On April 16th Sally Clelland came to teach us
how to make paper boxes and decorate the
cards. We enjoyed making them as it was
relaxing and something new. We all had good
fun and the time went by quickly. We still found
time to have cup of tea and chat. Thanks to
Sally for coming and being patient with us.

On May 18th we had great fun playing the game
Give us a clue. Phil Knight organised this game
and he did well and was patient with us. Some
people found it hard to draw and we had to guess what was it. It was not easy as
some of us were not good at drawing or guessing! We had to have a break halfway as
it was exhausting. The mens team got more points than the womens team. They
must have watched too much TV!
We will have other games in winter.

June 15th we played dominos and David Cook taught us a new game called windmill
and it was different from the normal dominos game. It was a nice surprise to see
Duncan Harper and we had a nice chat with him. He designed the mosaic picture of
2000 which is on the wall in hall at CDA. Of course we had time for tea and cake and
talk.

No deaf club during August but we meet again on September 21st.

13th April 2013
We played a game called Guess things in the socks. There were 26 socks and I put
things in them and everyone was not allowed to look in the socks, but got to feel
them and try to guess what it was in the socks. We had 3 winners and they received
free drinks and a snack.

we had cheese and

BSL Walks
Big thanks to Ron Allen for organising
the BSL Walk on Sunday 7th April.
Twelve people met outside the Anchor
Pub in Burwell at 10.30am but there
was a delay of about 40 minutes as we
had to wait for two more people. The
walk was supposed to be about 3 miles
and Ron Allen led the way. It was a
different walk, different route from last
time we were there (last year) but we
now all think we must have walked for a
good 5 or even 6 miles! The weather
was good and sunny.

CDA NEWS
BSL Walks (Cont)
Half of our group stopped half way in a pub for a toilet and lunch break and the other
half continued to walk until they returned to the Anchor Pub for their lunch etc. Elaine
Heath had to go back early as her dog was exhausted and Joan Hartley went with her
for company. The dog appeared to be knocked out in the pub but she was fine.

Our second BSL walk took place in Manea at the RSPB nature reserve car park and
there were toilet facilities. Elaine Heath spent lot of her time preparing and
organising for this walk but, sadly only five people turned up! The weather was fair
and overcast, sometimes windy. Instead of the planned 4 miles walk, we walked
alongside both sides of the river, spent some time in one of the hides where we had
our packed lunch as you can see on the photo.
The RSPB nature reserve itself is interesting with a visitors centre although only one
picnic table, at the other side of the river are several hides for birdwatching, it is
possible to borrow a pair of binoculars from the visitor's centre. Unfortunately, the
'Ship Inn' pub about a mile from the nature reserve is now permanently closed.

Chairpersons Report
Welcome to the Summer newsletter. We have had to say some goodbyes at CDA, the
first was to Sally Skeldon who is now going to be working as an interpreter. I am
pleased to say we are delighted to welcome back Ruth Godden as a support worker to
CDA. She is due to start in August. The AGM is going to be on the 2nd of September
this year and it will be your chance to come and meet the staff at CDA and to find out
what is available and what is going on in the future as well as what has gone on in
the last year. We do hope that you will come. The second goodbye was to the Rev.
Charles Dixon. Many of you would have met him as the Deaf Chaplain in the area and
then he was a volunteer helping at some services in the area and now he has
completely retired. I have had a meeting with the Bishop of Huntingdon and I am
happy to say that we hope that there will continue to be events happening all over
the county as well as in the Peterborough area as there is a Deaf Chaplain in that
area called Andrew. The Bishop was keen that the Deaf community is invited back to
a service in the cathedral in 2013-14 so we will organise that as the one marking the
900 years of the Ely Diocese was very special. Jan Smith who many of you know, is
looking for everyones ideas so let her know what you would like to see happening in
the area. There has been so much going on that has been fun like the BSL walks and
the Go Kart racing as well as the church services and drop ins and social groups that I
hope there is something at CDA for everyone. I hope to see you all at the AGM.

CDA NEWS
Go Kart
CDA Go Karting event took place on Sunday 19th May 11am at KartSport in Caxton,
Cambs, 9 people put their names down.
We didn't manage to achieve the 20 people we needed for the Team event, but we
went ahead having an individual race instead.
We were racing for 30 minutes at a very slightly reduced rate of 36 on the longer
outdoor track and the weather was kind to us.
After paying we then collected our helmets/gloves and overalls. It was fun choosing
suitable overalls as there were all sorts of different sizes and colours. That was hard
work! Then the organisers gave a safety briefing for which there was a BSL
interpreter for. I have never see Paul Langford getting so excited!
There was then a 5 minute qualifying session to determine the grid for the race, this
was followed by a Race briefing about the do's and don'ts of racing.
I was the clear favourite to finish last by my fellow drivers (Thanks!!) We had a great
race and much to my joy, I did not come last or not even second last! It was not
really clear enough for us to know who had actually won the race due to some mixed
up on scoring by the official/organiser. Never mind but everyone thoroughly enjoyed
it and it is worth every penny of 36. We will make this an annual event and we hope
a lot more people will take part next year. Start saving some money now!
There was a prize giving ceremony along with a bottle of bubbly as show in the photo
below.

Finally a big thank you to David Fairey for organising this brilliant event and also to
Paula Fye for interpreting.

everyone. She also showed us how to protect ourselves
from cowboys and rogue trader people.

The people who took part in the Wolverhampton

In June, there will be a clip of Deafest for those who missed it in May, this will
include all the awards.

About 5pm, the 1st group went to sign view Oxford Street, M & M World, Leicester

Peterborough at 12 midnight feeling tired and after a very good day.
The 2nd and 3rd groups together went to Leicester Square, took some pictures
and walked around China Town then everyone went to a choice Buffet dinner
there, afterwards walked to M & M World on the way back to King Cross, and
catched the 9. 23 train, arrived Peterborough at 10.30pm. They had a great time
with lots of good memories.
Here are some comments from Deaf people
Samiya: I enjoy it lucky the weather was good. But there was not enough food
shop I think. Went to McDonalds instead to get food.
Suzanne : I enjoyed seeing some of my friends at Remark! Disappointed few
stalls were there at Remarks. It was good sunny and warm weather. We left
Remark, early. We went to Leicester square for to walk around Chinatown. We
took some photographs in Chinatown. Then we had our supper at Chinese buffet.
We went to M & M sweet chocolates. We too few photographs and had a fun. We
went to underground to back kings Cross station. We catch the train to back
home. We had a fun day!
Anthony: I only know few friends, I enjoyed with Peterborough Deaf Drop-in
group. Only disappointments were few stalls, Toilet, and Refreshment. We went to
Chinatown for Chinese meal. It had been a good and fun Day.

Muslim Deaf UK
The time was delayed as the presenters, Solomon Riley,
Owais Murad and Mebarban Ahmed arrived late because
of the traffic.
Mohommad introduced Brother Owais, Brother
Mehatban and Brother Solomon to us. Brother Owaise
explained the MDUK history the meaning of Islam,
Quran and Hadith. Islam is the word from Arabic PEACE.
The story of Muslim was told from begin to end.
Brother Mebarban asked us some questions to make
sure we had
understood and
were aware of what
Brother Solomon
had said. Any
questions the deaf
community had to
ask, they responded if they were confused in
the past.
Food was provided for us at 4.30 pm, it was
delicious and we chatted with the warm
environment until 5.30pm.

Peterborough Coffee Morning
I love working at the Deaf Coffee Morning! There is a lovely atmosphere and Im
sure everyone agrees. One and a half hours is not long enough! The staff at
Ricos are pleased to have us and have become very deaf aware. We have an
average of about 20 people coming to the Coffee Morning, we dont see the same
faces every time. We had a good attendance on the Bank Holiday Mondays
(Easter and Whitsun). A quiz is organised at most sessions, Ive been running
out of ideas for a quiz but everyone at the coffee morning have come up with
some! The person/group who wins the quiz receives a stamp on their free drink
card. For those of you who do not know, if you attend the coffee morning you will
receive a free drinks card which I will stamp if you buy a drink at Ricos. You will
get a stamp each time you come to the Coffee Morning but you must buy a drink
to get one. When you have four stamps on your card, CDA will buy you a free
drink.
A Latvian lady, with help from her boyfriend, gave us a talk about Latvian culture

Computer Training
Brendan Casey is now available again as a volunteer to help deaf
people with Computer training and he is able to communicate on
a One to One basis using BSL. We have been very lucky to have
Brendan as it is very difficult to find someone who has his skills in
using computers as well as being able to use a variety of different
communication methods to meet a wide range of communication
needs! iPads are one of the things he can help you with and help

The visit of Jean Ellis from Austria
On June 12th, a group of people, mostly deaf, came to Whittlesey Baptist Church
to learn about the missionary work of Jean Ellis who is hearing. Jean 'talked' in
sign language to us about her work among the deaf in
Klagenfurt, Austria. She has been involved in the work there
for over 15 years.
Jean showed us some lovely photographs of Salzburg and
Klangenfurt, where she is based. Jean explained how she
became involved with deaf people helping them by translating
from the German written Bible into Austrian deaf sign
language.
Next year, Jean may retire from her work and at the moment
she is stepping back slowly and letting three deaf Austrian
men become more independent and for them to be more
responsible to preach to the deaf.
After Jean finished her 'talk', it was time for a cuppa, and
many questions to ask Jean!
