Delhi Jal Board under Government of NCT has awarded M/s Chinar Shipping the contract for dredging 7,77,000 Cubic meter of silt and sand at their water intake channel located at Wazirabad so that water shortage problem can be resolved during summers. We were given Wazirabad water intake area which caters water need of 30% Delhis population. The dredging has been successfully completed before the start of the flood season. The work is extended for another one season to maintain the required depth for the water intakes. Chinar has completed 2 years of successful dredging operations at different captive ports and jetties for Maharashtra Maritime Board, Mumbai.
The three WTPs located at Wazirabad, Chandrawal and Okhla are supplied with raw water from Wazirabad intakes. During closure of Moradnagar Conduit, raw water is also lifted for Bhagirathi and Sonia Vihar Water Treatment Plant. As a natural phenomenon, silt travels along with water especially during monsoon, resulting in reduction of depth of water considerably in the pondage area. Over a period of time large quantity of silt/sand got deposited within pondage area, thereby reducing depth of water by over a meter. No dredging has been done since last six years. Deposited silt needs to be removed be mechanical means to retrieve the holding capacity of the pondage. Pondage acts as the buffer against the variation and release of water by Haryana in non- monsoon period and also it takes care of the requirement for few days in emergency condition.
