MEDITATION
Awakening
Meditation is a spontaneous something, meditation is not an effort,
remember it. It should be spontaneous, natural. How this meditation can be spontaneous,
natural?
When we do not feel well, or comfortable, or happy, in our mental, emotional or
physical levels, we say we are suffering. Due to our small understanding of life, we use many
negative words because this is our way to express what we call sufferings. But they are not
actually sufferings, there is nothing like a bad thing is happening. This is the natures way to
awaken us.
God is everywhere
We are sleeping in all three levels, mental, emotional and physical; we are living with
a mental inertia, physical inertia, and emotional inertia. There is a universal Truth, that
Divine, God, lives everywhere, He lives outside, inside, all is God. The Divine, God, lives
everywhere, but can we see God everywhere, can we listen to him everywhere, can we feel
him everywhere? God is everywhere, outside, inside, but I cannot see Him, I cannot listen to
Him, I cannot feel Him, and I cannot understand Him. Is that true then? God is everywhere but
I cannot see Him. Where is he? If I cannot see God, if I cannot listen to God, if I cannot feel
Him everywhere, then one thing is clear, I am blind, I am deaf, I am dumb. God is everywhere
and I cannot see Him, then there is no doubt on my blindness.
Nature
Nature is very kind, the process is very beautiful. To break our blindness, to take over
this dumbness, to break our deafness, nature makes many, many efforts, so we can recover our
eyesight, recover our listening capacities, our feeling capacities. And to accomplish this, how
does nature work? Through pains, through sufferings and all kind of things which we do not
like. What do we not like in our life? Nobody likes unhappiness, sadness, frustration,
depression, sickness and all these sort of things. But these are not bad things, they are very
SWAMI BRAHMDEV

important parts of the process which is trying to give us the power to bring those capacities
back, with which we can see the Divine everywhere, hear him, feel him, realize him, live with
him.
Blindness on tree levels
So what happens? We are speaking about meditation. All this is connected with
meditation. Meditation is something that happens spontaneously in life, and on mental level,
physical level and emotional level. We have blindness on these three levels, mental, emotional
and physical. To break this blindness on these three levels, how does nature work? Through
hunger. Hunger is a very spontaneous process.
Hunger
On physical level, when you are very hungry, how do you feel? When you are very
hungry, then you can have the experience of suffering. On emotional level when you are very
hungry you also suffer, on mental level we can feel hunger too. On these three levels we can
feel hunger. Hunger is spontaneous, natural, but who helps to grow hunger? Who in you is
creating hunger on mental, emotional and physical levels? It is the force of suffering. This force
of suffering has the function to awaken hunger in you.
When you feel very, very hungry you start suffering and with this suffering, hunger
awakens more and more, it is something natural. And when body feels very hungry, which is
your situation? When your body feels very hungry, how do your mind and your emotions work?
What does your mind think, what comes to your mind, what does your mind remember? Food.
Do you have to make any effort to remember food? You do not have to make any effort to
remember food, it is natural, spontaneous, you cannot remember anything else, you cannot
think of anything else, you cannot concentrate in anything else; your whole concentration is in
food.

Spontaneous and natural
SWAMI BRAHMDEV

And when only food is in your memory, what do you search? Food. It is now that the
search starts, naturally, spontaneously. And when your search starts, your eyes, your senses,
are looking for food, where is the food. They are not going in any other direction; they are not
looking for anything else. They are only giving you information about food, moving for food.
The whole system, spontaneously and naturally, enters into the search, enters into the
discovery of food.
Look now, when your whole being is looking for food and searching for food, that is
meditation. It is spontaneous, natural. You are not making any effort to remember food; your
heart is full of food. Meditation is when your whole being is, spontaneously, naturally,
searching for what you are missing.
Physical level
On physical level, what do we miss? Food, and then on physical level meditation starts.
And when this physical meditation grows very strong, when this search becomes very strong,
what happens? You discover food, you find where food is, and you reach that place where food
exists, be in the restaurant or in the kitchen, wherever it is. And as soon as you discover food,
food goes inside and when food goes inside, what happens? When food goes inside, all the
hunger and all the suffering go out, food is inside and suffering is outside. This is a process of
meditation on physical level. When food is inside, then you have no suffering on your physical
level, there is nothing missing in your physical level, it only demands physical food.
Mind level
The same process happens on the mental level. Sometimes our physical body is full of
food, body is not feeling hungry, but mind is hungry. Body is full but mind is suffering. And
when mind is suffering, then again suffering comes in the form of pain and pressure.
When I use the word suffering, it means a strong pressure, which we have not
experienced before. Some sort of pressure gets born in our mind, and it is so strange to us, we
have no previous experience of it, no knowledge of this pressure and then we start expressing
SWAMI BRAHMDEV

-5-

this pressure with our negative attitude in the form of suffering. And when this pressure grows
more and more, mind begins to feel more and more hungry.
To satisfy minds hunger, there is mental food. Mind is not satisfied with physical food.
Mind food is calculations, measurements, ideas, ambitions, many egoistic ambitions,
judgments, plannings, designings, organizing. And when mind feels hungry, the mental level
search for mental food starts. When mind is hungry, then, same as body, it only remembers
and thinks of food. Then mind is only searching for measurements, calculations. It will never
be in peace until it discovers what mind wants, what mind likes. On mental level, mental
meditation starts.
Emotional level
In a similar way it happens on our emotional level. Emotional is also called the vital
level. We are made of five different pieces that together form this box of life. The physical
being, mental being, emotional or vital being, but there is a fourth part, the psychic being and
the fifth is the spiritual being, the soul. These five pieces together become our life.
On emotional level we also feel very hungry, on emotional level we also suffer very
much. When on emotional level suffering starts, then emotional hunger starts, and to satisfy
emotional hunger, we enter into the search of emotional food, like relationships, many things.
Then spontaneously, naturally, you discover your food. Your emotions become satisfied and
that is our normal way of living, our life-style.
The three parts
It is very rarely that we feel satisfied on mental, vital and physical levels. Sometimes
body is not hungry but mind is hungry. Sometimes body is hungry but vital is not.
These three parts are always playing with each other, they are interdependent on each
other, and they are very friendly with each other. And these three parts, they use our life. I
think that I am living but I am not living. It is my body, mind and vital that are playing the
SWAMI BRAHMDEV

game. Mental hunger, vital hunger and physical hunger, we all have good experience of what
these three hungers are.
When the three parts are satisfied
Sometimes my mind is full, my body is also full, and my emotions have all they need.
On mental level, on physical level and on emotional level, I have everything I need, whatever
is needed. I am not lacking anything, but still I am feeling hungry. It happens with you many
times, when mind, body and emotions have all they want, but still you are feeling hungry, still
you are missing something, still you are lacking something, still you are not feeling complete,
still you are feeling half, still you are feeling hungry. Who is the one that is hungry?
You have all that your mind, body and emotions need, but you still feel that something
is missing. Did you have this experience? You have whatever is needed in those three levels, on
these worldly levels, but you are not satisfied. Who is the one who feels hungry? Who is still
missing something? It is your spirit, your soul that is still hungry.
Your Soul
Sometimes our soul feels hungry. When soul feels hungry, then also some sort of pain,
some sort of suffering, awaken inside. And when the soul feels hungry, which is the food of the
soul? And where is the food of the soul? What does soul like? Body likes food, mental likes
calculations, and emotions like relationships. And what is the food of the soul? God is the food
of the soul.
When body feels hungry, then your mind and your emotions only remember food, look
for food. And when your soul is hungry, then you will only remember God.
You will not make any effort to remember God; it will be spontaneous, natural. God
will be on your mind, body and emotions. Only God, only the search for the Divinity. That will
be your purpose, your aim, your goal, your target, your action, your reaction, your ambition,
your dream. Only God, naturally.

The day your soul will feel hungry, then meditation will awaken in you, meditation will
be born in you. The flower of meditation, the fruit of meditation will spontaneously blossom.
Meditation is not an effort, meditation is not an activity, it is a spontaneous and natural
process of life. But to realize it, to awaken this meditation, hunger is needed, souls hunger.
The Role of God in your life
We are always trying to remember God, we try to remember God. But do you have to
try to remember the one you love? Spontaneously and naturally he is always in your mind, in
your emotions.
But to remember God, we go to church, we go to the temple, we do meditation, and
we do many things to remember. Therefore one thing is clear, we do not love God. If we loved
God, we could not forget him. The one we love is always in our whole being.
We never love God, we only remember him when we suffer. When suffering comes, we
try to make an effort. Why do we not love God? Which is the place of God in our life? Which is
the position, which is the role of God in our life? He is the source of this life. Because of God
we are here. We exist because of that Divinity we have inside. Because of Divine we have
existence, if no Divine no existence.
Then which is the most important part of our life? We do not love this part, we ignore
that part, and when we ignore that, to whom are we giving much importance in our life? We
are giving importance to that which is not really me, my mind, my body, my emotions, and to
that which is really me, the Divine part, we ignore it.
How are we living?
This is the reason why we are not able to make a beautiful place of this earth, this
world, this playground,. The highest reality in life is the Divine. And we think that it is not
ours, we think that it is something foreign to us. And to those who are really strangers in our
life, as mind, body and emotions, to them we give great importance. This is the cause of life in
this world being only mental, physical end emotional.

This life we are living is just a battlefield of impulses of the senses and impulses of
mental, physical and emotional levels. Why are we living like this? Why are we not able to
understand something so small and simple?
Because of the Divine we have this opportunity of living, but we forget this God, this
Divinity. Why are we living a life without Divine, without God? Where is the fault? What
happens to us? We are asleep. Who gave us these sleeping pills? Who gave us this dose that
made us blind? Ignorance did.
Can meditation break ignorance?
We all do have a great dose of ignorance. We have locked ourselves in ignorance.
Ignorance has locked us in its house and that is why we are blind and not able to understand. Is
there a way to break this ignorance? What is that which can break the ignorance so we can
recover our true position? That is meditation, any meditation, on mental, physical or emotional
level, whatever level where you feel hungry.
But this is an extremely slow process and life is not so long. You have to choose
whether you want to realize yourself, to get out from a life of ignorance. We are the only
conscious beings on this earth, with the extraordinary possibility of living with consciousness,
to live with awareness, to live with understanding, to live awakened.
Since we have consciousness, awareness and understanding, we must learn how to use
all these facilities because by using them we can break our ignorance.
Awaken your soul
Meditation is a spontaneous something, but I cannot wait till this process starts
spontaneously and naturally. As in this system of life, everything is possible, we can discover
and awaken our souls hunger through different life-styles. Since I am living in a very mental,
very physical and very emotional world, I am always running due to hunger in those three
levels.

Who in these three levels, physical, mental and emotional, is helping me to be hungry
and to discover food? Who is helping me? The force of desires.
Sometimes it happens that you are hungry but have no desire to eat. Imagine that you
are very hungry but have no desire to eat, this happens sometimes. Practice it. Today, when
you feel very hungry, on any level, on emotional level, on mental level, on physical level, try
this time to have no desire to satisfy this hunger.
If we want hunger to be awakened in us, in our soul, in our psychic, then we should
not fulfil our mental, physical and emotional desires. We are constantly satisfying mental
demands, physical demands and emotional demands. They demand through desires: give me
this, give me that. Whole life I am fulfilling my mental, physical and emotional desires, and
my soul never awakens.
If you want your soul and your psychic get awaken then you have to try this practice.
Nothing is going to happen if you do not satisfy your mental, physical and emotional desires.
When you are hungry and do not feel the desire for food, then something in you will blossom.
Something inside yourself, in your soul, will awaken and will start to open.
Control your desires
Try to understand this: it is the force of desires which is making us blind. Who is
making us blind? Why are we deaf, dumb and blind? What is making us like that? Desires, the
force of desires. And what do desires mean? Ignorance. And what is the meaning of ignorance?
That we do not know ourselves and this ignorance allows the force of desires to play their
game, to use this life.
Now if we want to realize who we are, we have to stop this force of desires. The
beautiful thing in our lives is that there are so many natures, qualities, potentials, powerful
sources inside. And one of the most important is that we are conscious beings, and if we use
this our small conscience we can make a wonderful experiment, play a wonderful game, we
can live a very beautiful life.
SWAMI BRAHMDEV

With consciousness we can control desires. When a desire comes, with consciousness
you can say no, just no. When you say yes, it comes inside and it uses you. Say no, once, twice,
one hundred times no, no, no. It is very simple; it is the function, the purpose of consciousness
in our lives. With consciousness we can watch, choose and refuse. But now the thing is that
when the game is just yes or no, you are able to say no only when you do not want it, do not
feel attracted or you do not like it; but you are not able to say no when you feel attraction,
you like something, you are charmed by it.
That you have to see, with your small conscience awareness, what is the most
attractive, interesting and charming for you in your life.
Five minutes Meditation
Then let us meditate now for five minutes on our life and just observe and discover
which is the most interesting attraction in me, what is the most beautiful, the most valuable in
my life. Just for five minutes, meditate and discover in you, where is the value of your life.
Feel in yourselves what is that which is the most valuable, which is making this life valuable,
with which this life has value. Can you do this? Just try for five minutes to see in you, to
discover in you, to feel in you that which is the highest attraction, that which is making this
life valuable. Meditate on this, discover this. After all this talk, with what you heard, try to do
it. (Five minutes of silence).
Attraction is inside you
You know that in our normal life, in our worldly outer life, there are so many
attractions, and all these attractions force us to move. If there were not outer attractions, you
would not feel the need to move. Something in us wants that something should be there which
attracts us to force us to move, these attractions force you to move.
In a similar way as in the outer world some attractions are helping you to move there,
you must discover some attraction in your inner world, inside yourself, in your life. Which
attraction is inside you? This is the idea. If you discover an attraction inside you, this attraction
will force you to move too.
SWAMI BRAHMDEV

www.swamitalks.com
-11-

Outer attractions force you to move to the outside, inner attractions force you to
move to the inside and you will be with yourself. Then which is the highest attraction in you?
Are you able to discover it? But we are ignoring this part and we are giving all our lives to the
outer part, which is a very limited part, and can only give us limitedness. This is why we can
never feel complete, whole. We have to discover this unlimited part which can make us feel
whole and full.
Life is an attraction
I have to discover something, an attraction in life that is what I call me, myself.
Which is that attraction in our life? God is an attraction, a great attraction, if I can discover it,
if it is true and I can discover it, it is the highest inside me. If God is the attraction, it should
be an attraction in your whole being. But the first attraction is this life. Life is an attraction.
Life should be an attraction. First attraction should be your life, and not things.
In the outer life, things are the attraction. Things are the attraction, pictures are an
attraction. In the inside life, life itself is one of the greatest attractions. How do you give
importance to life? When you give importance to life, then God and all the rest come
automatically. The important thing is this opportunity which nature has given to our soul in this
box, in this life. Then life is the attraction.
What is life?
But what is life? Life should be the attraction, but I should know what life is. What is
that I call life? Whom am I calling my life? First thing is that life should be my attraction to
live, but if I have no attraction for life, then I am attracted by material things. And material
things can only satisfy my needs, they are just a pastime, it is a life with ignorance.
But what is life? What is the age of my life in this box? When you say your age is
twenty-five, this is not your age, that is past, twenty-five means past, gone. Life is just one
breathing, that which in this moment is inside me that is my life. Life is just a breathing, the
one I have inside just now. No one knows whether next breathing will come, it is not certain.
And when we exhale, that breath is over, it is past, and it is history.
SWAMI BRAHMDEV

www.swamitalks.com
-12-

Life is now and here, in the present, what I am breathing. If I have to live, then where
do I have to live? In my life. And my life is just one breathing, then I have to live in this, my
only breathing.
Live in the Present
Because of ignorance, we are always absent from our lives, we never live in this
breathing. When we are absent from our lives, where are we when we are absent? In the past
or in the future. Past means death, future means that which does not yet exist. Then where do
we live? We do not live. And where do this past and this future live? In the mind, they are only
living in the mind.
Animals do not live in the past or in the future, they live in the present. Why are we
not able to enjoy the highest and best possibilities of life? Because we are always absent of our
lives. If I learn to be in the present, with whole presence, life will always be with flowers, with
joy, with bliss and with everything, we will not miss anything. And that will be possible when
you have a central attraction.
Then make an attraction central in your life, and that attraction is life. When you live
in the breath in the present, you are with your highest conscience, not with your mind and
emotions anymore. When you are in the present, you are in a high level, with full conscience,
then you can see better, can listen better, can feel better. This blindness we have, this
dumbness, that do not let us see, do not let us hear, that is because we are not living life, we
are always absent. If you live here, with your full presence, then you will always see God.
But you have to practice it; you have to make it a life-style. Live with this clarity,
with this knowledge, and life will always be with you with all the highest possibilities.
Meditate in your breathing
Meditate in your breathing, now. Meditate in your breathing. How can you meditate in
your breathing? To meditate in your breathing, the first step to start is to begin counting your
breathings. Whenever you have time, sit down and count your breathings. Thirty, forty, one
SWAMI BRAHMDEV

www.swamitalks.com
-13-

hundred, just count them. Slowly, slowly, something will start to change in you and you will
begin to exist in your breathing. You will begin to feel that you are present in yourself; you will
start to feel your presence. It is the first step, just count ten breathings.
Do not make any effort, breathing is spontaneous. Just count, this way mind will be
busy, take the air with your natural rhythm. Just be with it and when you are counting, you
can feel it. This can be a meditation. With this technique we can awaken our souls.
Force of Silence
If life is just one breathing, where does this life live? Life lives in silence. Silence is the
birthplace of life. All nature, if you look at it, is living in silence, without making any effort.
Nature does not efforts. If we want to enjoy life, to realize it, then silence can help.
Silence is the birthplace of my soul. In this life I have to find my soul, and to find my
soul, who can help me? Silence. Silence can take you there. Silence is a path. The force of
silence alone is enough to make you realize your true nature, your truth.
But this silence should be a conscious silent, spontaneous silence, natural silence, not
artificial, not unnatural. When we do not allow mind, body and emotions to interfere in our
lives, we can live with a spontaneous, natural and conscious silence. And once there will be a
conscious silence, under the influence of this silence, mind, body and emotions will also
become silent, will also become quiet. You have to teach them, educate them, with the force
of silence.
Practice Silence
Now we are going to take a short break, and during this break, without making any
effort, try to exist in silence. Do whatever you have to do but in silence. Try to establish
your relationship, your link, with this force of silence. Always try to feel that this silence
is with you. Silence is always there, you have to open so silence can stay with you.
