Microclimates:
How Location Impacts, Well, Everything!
Terroir. Its one of those words you hear used all the time, but
no one ever really stops to define their usage, and more than
sometimes, its used to cover up ignorance via pretense, which
drives me nuts. Terroir is easy enough to define: every decision
we make about location, varietal, trellising choices, amount of
irrigation, when and how we pick, when and how we ferment
you get the idea, I hope; thats all terroir. Its simply the total
environment and the decisions about that environment, from
planting to grapegrowing through to picking and winemaking.
And it all starts with where you decide to grow your wines years
before there are even grapes.
What makes a wine valley, anyway? While its true you can
grow grapes just about anywhere you can get water and soil
together, that doesnt mean youll end up with wine-quality grapes.
Napa was recognized quite early on in its settlement for what

WENTE VINEYARDS
Celebrating Five Generations in Wine in the Historic Livermore Valley
Livermore Valley, with its rich heritage and variety of wine tasting experiences,
should be a top destination that people consider when planning their next wine
country getaway. And as the countrys oldest, continuously operated familyowned winery and Californias First Family of Chardonnay, Wente Vineyards
would be a good place to start the journey. The winery, led by fourth and fifth
generation family members, has clearly proven their leadership both in
winegrowing and in being one of Californias premier wine country destinations.
This year, Wente Vineyards celebrates its 130th vintage anniversary. The
winery is located just east of San Francisco in the historic Livermore Valley. At the
historic Wente Vineyards Estate Winery & Tasting Room and Vineyard Tasting
Room, guests are offered two unique opportunities to experience the winemaking
process. Tours of the winery facility allow visitors to see an insiders view of the
Estate Winerys state-of-the-art equipment in operation, including the Small Lot
Winery. At the Vineyard Tasting Room, they can enjoy a special tasting and tour
in the historic sandstone caves.
The newly unveiled Winemakers Studio is yet another way for consumers to
learn more about wine. This state-of-the-art wine education studio offers an
intimate, behind-the-scenes look at grape growing, wine and food pairing, and
wine tasting experiences for both the wine novice and expert that they will
remember long after they have left the property.
This year, Wente Vineyards also celebrates its 28th anniversary of entertaining
guests with delicious wine country cuisine at The Restaurant at Wente Vineyards.
The Restaurant at Wente Vineyards uses locally grown organic ingredients
sourced within a 100-mile radius and features ingredient-driven California wine
country cuisine. While the menu holds its foundation in American dishes, it is

Albums chart.
The series will conclude on July 19 with singer-songwriter and
acoustic guitarist Colbie Caillat. A California native, Caillat broke
into the music scene in 2007 with her hit single Bubbly. The
Grammy-winners bright third album All of You will be the ideal
backdrop for the late summer soiree.
What began as a small venture in the arts with ticket prices just
under $5, the Robert Mondavi Winery Summer Concert Series has
evolved into a wine, food and music event that is a highlight of the
summer season in the Napa Valley. Robert Mondavi Winery has
played host to more than 100 performers and draws more extensive
crowds each summer, showcasing world-renowned and awardwinning R&B, jazz and pop artists alike.
Throughout the festivals 45-year history, more than $2 million
in proceeds has been raised to assist a number of Napa Valley-based
organizations. Proceeds from ticket sales of this years series will
directly benefit Napa Valley Music Programs.
All performances begin at 7 p.m. and are held at the Robert
Mondavi Winery at 7801 St. Helena Highway in Oakville, Napa
Valley. Tickets are on sale now. Prices vary by performance. For
additional information and to purchase tickets, including General
Admission, Patio, Reserved and Dinner seats, visit
www.robertmondaviwinery.com, eventbrite.com or call 1-888-7695299. All additional inquiries can be sent to

Twenty-Five Years of Russian River Valley Pinot and Smiles

Moshin Vineyards and Winery makes a small amount of many, many wines, and thats a
really good thing. Started in 1989 by then-San Jose math instructor Rick Moshin with the
purchase of ten acres of prime Pinot Noir vineyard in the Russian River Valley and the 200
cases of its first release, the winery today features a unique four-tier gravity flow design and
twenty-eight acres of vines, proof that dreams can come true with hard work and smart
planning, resulting in an annual production of 10,000 cases at year twenty-five.
Pinot Noir and its need for delicate handling have guided everything about todays
winery, the goal being, in Ricks words, a wine that expresses a truthful view into the heart
of the vine. To do this, all farming is sustainable to support vineyard health, the
winemaking is conducted as unobtrusively as possible, and the winery itself facilitates
energy conservation via its gravity flow design. The result is an array of small bottlings of
Chardonnay, Merlot, Motion Potion Dessert Wines, Petite Sirah, Pinot Gris, Sauvignon
Blanc, and Zinfandel, in addition to the multiple Pinot Noirs, and, unsurprisingly, just about
everything has done extremely well at international wine competitions.
The bright and airy tasting room is open every day except Christmas Day and New Years
Day from 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and the tasting fee is refundable with a purchase. Tours of
the winery and explanation of its design philosophy are also available by appointment, with
part of the fee also waived with purchases. The staff is truly friendly in the way that makes
Sonoma County the very different wine country that it is, and I defy anyones claim of not
finding something to enjoy amongst the winerys offerings. In other words, there are a lot of
reasons theyre at the quarter-century mark.

Judds HiLL
Winery and Microcrush
32
Do you have a passion for wine? Have you dreamt about having your
name on your own label? If the answer is yes, then you need to pay a visit
to Judds Hill Winery and MicroCrush. Nestled amongst the vineyards on
the famed Silverado Trail, this small, family-owned winery offers a fun,
personalized and educational experience for would be vintners.
According to Food and Wine Magazine, Judds Hill is THE place for
custom winemaking in Napa Valley. And 2014 marks their 25th year of
making hand-crafted, ultra-premium, custom wine for everyone from
grape growers and wine enthusiasts, to budding wine entrepreneurs.
Their success and longevity in the field of personal winemaking stems
from a unique service that they offer. Where most custom crush facilities
require large minimums, often between 5-10 tons of fruit, Judds Hill
specializes in small-lots, as little as a half-ton. These small one barrel
minimums set them apart from the others and have created a home for
those vintners with smaller production needs.
Dubbed The Pioneer in Personal Winemaking, Judds Hill founder,
Art Finkelstein, began his journey into small-lot winemaking when a
neighbor asked him to make a barrel of single-vineyard wine from his
grapes, in order to showcase his fruit. Over the years, word of this service
spread to other grape growers in Napa and beyond and business grew.
Twenty five years later Judds Hill MicroCrush is the popular choice not
only for grape growers, but backyard vineyard owners and enthusiasts
who are looking to share their wine with family and friends. It has also
become a great way for businesses to market their company in a unique
way and a place for entrepreneurs to create their own small wine brands.
At Judds Hill you do not need to be a winemaker, because they do it
all for you. They offer all-inclusive, expert winemaking services from the
time you bring in your fruit until the time its bottled. If you dont have
your own fruit, its not a problem. With over 30 years in the wine
industry, Judds Hill has been able to establish long-term relationships
with growers around the Napa Valley (and beyond) and is able to source

Pinot Noir inspires unbelievable loyalty. Its a clich in todays wine world
for a reason: the most passionate producers are totally gaga over producing
the best Pinot Noir they can, and Diane and Ken Wilson, the founders of
Matrix Winery, and several other wineries under the umbrella Wilson Family
Wine Estates, are absolutely dedicated to producing vineyard-driven wines.
It is this commitment to the stewardship and sustainable farming of the
Russian River and Dry Creek Valleys which drives everything Matrix Winery
produces.
Honored as Woman Winemaker of the Year in 2008, and winning
multiple back-to-back Sonoma County Harvest Fair and San Francisco
Chronicle Sweepstakes, Diane Wilson is a guiding light for the Sonoma
County wine industry. These highly-regarded awards, coupled with dozens
of 90+ scores and over 100 Gold Medals, demonstrate Dianes strong track
record as an outstanding winemaker. She says, My goal is to maximize the
fruit flavor of the grape, making sure each wine has a front, a middle and a
back, so it produces a full, rich mouth feel. It is all about balance.
The best place to sample that balance is at the Matrix Tasting Room in
Healdsburg; the Sip Sip Lounge is open daily from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., offering
panoramic views of the Russian River Valley through expansive windows to
accompany the critically acclaimed wines: multiple bottlings of Chardonnay,
Petite Sirah, Pinot Noir, Primitivo, Ros, Sauvignon Blanc and Zinfandel, as
well as several vintner blends. Its cozy atmosphere and friendly tasting staff
create a unique and personal wine experience not found in the larger spots,
and enjoying wines while gazing at the undulating vineyards is quite
memorable.
Additionally, for those wanting something truly distinct, the full range of
the Wilson Family Wines Estates come into play in the VIP Tour Package,
where you decide which four of the eight properties you wish to visit. This
VIP tour includes a wine educator, who will guide you through the four-hour
tour in a luxury limousine. Plus, at the winery of your choice, youll enjoy a
picnic that includes two bottles of wine for the group and a delicious box
lunch from the famed Costeaux French Bakery. See their website for all the
details: matrixwinery.com.
The winery also has several events coming up later this year youll not want
to miss. September 6th brings the annual Pups & Pinot New Release Party
where participants can be the first to try eight (thats not a typo!) new Pinot
Noir releases and well-behaved dogs on a leash are welcomed. RSVP by
August 31st to andreanna@matrixwinery.com to guarantee a spot. Equally,
October 18th provides the opportunity to attend the annual Winemaker
Vineyard Picnic, a day of sun, gourmet food, and delicious Pinot Noir. Be a
part of this exciting annual event and celebrate the fall Matrix style in the
vineyard with the winemaking team. Reserve your spot at this annual event by
emailing andreanna@matrixwinery.com.
One can easily point to the huge numbers of high scores and gold medals
Matrix has received, but that tells you nothing about the experience of being
at the winery itself. There, the emphasis is on the appreciation of the wines
and the vineyards which create them. Do yourself a favor and stop in when
you next get a chance: youll be glad you did theyre Tasting Room of the
Week for a reason! Enjoy.

Spencer spent the winter of 2014 in the studio working on his fifth albumDaybreak, set for release on
May 6, 2014. The album is filled with a selection of classic tunes from the 60s, in addition to five original
songs that pay homage to the era. The whole album is really a reflection of where I stand at this
moment; more happy than Ive ever been in my adult life.

The Best Way to Start Your Day!
BY ALExANDRA CHARSLEY

Greeting you at the doorway to Sonoma wine country sits one of its jewels,
Gloria Ferrer Caves and Vineyards, the first sparkling wine house built in
Carneros. Sparkling wine is the perfect choice for celebrating special occasions,
but because its so food friendly, its ideal for everyday enjoyment and a visit here is
the best way to start your day!
Gloria Ferrer Caves and Vineyards takes great pride in partnering with
organizations and programs with goals that align with their core values and
interests. They support non-profit organizations in Sonoma County and throughout
the San Francisco Bay Area that strengthen the community. For over a decade,
Gloria Ferrer has partnered with Sonoma Valleys WillMar Family Grief and Healing
Center to raise funds for bereaved children while promoting sustainable agriculture.
All of the proceeds of the two vintages of limited-production Pinot Noir will be
donated to the Center. Only 100 cases of each of the 2011 and 2012 vintages were
bottled. This exclusive, handcrafted Pinot Noir yields from carefully tended estate
Carneros Vineyards. Original art graces the bottles with labels designed by young
talented WillMar artists. These images are also available in poster size sold in the
tasting room.
In addition to these exclusive wines and specialty artwork, the Gloria Ferrer
vineyard crew make blue bird boxes as used in the vineyards and donate them to
WillMar for the children to paint. Once painted, they are returned to Gloria Ferrer
and made available for purchase in the tasting room with 100% of the proceeds
going back to the WillMar Center.
Honoring their commitment to education, Gloria Ferrer is also a generous

WCtW: Whats your favorite local restaurant and what do you like to order?
Js: My favorite restaurant is KIN in Windsor. When I go there, I get the Purist Pizza. The pizza is
based on a recipe from Lombardis in New York, which is one of the oldest pizzerias in
America. The pizza is very simple. It uses freshly sliced mozzarella cheese (not shredded),
homemade sauce and fresh basil. While the ingredients are basic, the flavors are intense and
very pleasurable.
WCtW: If you are meeting a friend for cocktails, where do you go?
Js: I like to go to Jack and Tonys in Railroad Square (Santa Rosa). They have a great happy hour
and I love the atmosphere.
WCtW: What do you do for fun?
Js: If I am not playing with my kids, I try to play as much golf a possible. My favorite course in
Sonoma County is Fountaingrove Golf Club.
WCtW: Wheres the best place to relax in Wine Country?
Js: I would have to say spending Thursday nights in the summer at the Windsor Town Green is
great. We meet up with all of our friends and family, listen to live music, talk, eat and hang out.
WCtW: Whats your favorite meal and bottle of wine to enjoy at home?
Js: I really enjoy barbecuing on my deck, while my kids are running around having fun. Typically
we are grilling hamburgers. I like to drink our Rodney Strong Dry Creek Zinfandel with them.
I think it is a great pairing.
WCtW: What other places do you like to hang out?
Js: I love going out to lunch at Wurst in Healdsburg. They have great hot dogs, which I love.
JustiN seideNFeLd
I also like going to Spring Lake and taking a walk, or visiting Keiser Park playground in
Windsor. These are great places to hang out with my family, and we all enjoy it.
WCtW: Whats an interesting fact that most people dont know about you?
RODNEY STRONG VINEYARDS
Js: I love to build things out of wood. I started out with a farmhouse dining room table and a

the reasons I love to make wine. Seeing the process from start to finish fascinates me.
Rocco Ceselin
ABout: Justin Seidenfelds winemaking career began in 2005 when he was an intern at Iron Horse Winery. There, the regular work of the cellar kicked
off a quick rise in winemaking responsibilities that landed him a job at the venerable Robert Mondavi Winery. In 2006, Justin graduated from the
University of California, Davis with a B.S. in Viticulture & Enology. He began working for Rodney Strong in the spring of 2010 and works alongside
veteran winemaker, Rick Sayre, in the winerys main cellar. As to his inspiration to become a winemaker, Justin notes, People recalling the occasions that
wine makes better and memorable is the reason I make wine. Hearing about how and when someone enjoyed a wine I made inspires me.

WCtW: Whats your favorite local restaurant and what do you like to order?
rM: Its a toss-up between Ume Japanese Bistro where I would order the Hamachi Collar and
the Old Redwood Roll or the Russian River Pub I can go in there during harvest covered
in grape juice and relax with a beer and a burger.
WCtW: Where do you go for coffee and a pastry?
rM: Wherever the wife takes me shes the one drinking the coffee. Probably the Flying Goat,
Parish Caf or Chloes French Caf.
WCtW: If you are meeting a friend for cocktails, where do you go?
rM: Healdsburg has some nice bars with great cocktails Willis Wine Bar, Mateos Cucina
Latina for margaritas or SpoonBar.
WCtW: What do you do for fun?
rM: Boating on the lake, fishing, hiking and mushroom hunting.
WCtW: Wheres the best place to relax in Wine Country?
rM: I like to relax at the coast sipping Sauvignon Blanc and slurping oysters after a walk along
the shore or on a picnic after a hike with a cold bottle of ros.
WCtW: Whats an interesting fact that most people dont know about you?
rM: I taught math for 26 years.
ABout: Rick Moshins fascination with fermentation began with homemade beer, but he soon turned his
attention to wine. A former San Jose State University math instructor, Rick made prudent use of his math
skills to design a four-tier gravity flow winery for small-lot wine production at Moshin Vineyards.
Acquiring a vineyard was a dream that became a reality for him in 1989 when he and his family decided
to purchase a 10-acre Pinot Noir vineyard in Sonoma County. His goal for producing the highest quality
wines inspired him to grow this endeavor into a full-fledged winery.
