ATTITUDES AND LEVEL OF ACCEPTANCE OF COACHES IN VARSITY
SPORTS TOWARD LESBIANS AND GAY MEN IN CAVITE STATE
UNIVERSITY Regine D. Uson INTRODUCTION The atmosphere of college athletics has been depicted as hostile, unwelcoming, and homophobic toward lesbians and gay men. According to Jacobson (2002), within the domain of the university, the athletic department has been described as the most homophobic place on campus! (p. A""). #ittle research has investigated the attitudes of coaches toward lesbians and gay men ($oper % &alloran, 200'). (o published literature has been found, which investigates attitude di)erences of varsity coaches toward lesbians and gay men participating in collegiate sports. *verall, the current study is essential for three reasons. +irst, lesbians and gay men are members of an at,ris- group that endures tremendous pre.udices based on se/ual orientation. The pre.udice and discrimination that lesbians and gay men face vary, and some forms of discrimination are even legal. 0econd, little research has focused on attitudes and acceptance toward lesbians and gay men in the conte/t of sport. 1ore speci2cally, the body of literature regarding the attitudes of coaches in collegiate sports toward lesbians and gay men is scarce. 3t has been suggested that, within the conte/t of sport, negative attitudes toward lesbians and gay men are openly e/pressed (4olf,4endel, Toma, % 1orphew, 2005) and these attitudes are believed to be widespread and accepted.
