The Program
Building on the success of its highly successful Summer College Program,
Syracuse University has partnered with the New York City Department of
Education to offer Summer College in the City, an exciting educational
experience for high school juniors.
Summer College in the City offers college-level courses to well-qualified high
school juniors in New York City. It encourages talented students to consider
careers in the professions, including education. This program serves as a part-
nership model for private, selective, research-oriented universities joining with
urban school systems to improve education for all students.
Participation
Juniors from qualified schools within the NYC Department of Education are
encouraged to apply to the program. Applicants will be selected through a
competitive process. The program is free of charge to successful applicants.
To qualify, students must be completing their junior year with a minimum
cumulative grade point average of 85. Applicants must submit two letters of
recommendation from their teacher or high school administrators and an
essay explaining why they should be selected for the program. Candidates will
be interviewed by officials from Syracuse University and the New York City
Department of Education.
Summer College in the City runs from June 30 to August 8, 2008 (six
weeks). Classes will be scheduled four days a week, Monday through
Thursday. Fridays are reserved for faculty-supervised visits to New York City
businesses, organizations, and museums, that complement the curriculum.
Daily sessions are scheduled from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Classes will be held at the NYC Department of Education’s High School for
Leadership and Public Service, 90 Trinity Place, Manhattan, in the Wall
Street area.
