 7 and moved to a Window XP platform and got - sofar those things running that didn't
work last night. This is really great stuff from a learning perspective. The feature I like is the Virtual Box Guest. Don't know exactly if it works
but it suggests being able to run a VB virtual machine running on my XP machine. will test it at an opportune time. I just wanted to express

Hi good people.

It wont emulate a FULL-BASED switch, but his imae have th mos switch commands...

Great job on getting it working! I run it on 64bit Windows 7 and I know how tough it can be setting it up on your own. The hardest thing for
me was getting SDM to run on it. It took me quite a while to get that part figured out and I still don't know why they don't make an SDM
version that can run with newer java versions.

Hi, "no ip route" this is not complete! right ? do i need to do it for all networks "ip route 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0"

thank you in advance

The easiest way to emulate an IOS switch in GNS3 (0.8.4 or later) is simply to:
TIPS
The following is an extract from the book GNS3 Network Simulation Guide, which gives some more information on the NM-16ESW module
used in the EtherSwitch router device. [Disclaimer: I am the author of this book]

The NM-16ESW is based on older Cisco hardware and does not support many of the new switch features that CCIE and
CCNP candidates are expected to learn about.
However, to overcome some of the shortcomings, there is a baseconfig_sw.txt file that is used as the startup configuration file
for the 37xx EtherSwitch router. You can find this file in your Images directory and customize if you wish. By default it make
sthe following changes:
Firstly, routing is disabled. This means that if you wish to use it as a layer 3 switch, you will have to add the command ip
routing, just like you would with say a 3750 switch. Switch ports begin at FastEthernet 1/0, so FastEthernet 0/0 and 0/1 are
shutdown and should be left shutdown if you want the device to function as a switch. Also, since these switch ports are not able
to detect duplex, they have all been preconfigured with speed 100 and duplex full. One of the most difficult features to get used
to if you are familiar with Catalyst switches are the commands that substitute vlan-swi tch for the familiar and simple vlan in
commands like:
show vlan-switch brief
The other annoying fact (if you have an older version of IOS) is that the switch still uses the vlan database style commands,
although there are some macros that will get loaded and help you out if your IOS is new enough, such as an exec macro vl that
will expand to show vlan-switch brief.

As others have said, it won't do all the things that a modern hardware switch will do, but it will do enough to let you learn the concepts (if
not the most modern forms of the commands) of: (from http://www.cisco.com/web/learning/exams/list/icnd1b.html#~Topics)

Make sure you have a default c37xx router image in your list of IOS images 1.
Click on the "Browse Switches" icon in hte left hand pane 2.
Drag an "EtherSwitch router" device onto your topology 3.
Be careful when connecting devices to your switch device - make sure you connect to ports numbered 1/x - DON'T use interface 0/0 or
0/1
Don't use the "auto connect" feature (by holding <Shift> when you select the "add-a-link" tool and selecting a connection type)
If you do use the "auto connect" feature then interfaces 0/0 and 0/1 will be selected on the EtherSwitch Router device
