CEE 3310 Fluid Mechanics: Prelim 2 Fall 2013

Open book
Read each problem carefully before beginning to work on the answer.
Solve all problems using symbols and then substitute numerical values as a last step.
State all assumptions! Assume all fluids are at 20 C unless indicated otherwise
Show your work and DRAW A BOX AROUND YOUR FINAL ANSWERS.

1) (25 points) A reducing pipe bend that transitions a D
1
= 0.20 m pipe to a D
2
= 0.15 m
pipe is held in place by a pedestal as shown below. There are flexible couplings at the
connections to the straight pipe runs that transmit no force between the straight pipe
sections and the reducing pipe bend. The pressure at point 1 is P
1
= 562 kPa and the
pressure at point 2 is P
2
=325 kPa. The design flow rate through the pipe is Q = 0.400
m
3
/s. Find (i) the net force and (ii) the two components of the moment that must be
applied at the pedestal base (point 3) to hold the bend stationary. You may neglect the
weight of the fluid and pipe sections.

2) (25 points) Your friends design the fountain as shown below. Given the elevations
with respect to the ground of: z
1
= 15 m, z
2
= 40 m, z
3
= 10 m, z
4
= 5 m, a pipe
diameter of D = 0.065 m, and the knowledge that the headloss is h
L
= 0.1V
2
, (i)
determine what power the pump must deliver to achieve the desired flow? (ii) Sketch
the EGL and the HGL for the flow.

3) (25 points) An incompressible, viscous fluid is placed between two horizontal parallel
plates as shown below. The bottom plate is fixed but the top plate moves at a constant
speed V. The plates length, L, is very very long compared to the separation distance,
H. You may assume that the problem is two-dimensional that is there is no flow in
the lateral (y) direction.

(i) Determine the simplest form for the Navier-Stokes equations for this problem.
You may assume you are only interested in the solution in the central region of
the channel that is away from the ends.
(ii) Solve your equations for the velocity profile u(z) as a function of the relevant
parameters.

4) (25 points) You have been asked to conduct a laboratory test to determine the drag
force on a building. The planned building will have a height H = 30 m, a width B =
40 m and a depth D = 20 m. The design conditions is for winds perpendicular to the
side with the largest area at a wind speed of 40 m/s. You have your machine shop
build you a 1/100
th
scale model.

(i) Write down the minimum set of dimensional variables that the drag force, F
D
,
depends on.
(ii) Express your answer to part (i) in dimensionless form.
(iii) Can total similarity be achieved?
(iv) The maximum wind speed of your tunnel is 20 m/s do you think it is
reasonable to carry out the proposed test?
(v) You assume it is reasonable and measure a drag force on the model of 180 N
under a wind speed of 20 m/s. Assuming the air temperature would be the same,
find the drag on the full-scale (prototype) building.
