The Bessie Mae Womens Health Center first open its doors 2012, at 190 South Harrison
Street East Orange NJ. After the first year we relocated due to the expansion of services
and extended hours for the community. We moved to our new location at 220 South
Harrison Street, East Orange NJ where our patient visits went from having zero to 652
patients. In 2014, our second year, we have grown to 1,270 patients with way over 1,500
encounters. We have created 26 partnerships (see end of newsletter), with 19 E-newsletters,
this one makes up number 20.
Bessie Mae Womens and Family Health Center began with 1,900 sq. feet. We now have
two sites. The main site at 220 South Harrison Street, East Orange NJ 07018 has 3,000 sq.
ft. Our new site located at 852-18th Avenue, Irvington NJ 07111 is 1,100 sq. ft. And our
third new site in Newark will open this year in mid August. We are extremely happy and
proud for the growth and being able to provide services to our community right within our
community! Thanks to our partners and your support, we will be able to continue
providing services and helping our community on their journey to better health.

munch on the low calorie, crunchy foods

*Tip Simple food swap outs, or
controlling your portons, can save your

gathering. Sit with your family and
friends to enjoy their company and enjoy
a glass of ice-cold water with lemon and

World Hepatitis Day is an annual event on the
28th July that provides international focus for patient
groups and people living with viral hepatitis. It is an
opportunity to raise awareness and influence real
change in disease prevention and access to testing and
treatment.

Who organizes World Hepatitis Day?
World Hepatitis Day was launched by the World
Hepatitis Alliance in 2008 in response to the concern
that chronic viral hepatitis did not have the level of
awareness, nor the political priority, seen with other
communicable diseases such as HIV/AIDS,
tuberculosis and malaria. In May 2010 the World
Health Assembly passed resolution
WHA63.18 on viral hepatitis which provides official
endorsement of World Hepatitis Day. Since 2010
World Hepatitis Day has been coordinated by the
World Hepatitis Alliance in collaboration with the
WHO.

What goes on?
Every year World Hepatitis Day gets bigger and
bigger, with more countries and organizations taking
part. Since its launch in 2008, thousands of events
have taken place, from rock concerts and press
briefings to ministerial meetings and fundraising
events. In 2012 the World Hepatitis Alliance
organized a Guinness World Record attempt for the
most people performing the see no evil, hear no evil,
speak no evil actions within 24 hours. For more
information about whats going on this year and to get
inspiration from previous events, visit our World
Hepatitis Day 2013 and WHD archive pages.
Where is it?
World Hepatitis Day events take place all over the
world. Contact us to find out details of events near
you, or you could even set up an event of your own!
We've got all the materials here online to help you get
started, including posters, logos and flier designs.
When is World Hepatitis Day?
World Hepatitis Day is recognized every year on the
28th July. This date was chosen to mark the birthday
of Professor Baruch Blumberg, awarded the Nobel
Prize for his work in discovering the hepatitis B virus.
He said: It's good to know that my birthday will be
remembered in this unusual and unexpected way. We
never thought this would happen when we were
studying a strange protein from Australia.

This month of understanding offers organizations of all backgrounds the great opportunity to create mental
health awareness in diverse communities. The goal of NMMHAM is to improve access to mental health
treatment and services through increased public awareness. Since 2008, organizations have hosted a range of
events and activities to shed light on the mental health issues facing diverse communities throughout the
country.
Reinforcing the importance of this month of awareness, National Alliance www.eachmindmatters.org/. on
Mental Illness (NAMI) Board Member Clarence Jordan said this month of awareness helps starts
conversations about mental illness within diverse communities:
Stigma affects everyone, but stigma has a greater impact in communities of color.
This is why July is so important. This month is celebrated to not only bring awareness, but to provide an
opportunity for everyone to be a part of the movement for mental health.

What is Bladder Cancer?
The most common form of bladder cancer is transitional cell
(urothelial) carcinoma. Many forms of malignancy may occur
in the epithelial lining of the urinary bladder which in turn may
spread through the lining into the muscular wall of the
bladder. Bladder cancers most often are defined by how far they
have traveled into the wall of the bladder.
Non-invasive bladder cancers remain in the inner layer of
cells and have not grown into deep deposits in the wall of the
bladder. Most non-invasive bladder cancers are detected early
and surgery can almost always remove these tumors.
Invasive cancers grow into the wall of the bladder making it
easier for the cancer to spread to the lymph nodes, other organs
of the body such as the kidneys, liver and lungs. Treatment will
be determined by your physician based upon how much the
cancer has spread. Once treated for bladder cancer it is not
uncommon for the disease to return and your physician may
recommend having chemotherapy or
immunotherapy to lower the risk of return.
Symptoms of bladder cancer
Blood or redness in the urine
Pain during urination
Frequent urination
Difficulty urinating
If you are experiencing any of these symptoms its important to
see your doctor. Diagnosis of bladder cancer will include a
urine culture (searches for bacteria in the urine) and urinalysis
(searches for existence of blood) and or check for tumor makers
as well as a urine cytology test which will check for abnormal
cells.

1. Pick one (or more) event or activity to do with a child (in addition to your own children; a child you know, and
whose parents know you) -- that will make some kind of positive difference or impact on that child. A list with 100+
ideas for home, work, your place of worship, & in the community to make a positive difference to children can be
found at: 100+ Ways to Make a Difference to Children.
2. Support an organization that serves children ...It could be your local community education dept or public schools,
YMCA, Boy or Girl Scouts, place of worship, park and recreation or any other organization that serves kids. Your
support might be as a volunteer, or a financial donation. They're all non-profits, and in today's economy they need your
support!
3. Tell your policy makers to support initiatives that are good for kids ... like your school board, city council, county
commissioners, state legislators & congressional delegation; summer is generally a more relaxed time to communicate
with them. Share your own story about Making a Difference to Children ... and WHY it's important to support programs
for children ...
4. Tell other people about this campaign ...like your neighbors, relatives, friends, people at work, worship, school or
play - Print out this one page flyer and post ...

Since 1985, America has celebrated July as the nations official Park and Recreation
Month. This year we are focusing on setting trends instead of following them, making 2014
the year people go outside, change their outlook, and get involved in their community through

July has been officially recognized as Eye Injury
Prevention Month. For this reason, a focus is placed
on protecting your eyes in various environments,
namely the workplace.
Eye injuries of all types occur at a rate of more than
2,000 per day. In particular, an estimated 1,000 eye
injuries occur in American workplaces alone. The
Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) found that almost
70% of the eye injuries studied occur from falling or
flying objects, or sparks striking the eye.
The best ways to prevent injury to the eye is to always
wear the appropriate eye protection. Surprisingly, the
BLS reports that approximately three out of every five
workers injured were either not wearing eye protection
at the time of the accident or wearing the wrong kind
of eye protection for the job. To be effective, eyewear
must fit properly and be designed to effectively protect
workers while they work. It is estimated that over 90%
of eye injuries are preventable with the use of proper
safety eyewear. The Occupational Safety Health
Administration, OSHA, has standards that require
employers to provide their workers with the
appropriate eye protection.
In addition to the proper safety eyewear, early
detection and treatment of eye conditions and
diseases are essential to maintaining good vision at
every stage of life. According to the American
Academy of Ophthalmology, AAO, children with a
family history of childhood vision problems should be
screened for common childhood eye problems before
the age of 5. Although most young adults have
healthy vision, if eye problems such as visual
changes, pain, flashes of light, seeing spots,
excessive tearing, and excessive dryness occur, they
should see an eye doctor. Adults between the ages of
40 to 65 should have an eye exam every two to four
years. Adults over the age of 65 should have an eye
exam at least every one to two years. Ultimately, the
key to preventing eye injuries is to take a more
proactive approach to sustaining healthy vision.
