Melt Processing Stability
Long Term Thermal Stability
Stabilizers are used at various stages in a polymer life-cycle. They are primarily used for controlling
reaction rates or avoiding early polymerisation in the actual polymer formation. Stabilizers then
play an imminent role in all melt processing steps of polymer resins where temperatures well
above 150 C are reached, though for limited periods of time. Ultimately, stabilizers will maintain
of mechanical and aesthetic properties of plastic items by enhancing their long term thermal
stability.

UV protection of plastics Global solar irradiance
This map depicts the global variation of average irradiation energy reaching the earths surface.
UV irradiation energy is responsible for light induced deterioration of plastics and other materials.
Therefore, light stabilizer formulations must consider the global location where the nal article
is used and its expected service life.

Processing Team at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center.
