Company Profile
"North Side Grocery was started in 1934 by Hendrik Meijer in Greenville along wi
th his son Fred as a grocery store to combat the food scarcity problem during th
e Great Depression. Meijer soon renamed his store to Meijer's Grocery. Hendrik b
egan to expand his business using newspaper advertisements and metal shopping ca
rts. The following year, he also put up a display featuring hand held baskets al
ong with an invitation to the customers asking them to help themselves with what
ever they wanted. This strategy worked and Meijer was able to double his store c
ount. As the stores began to attract more customers, a contest was organized to
choose a name for the new logo adopted by Meijer's Inc. The name Thrifty was sel
ected from the responses given. For a brief period ranging from 1956 to 1961 Mei
jers was involved in stamp trading. After this business was dropped, the company
opened its first Thrifty Acres store in 1962. Thrifty Acres operated as a disco
unt department store that offered food and general merchandise and moved on to o
perating as large supercenters. During the 1970s, the company introduced its che
ckout scanners. In the following decade, it began round the clock operations of
its stores. In 1990s, Meijer, Inc. made its presence online.
Currently, the company operates 200 stores across five states. Its stores provid
