configure the system to emit
an acoustic signal whenever
you place an undefined point.
Allplan scans for points within a radius you define about the
crosshairs. This means that when you point or click in the workspace,
the system "snaps" to points within the distance you have specified
(= snap radius), even if the center of the crosshairs is not placed
directly over the point.
You can set the size of the snap radius and the drawing files the
system is to scan for points in the
Point Entry Options.

Exercise 5: Project
Organization
Allplans Data Structure
A project is an organizational unit. A new project is created for each
construction project in Allplan. A project consists of the following
elements:
Drawing files
Drawing files are the equivalent of the transparencies used in
conventional building design. The actual design and data creation
process happens in drawing files. You can show or hide
individual drawing files.
Drawing file 15
Drawing file 3
Drawing file 2
Drawing file 1
60
Allplan 2005
Example: The axis grid and the various floor plans of the stories
in a building are drawn on separate drawing files so that you can
superimpose the drawing files as required, thus showing or hiding
the floor plans and the axis grid independently from one another.
Filesets:
A fileset is a convenient way of grouping together a series of
drawing files for example, the drawing files of a construction
stage.
Layouts:
Drawing elements and assembling layouts are separate operations
in Allplan. As opposed to design using a conventional drafting
board, the scope of the layout does not have to be defined in
advance. Generally, you leave the layout (which involves
arranging and laying out drawing files and/or filesets) until
youre finished with the design. Layouts are set up based on
filesets and/or single drawing files.

Understanding layers
Layers provide an additional means of applying a structure - within
drawing files. Metaphorically speaking, a layer is a transparency on
which design elements belonging to a specific category (load-bearing
walls, non-bearing walls) are drawn. Layers can be set so that they
are visible or hidden.
The use of layers obviates the need for frequent switching between
drawing files and they ensure that associative elements - such as
wall dimensions or sill elevation labels - reside in the same drawing
file and yet can still be hidden from view.
Allplan provides a very extensive layer structure called
ARCHITECTURE. This layer structure is designed to meet a broad
range of requirements. In addition, you can customize it for your
needs. When you activate a tool, the corresponding layer is assigned
automatically. But you can also select the active layer manually.
Layers come with various predefined format properties (linetype
etc.). To configure the system to apply these properties automatically
to the entire project, do the following.
Solution
To set layers
1 Click
Tip: Once you have made
these basic settings, you can

Select, Set Layers list box

having to open the Layer
dialog box.

Allplan 2005
77
78
Allplan 2005
You can set the properties for components in special, componentspecific dialog boxes before you draw a component, while you are
doing this or after you have created it. The process of creating a
legend including all the intended wall and component types and
saving it as a special file, known as Wizard, has proven to be
useful in practice.
The Wizard is a small viewport with a legend including all the
functions frequently used. Simply click an element with the right
mouse button to open the shortcut menu which contains similar or
related functions.
79
Overview
Allplan comes with some predefined Wizards, which are saved in the
office's standard path in the

The top of the finished floor is +/- 0.00 m. All the other height
settings are based on this value. The slab is 18 cm thick and the
thickness of the floor covering is 15 cm.
The story height is 2.75 m and the top and bottom levels of the walls
are associated with the upper and lower reference planes so that they
are flush. Based on this information, the height can be defined as
follows:
103
2 Switch to
3 Click
4 In the Default Planes dialog box, set the Input method to Modify
entries with the same height together.
104

5 Change the height of the lower default reference plane for one
drawing file.
To do this, click the box below Default lower plane, enter 0.150
m and press ENTER to confirm.
105
106

The bottom of the glass wall is associated with the lower reference
plane so that it is flush. In other words, it is 15 cm lower than the
top of the finished floor and thus 15 cm below the floor covering.
But as the bottom of the glass wall is to rest on the finished floor,
the height association needs to be redefined.
107
As the slab above the first floor (d = 18 cm) is to rest on the inner
tier of the exterior wall whereas plaster, column and chimney are to
be flush with the top of the slab above the first floor, the height
setup relative to the upper reference plane needs to be changed for
these elements.

109
Now the coat of plaster, column and chimney are 18 cm higher than
the interior walls and the load-bearing tier of the exterior wall. Only
the height of the coat of plaster of the wall toward the terrace will
remain unchanged, as the slab, which will be applied later, will also
cover the outline of the terrace.
The bottom of the glass wall toward the terrace is now 15 cm above
the top of the unfinished floor. This is clearly visible when you view
your design from the inside:

The reveal defines the depth of the reveal on the inside and outside
of the opening, and consequently the position of the window in the
opening.
Defining these values precisely is not only significant from a
graphics standpoint: the reveal depths are also taken into account in
subsequent quantity takeoff operations.
