1. InserttheCDintotheopticaldrive.TheCDopensautomatically.

3. Readthelicenseagreement.Youmaychoosetoprintandsaveitforyourrecords.
ClickContinuetoproceed.
4. ClickAgreetoacceptthelicenseagreementandproceedwithinstallation.
5. Selectadestinationdrive.ClickContinue.
Whenthesystemhascompletedtheinstallation,itautomaticallyopensyourWeb
browsertowww.dolbysupport.com.Thesiteallowsyoutoopenanaccount,ifyouhave
notalreadydoneso,andtoregisteryourproduct.Registeringyourproductallowsyou
toreceivetechnicalsupportandnoticeoffutureupgrades.
6. Whenyouareready,closethetechnicalsupportwindowandclickCloseonthe

Meter\Dolby Media Meter,thenplacesiconsonthedesktopandundertheStartmenu.
Note: DolbyMediaMeter2isautomaticallyinstalledintotheApplications/Dolby Media
ProducerfolderontheMacintosh

harddrive.Youmaymoveitafterinstallation.

Measuring Loudness
3.1 Measuring Equivalent Loudness
Differencesinaudiolevelsbetweenprogramsandchannelsorbetweenprogramsand
commercialsareamajorannoyancetoTVviewers.Whileobvioustotheviewer,these
loudnessdifferenceshaveprovendifficulttomeasurewithconventionalmethodsand
equipment.
Foryears,theaudioindustryhasquantifiedthelevelofitsprogrammingusingpeak
programmeters(PPM)andvolumeunit(VU)meters.Itisimportanttonotethatbothwere
developedandareusedtoreadsignalvoltages,andthereforemakenoattempttomeasure
subjectiveloudness.Thus,severaldifferentvoices,adjustedinlevelsothattheyalldeflect
meterstothesamemark,maysoundsomewhatdifferentinleveltothelistenerathome.
Thisproblemisoftencompoundedbytherapidresponseofthemeter,whichrequiresall
operatorstoperformtheirownindividualvisualintegrationoraveragingofthemeter
movementitself.

MediaMeter2featuresDialogueIntelligence

technology,adoptedfromthe
awardwinningDolbyDP600ProgramOptimizer,whichautomaticallydetectsandthen
measuresloudnessonlyduringthepresenceofspeechinanaudiotrack.Enabling
DialogueIntelligenceallowstheoperatortosimplyquantifyallthesectionsoftheprogram
thatonlycontaineddialogueandusetheendingmeasurementvalueforanalysisand/or
normalizationpurposes.Thisvalueisalsocommonlyusedtosetthedialogue
normalizationparameterwithinDolbybitstreams.

TheDolbyMediaMeter2hastwomodesrelatingtothemeasurementperioditself:Infinite
modeandShortTermmode.Thefollowingsectionsdescribetheirbehavior.
3.2.1 Infinite Mode

istypicallyusedwhenitispossibletomeasuretheentiredurationofthe
program(forexample,all30secondsofacommercialoracompletetwohourmovie).
Infinitemodeprovidesthemostaccuratemeasurement,asitisabletoaverageloudness
overthecompleteprogramlength.Thismodeismostoftenusediningest,qualitycontrol
(QC),andpostproductionapplicationswhereaudiometadataisbeingauthoredandlevels
can,inmostcases,becontrolledandadjusted.
ItisalsopossibletouseInfinitemodetomeasureshorterindividualsectionsofaprogram
ratherthantheentireduration.Thismethodmayallowtheoperatortofindameasurement
valuemuchmorequickly.Inthiscase,however,theoperatormustensurethattheloudness
levelsofthesectionsbeingmeasuredarerepresentativeoftheentireprogram.
3.2.2 Short-Term Mode
ShortTermmodedisplaysthemeasuredvalueforthepreviousfewsecondsasasliding
windowtypeoffunction.UsingDialogueIntelligence,forexample,thefirstmeasurement
valueisforthetimebetween0and10seconds,thenextbetween1and11seconds,next
between2and12seconds,andsoforth.UsingEBUR128,themeasurementsareforthree
seconds,ratherthanten.
AstheShortTermmodemeasuresonlytheimmediatelyprecedingtensecondsofprogram
material,themeasurementvaluehasthepotentialtobemuchmoredynamicthanthevalue

EBUR128usesthetermIntegratedinsteadofInfinite.

providedbyInfinitemodemeasurementforthesamecontent.(Highlyprocessedchannels
andprogrammingwillmostlikelynotexhibitthistypeofbehavior.)
ThebenefitofmeasuringinShortTermmodeisthattheoperatorcanseeshortterm
variationsinloudnesslevel(orshorttermvariationsindialoguelevelwhenDialogue
Intelligenceisenabled)withinaprogram.Manyskilledaudiooperatorsprefertousethe
ShortTermmodemeasurement,astheyfindtheinformationonneartermdynamicstobe
veryusefulwhenmixingorproducingaprogram,andtheyarecapableofmanaging
overallprogramloudnessbyreadingtheshorttermmeasure.
ShortTermmodeisalsoveryusefulformeasuringandloggingthedynamicloudness
historyofagivenprogramduringtheQCorpostproductionprocess,orinaparticular
televisionserviceorchannelinacableheadendfacility.
Choosing a Short-Term Window Length
Somestandardsallowachoiceofshorttermwindowlength,eitherthreeortenseconds.

3.3 Measuring with the Stand-Alone Product
ThestandaloneDolbyMediaMeter2applicationmeasuressourceandencodedfiles.The
softwareanalyzestheinput,thendisplaysthemeasuredresultsforuseindeterminingthe
properdi al nor mmetadatavaluetouseduringencoding.ThisisusefulforDVDand
BlurayDisc

postproduction,broadcastfacilities,videoondemand(VOD),movie
downloadservices,andvideogames.
Beforeyoubegintomeasure,checkthedefaultvaluesontheDolbyMediaMetersettings
screendiscussedinChapter 4.

1. ClicktochooseeitherSource filesoranEncoded file.
2. Identifytheinputfileorfiles,eitherbybrowsingthenetwork,orbytypingafilename
andlocationintothenamefield.
AsinotherDolbyMediaProducerapplications,thefileselectorisintelligent.When
youdoubleclickasourcefile,DolbyMediaMeter2recognizesandselectstheentire
setwhenthesetfollowsthenamingconventionsdescribedinSection 3.6.
3. ClickEnableifyouwanttocreatealogfileofthismeasurement.Reviewthedefault
logfilenameandlocation,andmakeanyrequiredmodifications.
Bydefault,theDolbyMediaMeter2nameslogfiles
input file name-LoudnessEstimation.csvandsavesthefileinthedirectorywheretheinput
filesarestored.SeeSection 5.1formoredetailsaboutthelogfunction.
4. ClickSpecify Rangetomeasureonlypartoftheselectedfile.

Unlessarangeisspecifiedhere,DolbyMediaMeter2measurestheentirefile.If
timecodeisembeddedinthefiles,themeterwilldefaulttotimecode;iftimecodeisnot
present,thethemeterwilldefaulttorealtime.Highlighteitherorboththebeginning
andendfields,andtypenewvaluestochangethem.DolbyMediaMeter2supportsall
commonvideoframerates,aswellasframes,seconds,andsamples,inadditionto
realtimemeasurement.
5. ClickMeasuretostartprocessing.
DolbyMediaMeter2displaysapercentagecompletetallyandprogressbarduring
processing.Duringmeasurement,theMeasurebuttonchangestoCancel.
Whenmeasuringencodedfiles,DolbyMediaMeter2candisplayuptofourdifferent
measurementtypessimultaneously,asshowninFigure 34.Choosethefromthenine
availableoptionsbyrightclickinginameasurementbox.
Whenmeasurementfinishes,youcanreadthelog(asdescribedinSection 5.1)orviewa
graph(asdescribedinSection 5.2).
Additional Selectors for Dolby TrueHD and Dolby E
WhenaDolbyTrueHDfileischosen,DolbyMediaMeter2displaystheadditionalselector
showninFigure 35,allowingyoutochoosewhichpresentationDolbyMediaMeter2
shouldmeasure.Theselectorlistsonlyindependentanddownmixedpresentations.
Copiesarenotdisplayed,astheirvaluewouldbeidenticaltothepresentationofwhich
theywereacopy.

WhenaDolbyEfilecontainingmorethanoneprogramisselected,DolbyMediaMeter2
allowsyoutochoosewhichprogramDolbyMediaMeter2shouldmeasure.Theselector
listsonlytheprogramsthatexistintheselectedDolbyEstream.
Inbothcases,measurementdoesnotproceeduntilyouhaveindicatedachoice.

time,lettingyoutracklevelsduringthemixingprocesstoaidinmeetingnetworkdelivery
requirements.DolbyMediaMeter2cansimultaneouslydisplayuptosevenofthenine
possiblemeasurementsdescribedinSection 4.6.Chooseameasurementtodisplayby
rightclickinginameasurementboxandchoosingfromthecontextmenu.Figure 36
showsapluginexample.
Note: LargeDolbyTrueHDfilesmaytakealittlelongertoopenthanotherfiletypes
becauseMediaMeter2mustexaminetheentirefilebeforebeginningtomeasureit.

DolbyMediaMeter2RTASorVSTplugininsertionisperformedonachannelbychannel
basisoninputchannels.Onoutputbuses,themetermaybeinsertedonmono,stereo,or
multichannelbuses.Thenumberofinstancesisnotlimited.
WhenyoumeasurewiththeRTASandVSTplugins,DolbyMediaMeter2doesnotadd
totheinfinitevaluewhilethesessionisstoppedorpaused.Youcanmovealongthesession
timelineandaddtotheinfiniteaveragebyplayingthroughdifferentsections.Doingso
allowsyoutoaverageovertheentiretimeyouworkonyoursession.Inaddition,thelog
filewillreferencethemeasuremententrieswithanindicationofboththetimecodeofthe
partofthesessionbeingmeasuredandthetimeofdaythemeasurementwastaken.
WhenyoumeasurewiththeRTASandVSTplugins,thegraphisdisplayedinrealtime,
lettingyouseeexactlywhatishappening.
Resetting Measurements
ClickReset Alltorestarttheallmeasurements.ClickReset Avgtoresetonlytheinfinite
measurement.ResetthedialoguerangeandpeakmeasurementsbyclickingtheReset
buttonbeneaththeappropriatereadout.ClickingView Logdisplaysthelogfile.
3.5 Measuring with the AudioSuite Plug-In
TheDolbyMediaMeter2AudioSuitepluginperformsfilebasedmeasurement,idealfor
measuringdi al nor mvaluesoroverallloudnesswhilepreparingaudioforpackagedmedia
formats.
WhenmeasuringwiththeAudioSuitemeter,youcanselectasectionofyoursessionto
measureinnonrealtimeandpresstheProcessbutton.Toaveragethemeasurementsof
differentsections,selectanewsectionofyourtimeline,andpresstheProcessbuttonagain.
Thatsectionwillbeaveragedintothepreviousmeasurement.Ifyoudonotwishtoaverage
thedifferentsections,simplypresstheResetbuttonbeforepressingtheProcessbutton.
Ifyouchoosetocreatealogfile,thelogfilewillreferencethemeasuremententrieswithan
indicationofboththetimecodeofthepartofthesessionbeingmeasuredandthetimeof
daythemeasurementwasmade.Thiswillallowyoutotellwhichpartofyoursessionis
representedbythegivenmeasurement.
TheAudioSuiteplugincandisplaycansimultaneouslydisplayuptosevenofthenine
possiblemeasurementsdescribedinSection 4.6.Chooseameasurementtodisplayby
rightclickinginameasurementboxandchoosingfromthecontextmenu.
Note: ProToolsalwaysinsertsbothRTASandAudioSuitepluginsasprefader.
Measurementswillnotcorrectlymatchthefinalmixedoutputifthemeteris
insertedontheinputsectionofProToolswhenmixautomationispresent.
Note: Whenmeasuringmultichannelinputchannels,besuretoselectthechannel
routinginthesettingwindowthatmatchesyoursession.

Measuring Loudness
TomeasurefasterthanrealtimeintheAudioSuiteplugin:
1. ClickResettorestartthemeasurements.
2. ClickLog FiletogenerateandsavealogofDolbyMediaMeter2activity.Reviewthe
defaultfilenameandlocation,andmakeanynecessarychanges.
3. Choosethedesiredmeasurementtypes,byrightclickinginameasurementboxand
choosinganotheroptionfromthecontextmenu.
3.6 File-Naming Conventions That Ensure Automatic File
Selection
DolbyMediaMeter2automaticallyselectssourcefilesetsthatfollowthesenamingrules:
1. AllthechannelIDsusedarestandard.ThechannelIDsarenotcasesensitive.
2. ThechannelIDisseparatedbeforeandafterwitheitheraperiodorunderscore.
3. ThefilenamesforthechannelsareidenticalexceptforchannelID.
4. ThenumberoffilesmatchesthenumberofchannelsselectedintheclientChannels
tab.
5. ThefilechannelIDsmatchthechannelIDsselectedintheclientChannelstab.
6. Filenamesdonotcontaintheampersand(&)character.
