BILL TANCHAK
68, of Asbury Park
Asbury Park resident Bill Tanchak says he thinks
the government is going a little too far in its attempt to
prohibit smoking on all public beaches and parks in the
state.
Its like that old proverb: once the camel gets its
nose in the tent, he takes the whole tent and pretty soon
theres no room for you, said Tanchak, 68.
Tanchak isnt even a smoker, he said, aside from a
cigar once in a blue moon.
Its just a little too intrusive. Theres too much rules
and regulation, and they keep piling it on. Whats next?
he said. Just dont blow smoke in my face and Im OK.
The bill to ban smoking, first kicked around four
years ago, has now made it to the desk of Gov. Chris
Christie after passing both houses on June 26. He has 45
days to sign the bill, suggest changes or veto it.
Im hopeful he will sign it, said Assemblywoman
Valerie Huttle, D-Bergen, a primary sponsor. I think
he would agree that smoking, as far as secondhand
smoke, is a health hazard.
Not everyone agrees with that argument.
Its a bunch of hokum, said Michael Calucci, 29, of
Asbury Park, a former smoker. The whole thing with
getting cancer from secondhand smoke outdoors is go-
ing a bit overboard.
A2003 study by two epidemiologists from UCLA and
Stony Brook University concluded that exposure to en-
vironmental tobacco smoke is roughly equivalent to
smoking one cigarette per day.
Some smokers acknowledge that not everyone

Eight car dealerships in New Jersey, including Hy-
undai and Chrysler Jeep stores in Freehold Township,
and their owners will pay $1.8 million to settle an inves-
tigation into alleged bait-and-switch practices at the
dealerships.
The settlement, announced Monday by the state Di-
vision of Consumer Affairs, involves Freehold
Hyundai and Freehold Chrysler Jeep; Route 22 Honda,
Route 22 Toyota, Route 22 Nissan and Route 22 Kia, all
in Hillside; Hackettstown Honda and Hudson Honda in
West New York. All the dealerships are owned by Car-
melo Giuffre of Brooklyn and Ignazio Giuffre of Colts
Neck.
The dealerships and their owners will pay $1.8 mil-
lion to settle the case and provide an additional undeter-
mined amount of restitution, including refunds, to con-
sumers, the state said.
As part of the settlement, the dealership and owners,
which cooperated with the investigation, denied they
committed any violations of the states consumer fraud
or motor vehicle advertising regulations, according to
court papers.
The dealerships are now focused on transitioning to
a sales process called One Price, an alternative to nego-
tiations on purchase prices, after-market items and fi-
nancing, a spokesman for the dealerships said in a pre-
pared statement.
