Purpose
This survey provides a gauge of public sentiment towards the Montgomery County
Public School System and its administration over the last year. This survey and the
resulting data will be contrasted with the results from similar annual surveys conducted
in the initial year of each of the previous four superintendents.
Methodology
representative group of Montgomery County residents over the age of 1! years old
were randomly as"ed to participate. #ive hundred eighteen respondents participated in
this survey resulting in a confidence level of $% percent with a confidence interval of
plus or minus &.' percent. The survey was conducted from March ' through pril 2&(
2)1&. *ver &! percent of the respondents had a child or grandchild in the system and
over %6 percent were between the ages of 1! and %% years old. ccording to the
Census +ureau in 2)1'( the median age in Montgomery County was '%. ,n addition( %-
percent of those ta"ing the survey were frican merican( in line with the 2)1' Census
of %6.' percent. .omen made up 6! percent of those participating.

/ #ive hundred eighteen Montgomery residents over the age of 1! years old participated
in this year0s survey. *ver &! percent of these respondents had a child or grandchild in
the Montgomery County Public School System.
/ 1early 12 percent of the respondents had a child or grandchild with special needs that
was attending public school. *nly '&.% percent of those respondents said that their child
was receiving the necessary support.
/ .hen as"ed to rate the Montgomery Public School System only 2!.6 percent of
participants rated it good or e2cellent and nearly '2 percent rated it as bad.
/ .hen as"ed to rate the school board( only 22.! percent of participants rated it as good
or e2cellent and over '2 percent rated it as bad.
/ .hen as"ed to rate the leadership of the board( 2%.& percent rated it good or e2cellent
and 2! percent rated it bad.
/ .hen respondents were as"ed to rate first year superintendent( Margaret llen( ').%
percent said she was doing a good or e2cellent 3ob and another '-.! percent said they
li"ed her ideas but needed time to see the results. *nly 2.' percent of those surveyed
said she was doing a poor 3ob. .hen compared to the previous three superintendents0
first year rating( her good to e2cellent rating was close to the best and her negative
rating was the lowest ever surveyed.
/ .hen the survey results were analy4ed in terms of those who had children in the school
system and those who did not( the public perception of those groups varied widely. .hile
'6.- percent of those with children in the schools gave it a good to e2cellent rating( only
21 percent of those without children attending public school agreed.
/ 5i"ewise( 2&.- percent of respondents with children in public school rated the system as
bad compared to '!.6 percent of those without children in the system.

/ .hen rating the school board( 2-.1 percent of participants with children in the public
school said good to e2cellent compared to 1!.- percent of those with no children in the
system.
/ .hen rating the superintendent( 2$.1 percent of those with children in the system said
good to e2cellent compared to '1.$ percent of those who did not have a child in school.
*nly two percent of those with children in the Montgomery public schools said she was
doing a poor 3ob and only 2.6 percent of those with no children in public schools agreed.
