Facts about Genetically Modified Foods

What are Genetically Modified Foods?


Genetically modified foods contain unnatural grown ingredients that are usually prompted by
using unnatural remedies on animals, bacteria viruses, and by altering the DNA of organisms.
Common uses of genetic modified foods include the following: soy beans, maize, cotton, and
rapeseed oil.
Bacteria and/or virus genes are forced into the DNA of crops such as, soy and corn.
Farmers inject or implant growth hormones to their animals in order for them to produce the
desired product.

Why Isnt Genetically Modified Foods Regulated Thoroughly By the FDA, EPA, and USDA?
The FDA, EPA, and USDA all regulate different aspects of the genetic modified food.
The FDA regulates the plant and tests to see if the plant is eatable.
The EPA regulates the genetic modified plants and tests to see if its environmentally safe.
The USDA regulates the plant and its healthiness to see if its safe to grow.
Together, these three agencies dont regulate the finish product; thus, they arent aware of the
state and condition of the processed foods when theyre sold at the groceries.

Should America Start Labeling Genetically Modified Foods?
Dan Quayles 1992 policy regarding genetically engineered crops was rapidly refuted by the
FDAs scientists, stating that genetically engineered crops are substantially equivalent to regular
crops; hence, they dont have to be labeled or safety tested.
In 2012, an opposition campaign in California was campaign to defeat Proposition 37, which
proposed labeling of foods containing GMOs.
The final tally of votes as certified by Californias Secretary of State was 6, 088,714 in favor
of Proposition 37 and 6,442,371 against. A scant difference of 353, 657 votes.
GMO Labeling is endorsed by: American Public Health Association, American Medical Students
Association, American Academy of Environmental Medicine, Physicians for Social
Responsibility, California chapters, California Nurses Association and other leading health
organizations

Are Genetically Modified Foods Safe or Dangerous to Consume?
In-depth studies nor long-term studies have been done to prove either
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration dont find it necessary for independent studies to be
done regarding the safety of genetically engineered foods.
