1. Purpose of document
This document will provide brief background of internet of things and bring
out the challenges in an enterprises today with respect to their device data
utilization. Also, the document provides a concept to improve and discusses the
future framework of IOT. There are limited number of use cases discussed.
2. Background of Internet of things (IOT)

2.1 What it means

There are numerous definitions for the term internet of things. By breaking the
words in internet of things and analyzing will help us understand better.
Firstly, the word the internet refer to the world of World Wide Web. Secondly,
the word things require lot of deliberation.
On the one hand, for an inquisitive group it means everything that is tangible,
starting from miniscule object(s) in the domain nanotechnology to the massive
rockets can be referred as things. On the other hand, for other more restrictive
group, it means object(s) that they are interested in.
Another way of describing is as depicted in the figure below. It is the way of
describing objects with movability and size being the point of refrence.

Hence, a more subtle definition of IOT would be to introduce the Tangible
physical world to intangible virtual world and gather the data, analyze and
draw the information, thus built the knowledge and predict.
2.2 Visual Paradigm
The figure below depicts the international telecommunication unit (ITU) point of
view for IOT.

FIGURE 2:IUT VIEW OF IOT

Hence, the ITU has set a criteria/scope to term the internet of things. The
broadest point of view is anything should be connected anytime and at
anywhere.
2.3 Limitations
With the above definition and the scope of IOT, following are the limitation
1. There are huge number of devices that can be connected and massive amount
of data will be generated. Most of the analyzing needs to be done on an
instant basis. Hence, current technological maturity is major impediment.
2. Most of these devices or the things that are in physical world have sensors
with archaic protocols that are not compatible with Internet protocol.
3. In order to identify the things uniquely, there needs to be unique tags or
sensors. Sometimes, these sensors needs efficient power source. This adds to
the challenge of sustainable IOT model.

4. Many of these things or objects will have security and privacy concerns. To
illustrate, the person acting like a thing will have lot of privacy concerns.
3. Impediments in keeping enterprise efficient
There are various hurdles that come in the way to keep the enterprise optimal
performant. This document will focus on the problems of things
(instruments) in typical enterprise and its utilization
1. Each of these devices churns lot of data that needs to be analyzed and
predictable behaviour should be derived.
2. Each of the applications associated with the devices work in silos. Hence,
lot of useful data are lost.

4. Concept solution
Below figure is the typical solution for an enterprise with IOT framework
(Intranet of Things)

FIGURE 3: CONCEPT- ENTERPRISE WITH IOT FRAMEWORK
The figure illustrate, a physical world or tangible objects, these objects are brought to
the virtual world with various identifiers and sensors, like building access controllers,
lighting detection system etc. These identifiers will be capable of detecting the things
uniquely. Furthermore, there can be many bridges that these identifiers builds between
the physical and virtual world. For example, a sensor can not only detect temperature
of premises, but also the sense the presence of object size. Hence, multi-sense will
generate more data.
These Sensor data can be then feed to Enterprise Apps via system integrator layer. This
App will collates the data from various identifiers, processes these data into meaningful
knowledge base and the predicative model can be build.

Also, there can be feedback mechanism built-in to building management system (BMS)
or the DCS controller from the Enterprise APP.
A Typical example of usage for Enterprise IOT framework will be following
1. Through Access card into the building, the sensor framework can trigger the
Occupancy Enterprise APP.
2. The Occupancy App can predict the food requirement in the canteen, the power
requirement for Air conditions and other auxiliary system. Thus, reducing the
waste in the canteen and power requirement on daily basis.
Another example will be
1. Through natural light detecting sensor, the artificial Lights can be managed via
feedback controllers.
Thus, the above concept shows the value of things and intranet environment. This
concept can be extended to the city wide smart enterprise management or to maintain
the Industrial hub more efficiently.
5. Assumptions
Following are the assumptions -
1. The communication between the sensors and the enterprise Apps are simple
Internet protocol.
2. The Data that is churning out by the identifiers can be managed
3. Each objects or the things are identifiable.

2. Unique identifiable This is am identifier in real world where objects can be
identifiable
3. Identifier and sensor This is the readers or the sensor that converts the real
objects to virtual objects
4. Convertors A layer of unique protocol that has set of interfaces or services that
can be used by APPS
5. Enterprise Apps The Layer that converts the Data to intelligent applications
and feedback to controllers
