Course Overview
There are 5 over-arching domains in which students gain 7
th
Grade Level Math proficiency and
mastery for problem-solving and critical-thinking. The goals by domain are:

1. Extend the Number Sense - develop Rational Number Operations Skills (Arithmetic with positive and negative
numbers Integers, Decimals, Fractions and Irrationals). This is the foundation for future success in Algebra
2. Develop Algebraic Reasoning Skills: Students progress from working backwards arithmetically to working
forward algebraically to find unknown quantities.
3. Develop Proportional Reasoning Skills in applications like Finance, Scale Drawings, Food Industry etc.
4. Develop Decision-making skills by analyzing data using statistical measures.
5. Develop Spatial-thinking and related measuring/computation skills (Geometry).
Course Material

Parents can request to check out Prentice Hall Pre-Algebra Textbook (M7Plus) and Holt Math7 (M7) Textbook
for their student to reference and practice problems although these are not the prescribed Common Core
Standard Textbooks (I usually create Common Core-aligned Unit Packets depending on the unit of study
and /or paper budget provided by School, otherwise Class Notes and CW/HW Worksheets are provided as
applicable).
An electronic textbook copy plus supplemental text can be accessed on our class website.
Check out other Math Links listed on our Math Class Website for extra practice problems and notes.
Checked out Textbooks are due to CCMMS by end of academic year after EOG, otherwise fine is levied and
EOG report card has to be personally collected from main office.

B: Math Class Participation and Behavior Management Plan
Rationale
o In the classroom, every student can be proactive about learning and boosting their grades by taking personal
responsibility for their work and by coming to class prepared with material.
o In the classroom, every student has a right to learn and no student has a right to disturb peers from learning or
prevent the teacher from teaching due to any disrespectful, disruptive or irresponsible behavior.

C: Daily- HW Assignments

To receive full credit, the HW assignment must be completed on time with work shown clearly. If the assignment is not
complete when due, the student will have until next school day or by grade recovery Friday period to turn in late,
completed work for partial credit otherwise it is a zero.
Be sure to give your best effort for completion as well as accuracy for solving Math assignment problems. This is YOUR
chance to be PROACTIVE to see how well you understand the material and practice BEFORE upcoming graded
assessments. If unclear about a problem, write down your questions/feedback next to it like what was confusing,
where did you get stuck, what did you try to persevere etc. to discuss during HW review/feedback the next day and to get
proper credit.

D: Tests/Quizzes/Projects

Tests will be at the end of Unit and will be announced 2-3 days in advance. Quizzes may or may not be announced
depending on the type of quiz.
Students are expected to show their steps of solution systematically including any models/diagrams, justification for the
steps (when applicable) for complete credit of an accurate answer. The procedure about how to show your work will be
further discussed in detail in class with examples.
Test Correction Opportunity is offered for all End-of-Unit Tests and some Quizzes only. It is a time-bound privilege and a
second-chance that students get to reflect on their mistakes, correct it and master a unit while improving grades (get
back half of the lost points). Sometimes, proof of study is required if there is a pattern of not proactively studying before.
The test correction procedure will be discussed in class

E: Make Up (after absence) Work

The student is responsible for securing and catching up on all missed work (including notes, CW, HW assignments
and Assessments (Tests/Quiz/Project)) upon return and unless otherwise instructed, students are NOT exempt from
missed work.

The student will receive full credit for completing missed CW-Notes-Practice, HW assignments, Assessments by the new
due date (1 day grace for each day absent) or/and by Grade Recovery Class Period the following Friday. It will be
marked zero after that and the student will receive partial credit, if turned in late by the next Grade Recovery Period day.
The procedure for securing and completing make-up work will be explained and rehearsed in class.

Section 2: Extra Guidance in Math starts with being Proactive!

1. Ask clarifying questions in class on current topic.
2. Ask a peer during morning Den time or Lunch time
3. Ask the teacher during morning Den time ( be prepared to share what all you did before to try to understand or solve
a problem and also show your completed notes and CW)
4. Go to Math Class Website for Video-Clips or other Math Website Links listed there.
5. Utilize time in your SMART Block (Weds/Thurs) and Grade Recovery Session (Friday) at school
6. Ask a family member, contact a study buddy or form a study group.

Section 3: Success in 7
th
Grade Math and beyond starts with being Proactive!

Many students find studying for math tests difficult because they have not had to study in previous years to maintain an
A/B math average. Simply looking over already completed problems is not studying for a math test!

Studying for Math means that in addition to completing HW each night, students should spend time reviewing notes and
reworking any classwork problems, as needed. Write down your clarifying questions and ask a peer/teacher next day in
class.

Starting 2-3 days before a Test/Quiz,
1) Review/rework previous formative assessments (classwork/homework/quizzes),
2) Review properties, formula and vocabulary and other notes make or use flashcards etc. if needed
3) Rework any sample problems (from scratch),
4) Complete additional problems for practice (Textbook, Unit Packets, Online Math Links)
5) Practice problems with a study buddy

Also, stay organized and use time wisely

Make sure to use Test Correction Opportunities which is both a privilege and a second chance you get to master a Unit
and improve your score

Maintain a positive attitude, believe in yourself, put in efforts, ask for guidance and persevere! You do not have to be
born with Math Smarts, but can absolutely develop Math Smarts by great study skills and more!! Parents and Students -
Check out Stanford Psychology Professor, Carol Dwecks research and videos on YouTube about the Growth Mindset
Vs. Fixed Mindset.

Section 4: Integrity Statement

"I affirm that I will uphold the highest principles of honesty and integrity in all my endeavors at Centennial Campus Magnet
Middle School and foster an atmosphere of mutual respect within and beyond the classroom".
